What is a speed shift? - JackoliciousLegs - 02-11-2004 What is speed shifting? Explain... - Mike - 02-11-2004 PORK SANDWICHES! Re: What is a speed shift? - .RJ - 02-11-2004 JackoliciousLegs Wrote:Explain... A quick way to turn your transmission fluid into a pool of metal shavings? - Ryan T - 02-11-2004 clutch? Whats that? - KPWSerpiente - 02-11-2004 Are we talking about powershifting (not lifting off the gas during the shift) or about clutchless shifting (just as it sounds, slamming the car into gears without use of the clutch pedal)? Either is not going to be good for the car unless you have a clutchless tranmission or some kind of built in clutch activated rev limiter that allows you to shift without lifting. Quote:clutch? Whats that? One of those crazy Japanese inventions that as a byproduct requires a driver to do more than just hold the car straight while pressing down on the gas. Crazy! -T - JohnC - 02-12-2004 I've always understood "speed shifting" to involve not taking your foot off the gas when shifting gears... (but still using the clutch) - Ryan T - 02-13-2004 How about not taking your foot off the gas AND not using the clutch. Now theres a winner. - Mike - 02-13-2004 JMULT1 Wrote:How about not taking your foot off the gas AND not using the clutch. Now theres a winner. Supposedly some people can do it as long as they know their tranny well enough. - BLINGMW - 02-13-2004 um.... no. I don't think both are an option, that's the route to RJ's metal shavings. I'm glad there's some confusion though... I thought speed shifting was shifting without the clutch, but I'm not THAT sure. And yeah, powershifting was using clutch but staying on the gas. But you can't have both. AFAIK, speed shifting is not bad for anything if you do it right. If you pull it out of gear just as there is no load on the trans (at that magical fraction of a second when you've just let off the gas and engine is neither putting down power nor dragging) and match revs perfectly for the next gear, the shifter comes out and drops right into gear just like it does when you use the clutch. I'm sure some trans are tougher than others, I could pull it off in my Fiero without too much trouble, my MX6 was the toughest, and I've never tried it in a bimmer. .....I know what I'm doing tomorrow! - karioth - 02-13-2004 Power shifting as I understood it is shifting your car at a specific RPM so that the gears are in sync in which case the clutch is not needed. I also understand that this does NOT damage your transmission if you do it correctly, however shift at the wrong RPM and listen to your gears grind... Speed Shifting I think is basically clutch dumping between gears, probably gains you some acceleration but will wear your clutch in a hurry. and thats my 2 cents - .RJ - 02-13-2004 You *can* shift without using the clutch, provided you do what chaddock said... I dont recommend making a habit out of it though
- BLINGMW - 02-13-2004 haha... glad to see you think it's completely the opposite of what I thought it was  We really have our act together. I want to know what the consensus is! Here's a couple forums that were thinking it's the same way as I did, but I also saw others where there's an equal amount of confusion: http://www.mustangforums.com/forum_post ... =9716&PN=1 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... 56052.html Anywho, the E30 likes it just fine. Speed shifting that is. And by that I mean not using the clutch. Powershifting (my concept of it) is for people with more $$ than me. It's gotta be hell on the drivetrain, I guess it's like launching the car between every gear. But sure, it's "faster", and if I was a drag racer I might be interested. "Speed" shifting is a bit of a misnomer for me though, it takes me a second or two to hunt the exact revs for the next gate, I can shift a LOT faster with the clutch. I assume it takes a lot of practice to do it quickly, and in most situations there wouldn't be a point to it, you can shift just as fast with the clutch with the same results, your left foot wasn't doing anything anyway. But during a braking zone, needing a downshift or two, I guess you could get away with pure left foot braking, doing away with the need for heel-toeing. Or if you needed a mid corner shift.... That'd be pretty cool. Godlike maybe. But I'm not trying it at those speeds. hock: As the revs increase and the speed increases, messing up that shift gets more and more expensive.Try it on a nice flat road at a low rev 2/3 or 3/4 shift and take your time, start by keeping speed constant and be gentle on the shifter, it's pretty easy. - JackoliciousLegs - 02-13-2004 i think i'll pass.... - Evan - 02-13-2004 I shifted my 240 without the clutch all the time. That was, of course, because I didnt give a shit about that car. But done correctly, its actually better for the transmission than using the clutch and syncros. Speed shifting is similar to shifting without the clutch except with speed shifting you are slamming the gears instead of matching revs. obviously not good.[/list] - .RJ - 02-13-2004 Evan Wrote:I shifted my 240 without the clutch all the time. For the entire 3 days you owned it? - Evan - 02-18-2004 .RJ Wrote:3 months beeyatchEvan Wrote:I shifted my 240 without the clutch all the time. - Mike - 02-18-2004 I've been playing with this clutchless shifting the past few days, it's kinda fun but not worth the risk IMO. - KPWSerpiente - 02-27-2004 Last weekend when I was in FFx I had my boy Cory finish up some wiring for me (I suck at wiring and wiring things up for cars is his job). Now I have DSMlink set up to allow me to powershift (not lifting off the gas when shifting). It will drop and hold the RPM to whatever I choose, I have it set at 5,000 right now, between the shifts...very nice. Maybe I am too much of a pansy, but I think God invented the clutch for a reason and I always utilize it between shifts. -T - ScottyB - 02-27-2004 wow, i dont know much about DSMlink but it sounds like a really nice setup...ive never heard of a powershift program like that. i'm with you on the clutch use as well. for what it's worth, you dont really lose any time just pushing your left foot down for a second - DierwulfBL - 02-28-2004 KPWSerpiente Wrote:Maybe I am too much of a pansy, but I think God invented the clutch for a reason and I always utilize it between shifts. I second that, gears grinding doesnt ever sound good. That DSMlink sounds awesome too instead of stayin on the gas when clutching and lettin the rev limiter stop the revs  thats only 6200rpms for me though  |
