Yammie Brap 180 - V1GiLaNtE - 07-22-2018 What we have here is a 1998 Yamaha RT180. Basically, your most run of the mill trail bike. 180cc, 2stroke, oil injection. A long time friend of mine and his brother bought this WAAYY back in high school to ride around the power lines and what-not when we were "kids". Flash forward to today and it was ridden for a while at their river house and then it sat for the last year in the garage. I've always wanted a little trail bike to throw on a hitch carrier on the 4Runner to haul out to the woods when we're camping. The stars aligned and it worked out that I scooped this up for free with the goal being I restore it and bring it to his bachelor party in the woods in October (DEAL). Initial assessment is what I would expect for an old motorcycle. Strip it down, clean the carb, clean the tank, replace filters/spark plug, check if the tires hold air, and then go ride the snot out of it. The gas tank at first glance was rusty, but when I was able to pull it and take a look on the workbench it surprised me to see that just the "ridge" where it rests on the frame was rusty and that the rest of the tank was pretty much spotless. This could be a good sign that the tank will require a little less work that I was imagining. Any tips on cleaning old tanks would be appreciated! I'll keep a tally of costs here at the top. Bike cost: Free
After getting it home last night, I've managed to complete the following: - Clutch cable lubed - Throttle cable lubed - Fork sanctions cleaned of spot rust - Old air filter removed - Dirt/rust clean up on frame. The chain/sprocket looks pretty crap and honestly it's like $50 to replace the whole thing. I'll definitely do that, but for the immediate future I want to get it in running condition so for now I'll probably just clean and lube. Then I'll start tackling "longevity" mods. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
Yammie Brap 180 - Senor_Taylor - 07-22-2018 Hell yeah! Dirt bikes are a hoot. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk RE: Yammie Brap 180 - .RJ - 07-23-2018 nice! RE: Yammie Brap 180 - V1GiLaNtE - 07-23-2018 Part of me wants to turn this into a little tracker build or something. Basically a small headlight, a new flat seat, and fab up a little fender for the rear. The Sr250's are a real inspiration.
RE: Yammie Brap 180 - Jake - 07-23-2018 That'd be a fun little pit bike to have. Shame my trailer is already kinda full, I don't need another toy like this. Did I mention wheelies in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear..? RE: Yammie Brap 180 - V1GiLaNtE - 07-24-2018 Pulled the carb last night and cleaned it up. Installed some new fuel hose and filter. It was fairly clean on the inside with a little bit of gunk in the main and pilot jet. The biggest PITA was reassembling the airbox/boot onto the bike and carb. Did a first pass with CLR. A lot of gunk came out, but I need more to fill the whole tank. I'm going to buy some white vinegar and soak this weekend so I can keep and eye on it to rotate. It's kinda that last think between me and attempting to start it.
RE: Yammie Brap 180 - .RJ - 07-24-2018 how's the ignition parts look? RE: Yammie Brap 180 - Senor_Taylor - 07-24-2018 Step 1: Get a bike carrier for your hitch Step 2: Take this with you on your camping trips Step 3: ???? Step 4: Profit RE: Yammie Brap 180 - ScottyB - 07-24-2018 def down for some additional brappage in MM. looks super nice for what you got it for. that would make a super fun knockaround bike for when you get that cabin up on some land! Wiring for the most part is complete and intact. I guess I could rig up a temp fuel tank and try and get it started, no? I have a feeling this is going to lead to a bigger ADV bike.. RE: Yammie Brap 180 - .RJ - 07-24-2018 Is it new enough that it has electronic ignition parts? May want to test whatever parts are on there to be sure. RE: Yammie Brap 180 - V1GiLaNtE - 07-24-2018 (07-24-2018, 03:00 PM).RJ Wrote: Is it new enough that it has electronic ignition parts? RE: Yammie Brap 180 - V1GiLaNtE - 07-25-2018 Attempted to start last night using a "remote" fuel tank. No Dice. Kicks and kicks and kicks, but won't turnover. I checked the plug and I am indeed getting spark. Pulled the plug and there was no gas on it. My research tells me that the carb is not filling with fuel if there is no gas in the cylinder? I guess I will need to pull the carb and see if the bowls have fuel in them. I'm going to get some starting fluid and see if it will at least kick-over that way. Worst case scenario I can buy a brand new carb for $16 on Amazon.. Carb gods. Thoughts? RE: Yammie Brap 180 - Deceus - 07-25-2018 I don't know anything about dirt bikes but the bowls should definitely have your answer. Could be as simple as the float valve being stuck shut. That would keep fuel from filling the bowls no matter how good the supply was. Will probably be filled with metal shavings and need a rebuild anyways. |
