Post-Prius Depression (The Quest for a New Car) - CaptainHenreh - 07-27-2017 Ah, fuck me up the dickhole with a rusty spoon, I fucking hate this. Insurance company of the guy that hit the Prius (progressive) were being royal fuckfaces. Still no check for the Prius, though it's definitely totaled. Fuck Progressive with a digging iron. I know they didn't get rich writing checks, but fuck, we aren't at fault here. Went to look at a TL last night. Seemed good: 2007, 138k, TypeS, recent water pump, timing belt, oil pump seal...kept up with the maintenance. I ask him if everything works on the inside. He says yes, but the nav DVD is scratched. I ask him about accident history, he says none. I ask him about rust, he says the hood has some road pockmarks, but otherwise it's great. Any other problems, says I? He replies that he had to disconnect the Acuralink since it was causing a battery drain (which is super common, not an issue) and that he changed the front three plugs last oil change but still needed the back three. He is asking 9k. (8600 is KBB Dealer Retail) It's high, but he seems like an enthusiast who has taken care of his car, soooooo. I get there. Drive 70 miles. To meet this dude. It needs new rotors. It has a valve cover leak on the back bank. The passenger side window regulator is malfunctioning, the car is filthy dirty ("It's my daily!"). "Hey the AC works great!" he says. Do you ever have to put refrigerant in? "No, but I did have to charge it at the beginning of the summer." GOD DAMN IT THAT IS WHAT THAT MEANS. TPMS light is on "oh yeah two of my sensors broke, and I just put in valve stems." I drive it. It makes nice noises. It's not as fast as I thought but it's fine. It's a fine car. Nothing is a deal breaker but in my mind I'm like $, $, $. See, if I buy a POS that needs work, eh, that's on me. If it leaves me on the side of the road because I didn't change that fringy accessory belt then, well, I'm on the side of the road and I guess I'll figure it out. But this isn't my car. So I explain this to the guy. I'm like look, I'm gonna have to probably drop almost a grand in this son of a bitch right off the bat and that's assuming you've kept up with all the suspension stuff. I offer 6800, you can sleep on it. Thanks for your time. He texts me this morning that is price is firm. Ok guy, good luck. Thanks for wasting my goddamned time. Re: Post-Prius Depression (The Quest for a New Car) - Apoc - 07-27-2017 FWIW, I airways request pictures of things like door jambs, brakes, and valve covers and then try to negotiate price before I'll even agree to see a car in person. How sellers respond to that is a pretty good litmus of whether they're worth my time. Also, anyone priced over dealer retail is an idiot who thinks they're special... and therefore not worth my time. That's probably why it takes me six months to buy a car... Right now I'm looking at mid-2000's hondas, acuras, and lexuses. Looking for something with four doors, a sunroof, and long term reliability potential.
Re: Post-Prius Depression (The Quest for a New Car) - Jake - 07-27-2017 2G or 3G TL-S with the transmission already replaced by Honderp. Re: Post-Prius Depression (The Quest for a New Car) - WRXtranceformed - 07-27-2017 Bummer man, I loved my Type-S but it was meticulously maintained. If the new owner has done the same it's probably still running strong. My mom is still driving my brother's IS250 from that time period and it's a tank. It did have its motor replaced under some kind of recall or warranty related issue though, which surprised me. You may want to look into that if you are peeping those. If you are looking at more TLs, definitely look more toward the 3G than the 2G...they had less transmission issues typical of Honderps. You will still probably want to replace the pressure sensor switches as soon as you buy it as an insurance policy (because nobody except a handful of enthusiasts do it iirc and most of the transmission issues are related to those) Re: Post-Prius Depression (The Quest for a New Car) - CaptainHenreh - 07-27-2017 davej Wrote:CaptainHenreh Wrote:hondas, acuras, and lexuses. Is "Lexus" latin? No? Then shut yer cock holster, Dave. <3 Re: Post-Prius Depression (The Quest for a New Car) - Jake - 07-27-2017 WRXtranceformed Wrote:Bummer man, I loved my Type-S but it was meticulously maintained. If the new owner has done the same it's probably still running strong. The 2G TL's had issues with the 3rd gear clutch pack and excessive slippage. Honda extended the warranty to 7 years or 100k miles (or something like that) so many of the 2G's have replacement trans' with the problem corrected. They seem to be pretty solid beyond that, so I told Rex if he could find a 2G with the trans done and maintenance up to date, why not do it. They are cheap as shit and are the nicest 2002-2003 Accord you could buy. Disclaimer: my new man has a 2002 TL-S with 125k and unknown transmission status (seems okay?) hence why I've started learning about these white-bread luxocars.
