I bought a moped - EclipseTurbno93 - 09-25-2016 I bought a moped. What I know: 2003 Kinetic TFR50. It has an engine. It has a new clutch. It has a slightly bent rear rim. It needs a new ignition since the guy lost the keys. It has pedals, they are not aligned. It has brakes that seem to work. It's adorable, and I love it. Complete impulse buy, I'm kind of stoked about it though. Eventually I'm going to need a helmet so if anyone with a big head like me is selling their old one, let me know! Re: I bought a moped - Senor_Taylor - 09-25-2016 Sweet! How easy is it to pedal? Step 1: go to Play It Again Sports Step 2: purchase XXL Hockey Helmet Step 3: purchase fake stache, cape optional Step 4: ride to glory Re: I bought a moped - Jake - 09-26-2016 Why? Also, this is wonderful. Re: I bought a moped - EclipseTurbno93 - 09-26-2016 Senor_Taylor Wrote:Sweet! How easy is it to pedal?Surprisingly not bad. It has a little switch on the rear hub that lets you switch between bicycle mode and motor mode. I mean I wouldn't want to go up Port Republic on it without power or anything... but it could be worse. ScottyB Wrote:Yus. Jake Wrote:Why?For many perfectly good, completely logical reasons that I just can't remember right now. Re: I bought a moped - davej - 09-26-2016 Dibs on the passenger seat for the first bike night at sheetz! I'm not sure that would make it up Port with out you pedaling. But seriously, you should leave it on campus to run between buildings. I'll let you store it in the SSC or maybe it'll be in Massanutten, depending on my meeting schedules. I bought a moped - EclipseTurbno93 - 10-24-2016 I made the journey home this weekend to pick up The Red Streak. At first, my plan was to take the Miata down and borrow my dad's explorer sport trac to get it back up to the burg, then to put up with driving a slow, gas guzzling pseudo-truck for a month or so. Taylor decided that was a silly plan and offered to let me borrow his truck to make the journey hock: First thoughts were "aw hell no I don't want to break that thing." Second thought was "man that would be way more convenient," so after repeatedly making sure he was okay with it, we swapped keys and I set off, feeling the pressure. The trip was thankfully uneventful and I got to stop by Richmond to see Matt which was nice. The next day I had some time before I needed to set off, so I dug into the moped a bit. First I gave it a spray-down with the power sprayer to knock off the appalling amount of dirt that had built up and gave it (and Taylor's truck) a quick wash. Overall it's in pretty good shape, a couple small rust spots on the frame, but nothing deep or serious. The inside of the gas tank also looks generally clean, no obvious rusting or significant build up. Next up was to try to start troubleshooting why it was not wanting to start. First thing I noticed was that the loose belt was slipping as I was trying to turn the engine over. The procedure to tighten the belt made me chuckle, as all you do is loosen the three engine mounting bolts and pull the engine forward in the frame and re-tighten it. This made turning the engine much, much easier and eliminated one of the terrible noises it was making  Next, I checked was to make sure I had compression (thumb over the spark plug hole and turn it over) which was good. It was also at this time that I realized it has no exhaust on it, but that's a problem for another time. Then I checked to see if it had spark. Since I do not have a key for it, I just pulled the switch and spliced the ignition wires together, leaving out the kill switch wire to eliminate a variable. I then held the plug by the boot and touched the casing to the head in order to ground it and kicked it over. Nada, no spark. Decided to make sure it wasn't just the plug so I got a new one and did the same thing, but had the same results. Checked the wiring connections to make sure everything was clean and everything looked okay :dunno: At this point I ran out of time so put it all back together and loaded up to head back. Had another blessedly uneventful ride home and it is now sitting on my porch waiting to be messed with again. From the research I've done, it seems the next step is to check and clean the ignition contact points and make sure the magneto is indeed producing electricity. Unfortunately, the contact points are only accessible with the engine removed from the frame, so I guess that might be the next thing to do. I have never worked on a small engine or a magneto driven system or a carbureted engine, so a lot of new things for me, but I'm learning a lot and it is fun so far. Thanks again to Taylor for saving my butt  Re: I bought a moped - Senor_Taylor - 10-24-2016 I don't remember the last time my truck was this clean. I parked it across the street so I can see the sun shine off of it I appreciate it! It was nice driving an NB to work and not some rattly NA. Let me know if you need help with the bike, maybe we'll do both it and your Miata's exhaust on the same day. Re: I bought a moped - *insertusernamehere* - 10-24-2016 I CANT WAIT TO RIDE OH MY GOD and I'm