2009 BMW M3 - G.Irish - 09-22-2014

So our planned one year Cayman experience is coming to an end and we decided to consolidate down to one car for the time being. We wanted a sport sedan so that narrowed down the list to really only a STi, 2015 WRX, 330i, S3 or M3. Of those cars, the only one with a DCT was the M3, and it was really the best car of the group. I would've been happy with a 6-speed too, but the DCT is much less stressful for the wifey to drive in traffic so it was the best of both worlds.

We had actually decided to buy another M3 about 6 weeks ago at a dealership in Arlington, but after we had agreed to the price, the dealer came back and was like, "Oh, someone else already put down a deposit." Long story short, some reseller that buys cars from them had come by, they then tried to tell me they could switch him to another car but could we improve our offer. Fuck that, you now have to give me a better than agreed price if you want me back in the game. So yeah, that deal fell through.

So we decided to be patient and try to find the color, trim, and leather color combo we wanted. This car popped up last Tuesday, I sent him an email immediately, wired him a deposit, flew out to Dayton on Saturday, bought the car and drove it home.

Since I'll have this car for awhile, I'll probably slap some black wheels on it, and an aftermarket exhaust. Maybe the Akrapovic with the carbon fiber tips. Don't know if I'm going to put a lip or rear diffuser on, none of the diffusers I've checked out sufficiently rustle the jimmies.

Driving-wise I'll be taking it to the college autox and maybe one more autox before it gets cold. Don't know when I'll have a chance to take 'er on track, but it'll probably be next year.

Woo! It's about time someone in the club bought one of these.

I vote for something a little more classic than black rimzz though:

Good timing. I was just going to shoot you a message on FB and ask if you pulled the trigger after seeing the post on IG. Nice pick up! I was driving behind one on a back road last week and turned off my radio and put the windows down just to listen to it. One of the best sounding V8s on the road right now.

Re: 2009 BMW M3 - CaptainHenreh - 09-22-2014

neat car, I always thought Trevor's was super sexy, but yeesh, plastic gears on the throttle bodies? Why does BMW insist on putting plastic where it doesn't belong...

Re: 2009 BMW M3 - Senor_Taylor - 09-22-2014

M3s are v8s now? Interesting.

Are those the Apex reeuuummms? And if so, do they come in gunmetal?

The previous owner was actually saying that he likes to put down the windows and start it up while it's still in the garage so he can hear the engine. Of course, it could also be that he was contemplating suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Just one of those German things. Plastic where it doesn't belong, needless complexity, and cupholders that were only put in the car grudgingly.

Unfff.

And please don't get black wheels. I hate black wheels. On everything.

Whoohoo!
Though V8 and automatic.... :evileye:

haha that sounds fun... :vomit: Maybe the "engineers" that designed my string trimmer work at BMW too? :dunno:

They did but now they don't again.

E30 = N/A I4
E36 & E46 = Some variation of N/A I6
E90 & E92 = N/A V8
F80 & F82 = Boosted I6

Dual clutch bruh. 8)

I'm actually interested to see what you think of the DCT. I read an article a couple weeks ago saying that my DSG that was somewhat revolutionary 8 years ago has really been blown out of the water by new autoboxes like that ZF 8-speed. Sure my DSG can flick between gears instantaneously, but the brand new stuff can do it without all the clunks, rattles, jerky stops, starts, weird sounds, reliability concerns and expensive, special services.

I've never driven the BMW flavor of dual-clutch but I've wondered if they're a little more refined than VWs.

Re: 2009 BMW M3 - davej - 09-22-2014

great pick up G. can't wait to see it in Oct.

Re: 2009 BMW M3 - SlimKlim - 09-22-2014

Seems kinda like a "Those in Glass Houses..." situation to me, since this is coming from the guy who publicly admits his desire for an i3, which has no transmission at all.

I've driven the ZF 8AT in the 328 and 9AT in the TLX, it's good but it's still not as good as a DCT.

Also drove the S3 with DCT and it still has some hesitation before engagement at low speeds. Nothing I couldn't work around but not a refined as the M3's unit. If you set the M3 for more comfortable shifts you don't get jerked around at all. When I turn the M-mode on it gives you a good shove but it's still plenty smooth.

The Acura TLX 8DCT with torque converter was the best DCT I've tried but it's also on a much lower horsepower application. From what the design team was saying, that transmission set up can't handle a ton of power. I am curious to see how the DCT with electric motor combo works in the NSX. With the electric motor to smooth engagement at low speeds it should be just as smooth or smoother than the torque converter + DCT combo.

You guys can get together and start a kickstarter to buy me some wheels that suit your tastes.

It barely even needs a brake pedal! It's much like driving a bumper car.

Go retro. Put some 15" or 16" on it. I have both, you can try them on.

Re: 2009 BMW M3 - SlimKlim - 09-22-2014

Oh Maeng I didn't see your post. I'm pretty sure the car in that photo had those wheels from the factory, but a zillion companies make reps.

Apex EC-7s are probably the best quality reps you can get. VMR V710s and other no-name reps are cheap but shitty quality. I've had mine installed for maybe 12-15k miles and the finish looks pretty pathetic. Any piece of debris seems capable of leaving a huge scratch or just straight up gouging out a chunk of the wheel.

Interesting. I assume the S3 unit is the same as the one they're putting in the new GTI, so that's kind of disappointing. That's definitely the issue I experience with mine, getting it to start smoothly from a light takes just the right touch. Too much throttle too soon and it feels like you popped the clutch. Low RPM upshifts to 2nd can be really clumsy too, especially when the car is cold. Then there's my recent discovery that the DSG can't smoothly execute a full throttle upshift below 4k since the Stage 1 tune.

I'm still happy with the car and the DSG is a lot of fun in it's own right, but after really learning all the little character quirks it has I don't think I'd buy another one.
