Recommend me a moderately priced In-Dash - navin - 06-03-2014

I can't remember if I posted this before, but can't seem to find it from searching. Basically I'm looking for an in-dash for the 4runner for two main reasons -- 1. backup camera for trailer 2. bluetooth streaming from my iPhone for spotify/GPS

That being said and hoping that it's clear I'm not some audiophile, does any have recommendations on what in-dash units would be good to look into? I don't mind buying the last year model, etc just as long as it has the features I need. Seems like most people lean towards Pioneer brand stuff, but I'm open to suggestions.

Im planning on getting this for the truck pretty soon

Its cheap and it also has an hdmi input for phone screen mirroring, which is pretty awesome.

Wow....Good find Evan. Let me know how that works out, would love to try that in the Subaru.

most of the screen mirroring capable headunits are half assed and it doesnt work (Appradio/Mirrorlink). I never wanted to spend on a GPS enabled HU when my phone does it. So if they can mirror Google Maps, I may be sold.

I wonder if you still have to interact with the phone when it is hooked up mirroring on the screen, or do you have complete control of the phone using the HU touch screen.

Re: Recommend me a moderately priced In-Dash - Evan - 06-03-2014

its just video input, so you still use the phone for control. I plan on hooking up a miracast receiver to the hdmi in port, so I can connect without wires.

There are android head units but they are straight from china, around $500, and sketchy/unreliable.
Give it a year and I think they will be better (especially when android car lands)

Yea...glad I didnt do App radio or the MirrorCast stuff. I have even been contemplating switching to an iPhone *GASP* just because of their aftermarket headunit support. But I just dont want to walk around with a shattered screen for 2 years.

Don't be a fuckin idiot then. I've had my 5 since it came out and it's not shattered. No case either. I just, you know, take care of my things.

I've had only iphones since I got into the smart phone thing. I've dropped all of mine a bunch with no issues whatsoever. Just get one of the smallish incipio cases and it'll be fine unless you throw it across a parking lot or something.

Re: Recommend me a moderately priced In-Dash - JustinG - 06-03-2014

Good to know. I just see more cracked iphones than I do android so....

Because Andriod Users have to replace their phones every 6 months due to them crashing and slowing down. I have cracked one of my iphones in the 3 I have had that I replace every 2 years under the upgrade. They do start slowing down about 3-6 months before the 2 year schedule though........At least they still have resale value.
I finally bought a case for my latest phone, and have dropped it a lot but no issues!

Re: Recommend me a moderately priced In-Dash - Kaan - 06-03-2014

back to the topic... the one that Evan posted seems to get pretty good reviews and is priced on the cheap side. all the other high rated double dins that meet your criteria are at least $500. crutchfield has 5 or 6 that are rated at 5 stars.

Re: Recommend me a moderately priced In-Dash - Mike - 06-03-2014

iphone user since day 1. i've run thousands of miles WITH PHONE IN HAND AND NOT IN CASE and not cracked a screen. also biked tens of thousands of miles with it in my back pocket. been through some good crashes. screen crackers are fucking dolts. car stereos are lame too.

Are there any headunits that do touchscreen input for iphone? I didnt think there were.
mirrorlink is still the best bet for that, and being an open standard, iphone doesnt support it.

Playback control is easy and any bluetooth receiver does that.

Re: Recommend me a moderately priced In-Dash - JustinG - 06-03-2014

I think appradio was the best bet and actually a good option. It just sucks for android users.
