I don't have catastrophic engine failure!! Yet - KettleKooked - 11-06-2018

So after 4 years of dreaming I have finally got one. A BMW E60 M5 with a 6-speed, no SMG's for me! I remember the Top Gear review that I watched during my pre-teen years, with Jeremy clarkson bashing on the thing for how horrible it was in town and the stupid satnav woman and indicator stocks. And how his opinion changed when he hit the M button and drove the damn thing. The car embodies what it means to be an enthusiast. Engineering not for practicality or profit, but for passion and fun. Who in their right mind would say "hey, let's take our V10 F1 motor and make it fit in our 5 series." This thing is just silly, I'm driving around in a bmw luxury sedan with a 5 liter, 40 valve, dual vanos, odd firing V10 with a 6 speed manual!

I found this car by a stroke of luck when I just happened to check craigslist Chicago. I talked to the guy and decided to buy the car. I flew out from GSP to DTW to pick up the car Saturday the 3rd of November. I then drove to Virginia to see my parents, and then JMU and finally Clemson where it is now. I have already put 1,200 miles on the car and boy is it bad on gas. Big Grin
The car has had rod bearings and throttle actuators done, and Troy Jeup offered $8,500 for the motor alone so the motor is healthy.

Love the color combo. There is something special about those cars regardless of how goofy looking they are. I'm a sucker for any kind of absurdly high horsepower sedan.

Yeah especially the manual M5s. They were only an option for North America and only about 900 are in the states, 1100 total in the world.

that's an amazing car. i'm looking back to what i drove at your age and i was definitely nowhere near as cool.

first thing i looked for on your mod list was an exhaust system. long tubes, even better! there's no better way to bludgeon your eardrums into a deep sleep than with 10 screaming cylinders.

Win!

Every time I hear one I rush out and look at them on craigslist. IMO one of the best ever sounds to hit the planet. Then I rush over to the forums and scurry back to my hole . These things are a ticking time bomb of awesomeness. I wish you good luck and hope you enjoy every minute of it. I did hear there is now an aftermarket solution for the VANOS that brings that cost from $4,500 down to like $1200 I think? I still have bad thoughts on a blue Interlagos one..

Man, I'm psyched to finally see one of those in the club!  I eventually wound up in an e39 but I kept an eye out for a 6spd e60 in my search.  Couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on the 100k 2006 model I found, but man, they're worth it for the sound alone.

Good stuff on the bearings and actuators being replaced.  Keep us posted on it, and have fun!

Love the color combo and congrats!! Please change out those kidneys.

I gotta see this when you're home for the holidays Big Grin

That sound is just unholy sexualness. Awesome car and have fun scaring children & old people with that noise!

DUDE! You did it! Congrats, man. Luckily you've got the resources to make the pain of owning this a little easier to handle. Can't wait to see it.

Ugh, I'm so dissapointed I didn't get to  see  hear it when you were in town, but thanks for the videos!

Please form a single line at the window to bet on "M5 vs RS6: The First to go Kablooie"

Yeah not a fan of the grills but it has grown on me. Would love a standard set black though.

You have no idea hahaha....engine braking in 1st down a hill around 7k rpm makes the most amazing crackles and bangs. I would say 70% of the people I see turn their head to see what is coming, the phone videos don't do justice.

RE: I don't have catastrophic engine failure!! Yet - KettleKooked - 11-08-2018

I honestly can't wait to hear this thing full blast going down the front straight at VIR. 3rd gear @ 8000rpm and 120mph

RE: I don't have catastrophic engine failure!! Yet - JPolen01 - 11-08-2018

Engine braking in 1st? Dear god. If I tried that in my civic I think it would explode.
