Hiking spots - Sully - 12-07-2015

Where are some good hiking spots up around harrisonburg and/or afton. Thinking about going up to bold rock (in nellysford, closer to afton I guess) this weekend. Depending on how that goes, I think I'd like to check out some other places too but while I'm out that way, I think I'd like to check out some scenery and mountains and shit. All the stuff I didn't do but should have while I was in school. I heard there's some trails off of skyline drive but that's as much as I know. No remote idea where trailheads are located and never been on skyline drive so :dunno:

In for this thread. Should have done more exploring and less drinking. Well maybe just more exploring and more drinking. That sounds better.

Yea bro, see I alotted space for both but grown up style drinking at cideries and vineyards lol. Not sure if hiking before or after would be a great idea but I'm up to try it. I'm not big on wine but I did a "wine tasting" at carter mouton orchard and I didn't mind the fruit wines but of course I used parentheses because although I've never been to a wine tasting, I feel like it shouldn't feel like power hour where she pours a shot of wine, explains it, and stands there with the next bottle giving you an impatient stare until you down your shot lol.

If you are going to be in Nellysford, you should probably go to Crabtree Falls. That's going to be the closest trail to your location. All the ones Cabell listed will be an hour and half north of where you'll be. Great trails, but a little farther than you might want to travel.

If you do Crabtree Falls, you can also link it with Spy Rock which is just down the AT. Did this one recently over Thanksgiving and it has some incredible views..

Ever vineyard is different (and each server is too). Considering there are 120+ vineyard in Virginia, a little variability plays in there.

How you refer to it as a shot of wine and how you approached her might explain it too

Hiking and wine tasting sound they like don't mix. I go wine tasting to taste a couple vineyards and then buy a couple bottles and sit around eating too much food and while with friends. I can't imagine going for an extended walk/hike after that. :vomit:

Yea. It sounded pretty bad when I typed it lol. Maybe a short morning hike and an afternoon sitting at bold rock having a pint sounds a little better.

I didn't feel like I approached her like "dude bro, let's pound some shots" but idk what you want me to call them. They were little plastic shot glasses filled with wine. Well one shot glass. We used the same one the whole time. My girlfriend said that's not how she did it when she went to crosskeys. Which I hear is really nice.

If a vinyard presented me with a plastic shot glass for a tasting it would, frankly, be the last time I went. Highly irregular.

edit: just looked at the website. It doesn't feel like they do any of their own wines and ciders? Definitely would explain the plastic cups, you did not go to a winery.

Re: Hiking spots - Sully - 12-08-2015

Never said I did lol. I went to check out the apple orchard and have a nice day with my now ex-gf. They had a sign for wine tasting and we thought it'd be fun. They do bold rock ciders which we didn't know they didn't do any of their own stuff but it was a decent time anyway. At least after pounding down some wine shots, we were both feeling pretty alright lol

Well there's an assload of places to hike around here, go to the outdoor store and buy a GD map. Humpback is fun, and short, spectacular views and right there at Afton so you could go down the mountain and do Bold Rock/Silverback/BlueToad/Devil's Backbone right after.

Here, just in case you can't google:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.hikingupward.com/gwnf/humpbackrocks/">http://www.hikingupward.com/gwnf/humpbackrocks/</a><!-- m -->

It's pretty, it's short, it's as challenging as you want to make it and the views are gorgeous:

I will forever remember this moment.

Keep the suggestions on places to hike. Jess and I would like to get some more hiking done next spring.

Re: Hiking spots - V1GiLaNtE - 12-08-2015

I'll add to this list when Julianne and I complete something. We usually are hiking 1-2x a month year round.

This. I seriously regret not taking more advantage of the time and opportunities I had down there.
