2001 Toyota RAV4 - Mike - 05-13-2016

Inherited this from my mom. My dad had been holding onto it for years, but decided he no longer had room and was not willing to sell it. We're a one car household, why not take a second for free?

Picked up with 135k miles in DC w/ a faulty power driver's door actuator.
12 days and 3500 miles later, she's in Portland. Caught a CEL about a third of the way into the trip. O2 sensor. I attempted to replace it in Minneapolis, but was unable to remove it without twisting the hell out of a POS CarQuest O2 sensor socket.
Other than the O2 sensor, she ran like a top. All fluids are exactly where they started. Can't say that for a typical trip with a certain A4 Wink
Only saw about 22mpg - bad O2 sensor, bike on top? I expected better.
She struggled up a lot of hills and I didn't want to run it to redline because she's been babied all her life and I wanted to get home. Desperately needs another 20hp - I think there was a supercharger available for these?
AWD came in pretty handy - probably the first time it's ever activated as I was on some muddy road in a South Dakota downpour.
Headlights were typical Toyota yellowed. Spent 10 minutes with a $8 kit, only used the cleaner, and they're pretty damned shiny. Will polish and seal them when I get around to it.
Soundtrack was provided via a cassette adapter. F yeah!
Decent looking car for what it is.
Had a roof rack with crossbars so all I had to do was pick up a Yakima rack that fit.
Great sight lines - it's kind of nice not having 14 airbags obstructing your vision (it has 2).
I'm pleased. I forgot how enjoyable a simple vehicle can be. No bullshit, just driving.

If you didn't keep up with my trip on FB, your loss Wink

Plans: clean up headlights, replace O2 sensor, fix power door actuator, kill a rattle or two, new head unit, and drive the pants off it.

Nice! Glad to hear it treated you well on the long drive. I was following your pics it looks like you had some interesting sights! My mom has one of these and it is literally impossible to kill. She does *not* baby it and it's making all kinds of whining and groaning noises but somehow still trundling along like a tank.

At least you have one reliable vehicle in your house Tongue

Re: 2001 Toyota RAV4 - ScottyB - 05-13-2016

so jealous of that trip. great little car.

i'd be well pleased with that MPG for an old, boxy, AWD trucklet thing with a jungle gym on the top and having crossed the continental divide.

with legit snow tires i bet that thing would be hell on wheels when you need to get through 4 or 5 inches +

Re: 2001 Toyota RAV4 - SlimKlim - 05-13-2016

"Trucklet" is my new favorite word.

Alarm hasn't made noise for like a decade. I mucked around with some software reset type stuff with the remote last night in the dark, but info on a 15 year old alarm is hard to come by. No luck. Today I popped the hood...

Hrmmm?

Had to redo the engine harness in my dad's old Blazer long ago. Fucking squirrels. The cats in my VA neighborhood sucked.

30 minutes later and I'm sure to piss the neighbors off real bad. It's obnoxiously loud and with the power door not working on the driver side I'm sure to set it off all the time. It also has a really short auto-arm. If you dick around in the car for like 30 seconds before starting it, it's going off.

You started the car and the engine was cold? I'm lost.

Reading is hard.

No CEL? Not actually saying what you are trying to convey is cute.

Re: 2001 Toyota RAV4 - WRXtranceformed - 05-17-2016

My turn.. A crack formed in your gauge cluster?

Nonono, it was SO cold even the needle was trying to point out that the engine should be checked.

Re: 2001 Toyota RAV4 - Senor_Taylor - 05-17-2016

ooh oh oh oh! I know what's going on. The battery symbol is backwards. Thus explaining the power door failure.

He replaced the O2 sensor and the CEL went out, and he thinks he's clever.

if only we had those terms invented for us during the Great Hate, half the forum would have needed counseling if we were that pussified

anyway,

don't honeydick us with that little remark. let Track Mike come out and live one more time.

Re: 2001 Toyota RAV4 - Mike - 05-17-2016

seems it was made for this motor, but it only fit in a scion or something. no such luck.

i pulled out the rear seats. weight savings track worthy++. huge amount of cargo now. fuck yeah trucklet.

passed inspection, registered, waiting on bike plates. woot.

Re: 2001 Toyota RAV4 - Mike - 05-23-2016

Power door fixed. That kind of sucked, but only $50.

Small rattle in the passenger door speaker area. Will probably pull that side off and put some sound deadening in.

Then I'll likely be looking at a new head unit. Carplay like a what! Any recos? Missed out on some stupid deal from Panasonic like a week before I got the car. Kicking myself for not jumping on it.
