Questions about gear - mpg9999 - 09-27-2004
I made a list of the gear I'm thinking about getting. What do you guys think?
boots:
-Alpinestars bullet. I want something that I can wear when I ride, and then walk right into class and be comfertable.
Jacket:
-First choice, Fieldsheer Moto Bar: Goatskin leather (the goat skin doesnt feel as tough as the other types of leather. Does it hold up as well? It definatly feels comfertable). It has removable CE Approved armor for the elbows, shoulders, and back. if i should get a larger size so i can fit a sweatshirt or extra armor underneath it. The girl at the motorcycle shop said I was about a 42 when I was trying things on. Im about 6' 2", maybe 3", and a little over 160 pounds. Basically tall and skinny.
-Alpinestare dyno: heard some good things about it. Havnt tried it on.
I do like the fact that it has the reflective stuff on it. Can that be added to other jackets?
-Joe Rocket alter ego textile: Thinking about as a hot weather jacket.
Extra back protection:
-I thought i might try to find some extra back protection. I kind of like the Bohn Defender back protector. Helmet:

Pants:
-Fieldsheer Titanium Air Pant: These would be for longer rides, or pretty much anytime I dont have to get off my bike and go somewhere, like work or school. -Icon Barrier Pants: These would be for times when I have to go somewhere, like sit in class. -Bohn Bodyguard Armored Pants: I also thought about getting these, but im not sure how comfertable they would be. These are basically like a spandex pants with armor in the knees, shins, and hips. I would then wear a normal

-Gloves:
AGVSport Raptor Gloves: Not to set on the gloves, but something like these. They are made from cowhide, and

i couldnt afford the nice gear but I got by..
leather gloves-Lowes welding gloves are like $15. tough but usable
back protectors- I got one for $50 delivered new on ebay
boots- big walmart OVER the ankle shit kickers
jeans- 2 pairs at a time
joe rocket armored phoenix jackets are mad cheap on ebay. theyre a summer jacket, but all the shoulder/elbow/back armor is in there.
thats great you took the initiative to get decent gear. you can walk away from some nasty crashes if you have the right stuff on

when i used to ride all crazy.... i was young and stupid and wore a tshirt and jeans... and a helmet... thank God i never got hurt doing stupid shit on a bike. now that i'm older and wiser, i got some gloves and a jacket... i dont see that much use for pants as long as you arent running around the exit ramp dropping a knee.
the MSF will give you all kinds of ideas about wearing ankle supportive shoes... well damnit running shoes count! cause its obvious i dont run in the mother fuckers. no but seriously they are comfortable and have good traction...
G- when i get a new bike... as long as you promise not to wet yourself on it... i might even let you take it out and drop it :-P rookie!

Even if you fall off your bike at 35mph, those jeans will disintigrate on contact and you're gonna get f'ed up.

My buddy fell off an ATV wearing jeans, riding on pavement at 37mph coming back from a ride. That's halfway through first gear for me. 37mph. His jeans disintegrated, leaving him with roadrash all over the ass. I went out that day and got the Fieldsheer pants I have. Haven't looked back. I've seen some jeans that have kevlar linings in the ass and knees, they might fare better, but I'm skeptical.

I'm looking for a study where they wrapped 200lbs of sand in denium and 200lbs of sand in "motorcycle" pants material... then they dropped them off the back of a pickup at 40mph.... NEITHER survived
basically they both blow... and if you think the pants will do something for you compair them to the jacket... the jacket and gloves for that matter have armor... its not some fabric that saves you, its the armor... they dont armor pants like they do jackets. RJ let me put it to you this way... its like that M00gen oil cap of yours... it works just like the stock cap... it just costs you more :-PPS i said study not a corner carvers general discousion thread... only beleive the politics over there ricer :-P

I'd have to agree on the jeans things. If you're wearing full on race leathers they'll save your ass much better than jeans obviously but I don't think you're gonna wanna suit up in your armor everytime you go for a ride.

Leathers are not pants... just like RJ said... i wouldnt put leathers on to go to the store on the bike.... RJs mom wears "textile" motorcycle pants because they are padded in the knees.... and thats the only place you get the padding/armor. just wear jeans damnit... or waste your money on stupid pants... even better... spend lots of money on the leather pants you will hate wearing

once you get out of the "i'm scared to hell but this is so cool" faze of riding to the "i love riding, i'll go anywhere on ".... your pants are the first things that go. for those of you looking at F4i's, GSXRs, god forbid the Hayabusa, the R6, and other speed happy bikes... YOU DONT HAVE A PLACE TO STORE PANTS! G, RJ, and all others i'm sure will hit the faze where at some point in the summer there is no rain and they want to ride to work.... i'm sure your offices have places for jackets and there is somewhere at your desk you can hide the helmet and gloves.... but i'm willing to bet there isnt a place to put your pants... and how would you wear your "work attire" under them? and how would you transport your work attire if they were not on? you may want pants, but you arent going to wear them when you ride up to the clubs in DC, or when you go to meet someone for dinner. if you ever plan on tracking ( :twisted: ) then you will need FULL LEATHERS... save the money for something ricey like a slip on exhaust.... :roll: or God forbid the clutch you will kill on the bike and/or the rear tire....

why couldn't you put your pants under your desk? why couldn't you pack your work pants in a backpack? why can't you wear work pants under the bike pants (some places allow jeans and shorts)?
