This will be a car again - BLINGMW - 03-13-2016

I had a "stolen" BMW "used for a bank job" that I needed to get rid of. I convinced a younger man to trade a haunted Miata for it. I just needed something with a clean title, and I don't believe in ghosts. After laying low for a few months I figured I'd see if I could turn it back into a fun car!
I picked a rainy day to fail roll starting it down the driveway. But with a jump it starts, it runs, it drives!

And compression test ok! But it's got positive camber on the right front. Subframe, frame rails, and control arms seem ok by my crude measurements. I removed the headlights and front clip to confirm the damage is all in the core support, seems to have pushed the right strut mount out a bit.

I'm not sure what the plan is but I'll keep you in the loop. It ends in me driving most of this car to FL for the GRM 2016 challenge.

Re: This will be a car again - *insertusernamehere* - 03-14-2016

I just saw video the other day on Facebook of a miata with no doors, panels, bumper and the back off of the unibody chopped off autocrossing. If i could link it would. It's posted in Blue Ridge Region - SCCA facebook page.

This makes me so happy to see Michelle nursed back to health. I can't wait to see what you do with it. Keep me up to date with when you're working on it and if I'm free I'll come to Roanoke to "visit" my girlfriend.

You haven't done this yet?

Mush mush!

Holy shit I need that.

Re: This will be a car again - *insertusernamehere* - 03-14-2016

I would actually spend the $2k for that.

Comes complete with blood riddled body panles from Averys Salvage Yard!

Also someone in MM should buy this now.

THAT I can agree with.
I am pretty happy if it actually weighs 1500lbs as stated. My "plan" is not quite that extreme, I'd like to ditch just about everything that isn't required for driving, but I intend to keep most of the bodywork. If I ended up anything close to 1700lbs I'd be thrilled. In theory it could take a second off 0-60.

BLINGMW Wrote:...pushed the right strut mount out a bit.
hrrr durrr after comparing distance between the "strut" towers vs the red Miata, I came to the conclusion that they are, indeed, shocks. Gotta get out of BMW mode. Fingers crossed I'll max out the control arm camber adjustments and see where I am before tying the thing to a tree....

I'm going to start selling off the not-required-for driving parts, including most of the interior, if anyone's looking for something....

Re: This will be a car again - Senor_Taylor - 03-14-2016

Can confirm seats are actually pretty decent. I hope you put at least one in your red one.

My prof is currently overseas but he wanted to buy the seats when Taylor still had it. I can let him know for ya.

Thanks that'd be great! I'd love to deliver some parts to the car show.

BFH'd the frame a bit and max camber on the right puts it somehwere near the left. Took it for a spin and I'm content. Time to strip it down, order microsquirt system, and figure out how to make the front look ok. Hood and fender likely useable.

Any thoughts on how awful these would be?

Re: This will be a car again - JustinG - 03-20-2016

I priced out a pair of Kirkeys with covers for like $650 or so when I had the hatçhpile. The NASA instructor/chief discount was a good thing at OG.

Id say they will be fine for driving to/from/on track. Get a seat back brace for both though.

Re: This will be a car again - Apoc - 03-20-2016

My dad raced with a Kirkey for a decade, in his 50s, and I can't remember him ever complaining about it.

Re: This will be a car again - Senor_Taylor - 07-08-2016

Do you want/need the speakers I put in this? I got a great deal on them and I need not blown speakers for my new one. Remind me and I can bring a set of rear pads and rotors for your red one I have lying around for this on Sunday.

Edit: Also, would you sell me the cupholder? My miata has the ashtray which I have no use for.

You're welcome to those things
Find me a white rear panel to make up for this busted one!

I can go back in time to the week after it was wrecked and stop myself from slamming the trunk so hard in anger.

Sounds like a good use of $ to me! I love that that all that is esentially a bolt-on.

This was at the last Roanoke autocross, must have had 3 or 4 drivers. It was wonderfully ugly!
