Richmond Weekend Trip Suggestions - Senor_Taylor - 01-23-2019

Hello all!

As you may know, I always wanted to move to Richmond after college, but that didn't pan out and I'm near DC now. My lady friend and I are going to do a weekend trip to Richmond so she can see what it's like. She's from Pittsburgh and wants to move back there in the future, but she knows I probably don't want to. This trip is for fun, but I'll definitely have my eyes open for if I ever want to move there.

She suggested this trip, so now I'm looking for some suggestions on fun things to do/check out while we're down there. She doesn't care about cars, so the race track/G Force aren't on the agenda. Perhaps some neighborhoods that would make sense for young professionals to live in that would allow me to have a garage could be good suggestions to drive through as well.

We'll probably come after March.

Thanks!

Don't you dare let anyone or anything, including vagina, convince you to move to Pittsburgh

The only thing worth moving to Pittsburgh for is so that you can later leave Pittsburgh.

Check out the fan for restaurants and stuff. Go to The Answer and bring me back some beer when you go.

Cabell and Ryan... the Gallamores... someone hurry up and chime in for details.

IMHO Pittsburgh and Richmond are pretty comparable. Pittsburgh is slightly more big city because of the sports teams there. Each have old school neighborhoods with different vibes... but still very similar and "nice."

Richmond has more new suburbs and newer homes in some of the down town areas. Pittsburgh has older homes with corner bars, markets, etc. down the street. Richmond still has to live with VA alcohol rules and has more chain stuff IMHO.

seriously? I love Pittsburgh. we used to go up there all the time. dive bars, mom and pop restaurants... there is soul in that city. I'm sure traffic sucks... I know the iphone GPS cant keep up with the construction there.

There isnt much more drab than a pittsburgh winter. Yinzer it up!

I could live in Richmond, though. Its a nice small town.

If you like beer, check out Scott's addition. Tons of little breweries and stuff. The barcade is there if you like old school video games or pinball too. Crazy amount of restaurants in the fan and a few in Scott's addition but I don't go into the city much so I'm not sure which ones are worth checking out. I think there's a new Billy Jack's that opened. Maybe near the bottom? Cabell or Ryan might know. There's not really much to see out by the gallamores or me.

If you like beer... veil, answer, triple crossing, hardywood are all really solid (in that order).

Can't repost this enough. The only redeeming quality for that cursed state is they don't require a front license plate.

Pittsburg is the fuckin' pits. Do not ever move to that shit hole. And this is coming from someone who lives 10 minutes south of Baltimore.

Agreed with suggestions above. Non-drinking related, Maymont is really cool to visit as well, along with Belle Isle/Botanical Gardens if you are into outdoors stuff. Science Museum is also pretty legit, surprisingly.

Carytown and Fan are the younger areas.

Downtown during the day is mostly business/commercial. At night you have bars and rooftop bars/clubs/whatever you fancy. Fan also has bars with younger peeps.

+1 on the whole don't move to Pittsburgh, it sucks there. Been a couple times and it's just... idk gloomy? Especially in the winter. Even moreso if you don't want to and would only do it for someone else. Be it man, woman or otherwise.

RE: Richmond Weekend Trip Suggestions - ScottyB - 01-23-2019

was born/lived in PA for 17 years. Pittsburgh is fun to visit. but you don't want to live there, or most places in west/north PA (aka Pennsyltucky) for that matter.

RE: Richmond Weekend Trip Suggestions - Senor_Taylor - 01-23-2019

I'm not moving to Pittsburgh or anywhere North of NOVA. That has already been discussed ad nauseum. I'm about compromise, but this long term is entirely dependent on her decision to stick around Virginia. We've already agreed to shake hands and say goodbye if she decides to move back there. I wouldn't consider moving FOR someone unless I was married.

Wasn't meaning it was discussed here. Meant I discussed it with her a lot. Wasn't meaning to sound rude if I came across that way.

Richmond native here. Moved to DC. Moved back. The city has exploded since I was a kid and even in the last 3-5 years. Coming from NOVA it was a bit of culture shock as to how FUCKING NICE people are in Richmond. It's got that southern charm. You couldn't pay me enough money to go back to NOVA.

Scott's Addition - Beer Meca
The Fan - Food, night life, millennial central
Cary Town - Food, millennial central, quirky shops and quaint
Brown's/Belle Isle - Mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, tubing, rock climbing, summer concerts
Short Pump - NOVAish if that's what she's in to, summer concerts at Innsbrook
State Parks galore - Powhatan, Pocahontas, Bear Creek Lake,
Pretty killer access to Norfolk/VA Beach, Cville, Fburg, etc.

Top Employers: Carmax, Altria, Capital One, Anthem, Wells Fargo, Banking in General, CapTech (shameless plug), Dominion, Tessellate, Markel, the State in general

Edit: Before EITHER one of you think about applying to jobs just ask here first. I think between the RVA bros (Me, Herold, Gallamore) and our associated network we can get you or her a referral.

Sidenote: I've met more people from Pittsburgh than any other city. Like it's not even close and is probably on par with every other city combined. The city itself wasn't a bad place to visit the few times I went with my ex but man is it depressing to see a city you can tell is a shell of it's former self.

RE: Richmond Weekend Trip Suggestions - RawrImAMonster - 01-24-2019

I enjoy visiting Pittsburgh from time to time for shows, but I definitely wouldn't want to live there. Half of the places you go to have this weird thing where they won't take cards. It's 2019, get your shit together.

I've been a few times too. It just seems super hilly everywhere and kind of gray all the time. And it feels pretty isolated from anywhere else.

thank u, next