still holding out to be in charge of spraying it and coming up with a "livery" for it with the pin striping. Also some tall ass stacked pipes coming up the back for your exhaust hahaha Please record yourself struggling up the Port Repub hill. Re: I bought a moped - SlimKlim - 10-24-2016 I had a spark issue on my first bike that took forever to troubleshoot, I ended up having to take it to a cycle shop and it still to them a while to figure it out. I dunno how yours is set up, you might want to make sure it's not the plug wire/ignition coil before taking the motor out of the frame. (Although as far as engine removals go, that one should be a walk in the park if it does end up being the magneto.) If that thing hasn't run in while just go ahead and clean/rebuild the carb. A lot of old carb'd bike engines won't even tolerate sitting for one winter without having to take the damn things apart and de-gunk them. Since that thing is a single cylinder (I assume) you don't have to worry about balancing them, so it's a good way to dip your toe into dealing with carbs. I'm excited to see you start tinkering with it. I want to ride it. I bought a moped - EclipseTurbno93 - 10-25-2016 So I'd like everyone to forget everything I just said, because it runs baby. So after staring at the wiring diagram for a bit, I suddenly realized I'm an idiot because the way the ignition switch works is that when the key is not turned, it keeps the entire ignition circuit grounded, thereby, no spark. Kind of the opposite of most ignition switches as far as I know. I quickly rushed home, grabbed some gas and put my 2 stroke oil in, replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the lines, then rewired it to bypass the ground and reattached the killswitch. I gave it a kick and it roared to life immediately. I think I literally jumped out of excitement. So first impressions, it's loud as all hell and I'm sure my upstairs neighbors hate me now, but I'm too happy to care. I then told everyone I know that I managed to fix a thing and started buttoning everything back up. Taylor came by and took this great picture of me with my happy face then we loaded it up into the truck and took it to the empty lots above the Harrison for her maiden voyage. We pedaled it around at first to get our bearings, then fired it up and let it get up to temp. Then it was time... https://vimeo.com/188915564 So, as expected, it's pretty slow. On flat ground it gets up to about 25 ish and on the downhill, I got it up to about 30 before chickening out because the back wheel is a little wobbly. Brakes work fabulously, and it runs like a top. After running it uphill for a while, it starts to give up, not sure if that's the clutch getting too hot or something else. The only other issue was that none of the electricals seemed to be working. A quick check around later I found a loose wire in one of the connectors, so now that's fixed too. So yeah. That was way easier than I expected. Re: I bought a moped - *insertusernamehere* - 10-25-2016 YaaaaaaAAAAAASSSSSSSS Re: I bought a moped - Senor_Taylor - 10-25-2016 You fixed the lights?!?! Hell yeah! Thanks for letting me ride it! Be sure to save those videos of me for the mems. Sent from my SM-G900R4 using Tapatalk Re: I bought a moped - Jake - 10-26-2016 Please bring this to the track somehow. Re: I bought a moped - SlimKlim - 10-26-2016 Awesome! Re: I bought a moped - ScottyB - 10-26-2016 i love this Re: I bought a moped - EclipseTurbno93 - 10-28-2016 Well, the moped got me TO work, but failed to get me back. Update to come.. I bought a moped - EclipseTurbno93 - 11-02-2016 Okay, so basically what happened is I got to work without much drama. It did feel a bit down on power at one point but it picked back up after a quick restart. When I went to leave work everything seemed fine at first, then while going down the hill by the train tracks my front brakes suddenly stopped working. That was exciting. Then immediately afterward when I tried to take off from the light, it started sputtering and died on me. I wheeled it to the sidewalk and kicked it back on, and everything seemed fine again, until it cut off a minute later. I messed with it on the sidewalk a bit and found that it idled okay, but as soon as I went to give it any sort of throttle, it cut out and shut off. I then admitted defeat for the night and called to the MM chat for help. Joaquin came and picked me up and got the moped and I home. So I'm thinking its time to clean the carburetor? That's all I can think of at this point. Taylor mentioned to me before that ethanol gas can mess up carburetors as well, not sure if that has anything to do with it. Re: I bought a moped - SlimKlim - 11-02-2016 Yeah definitely start with the carb, my first bike would idle but die when you touched the throttle because the carbs were so gunked up. Re: I bought a moped - ViPER1313 - 11-03-2016 Also fuel filter if it has one. If it had been sitting there is a good chance all the recent activity sucked a bunch of crap through it. If it's like a boat carb there may be a secondary filter at the carb inlet. |
