I still say the best exhaust I've ever heard on one of these is the "raptor" muffler from Advance Auto welded in there.

It was either open up with some self deprecation or a comment about how I was copying Cabell because I wanted to be him when I grew up. I chose the later because I'm 26 and technical a grown up.

I love the V8. Buttery smooth and just glides on the highway.
All time 4hi should be more than sufficient for your needs. If you're really in a pickle, just lock the center diff. I suggest your first mod being a set of Weather Tech Digital Fit mats. T4r.org has a group buy with a vendor for a stupid low price.

X2. The regular floor mats turn black/brown in about 4 minutes if your feet ever see mud, and they'll stay that way. Weathertech's are amazing because they fit the floor lines perfectly and make a bowl to trap everything.

We just got weathertechs for the LR4, debating dropping the cash for putting them in my truck as well. I just have generic black rubber mats in there now, and stock ones in the rear that are getting pretty dingy.

I'll have to check that out. Whip came with regular floor mats and a set of stock rubber mats too. Probably not as good as the weathertech's though, people love those things.

OEM all-weather mats for the 4runner can be had on ebay for fairly cheap. They aren't a "full" protection mat like the weathertech's, but they came with my old car and worked fine for me.

Weathertech also makes really good digital fit no drill mud guards / flaps for a lot of applications. I will probably scoop a set for my truck. I have always gone OEM for all weather mats and never been let down though

In typical 4Runner fashion, this thing has been both the greatest and most boring thing I've ever owned. It never breaks, it always starts and because the PO did so much maintenance (with records!) I pretty much just check fluids once a week and put gas in it at this point.
I did have the exhaust manifold develop a leak that cost me some change, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. I can see why these things have such a cult following.
Also, towing is fun, but I'm not sure if the trailer I was using to haul some furniture had touchy brakes or what, but the module in the 4Runner seemed to go from 0 to 100% braking, locking up the trailer I was using. I don't have a trailer (yet) but just interested if anyone knows ways to adjust it. I'm guessing my load was too light which was probably the bigger factor. I can't imagine people tow much with these things, 7000lbs just doesn't seem like that much considering this is built on a truck platform.

It's not built in, its a package upgrade. I have a little unit in the cockpit that shows me braking levels.
I ended up just getting a new exhaust manifold on the driver's side, mine did fail emissions.

If the trailer was light, you need to adjust how much force the brake controller exerts on the trailer brakes. There should be some +/- buttons that let you adjust it, as well as a slider that will give you 100% brakes when applied (for emergency use, normally). The idea is to get up to about 20 mph, pull that slider, and have the trailer almost lock the wheels but back it down a click or two. That's a good starting point, then adjust as necessary based on load/weight.
7k lbs is a LOT for a 4Runner. Yes, it's based on the Tacoma and has a real frame, but weight is also dependent on wheelbase, braking ability, and weight of tow vehicle. My Range Rover is rated for 7700 and has another ~5" of wheelbase on the 4Runner, which will go a long way with stability.
People have used 4Runners to pull smaller cars (Civics, Integras, E30s) on open trailers but I would be very cautious beyond that - moreso due to the wheelbase than anything else.
