Glazed Clutch?? - Ken - 04-03-2014
Looking for a bit of help on this one:
So I noticed the other day, since I really don't drive all that hard (honestly), that when I go WOT at about 3-4K the revs fly up for about half a second, fall back down and then car begins to accelerate in a completely normal matter.
My thought was that if it was a slipping clutch, I'd see other symptoms. So far that's all I notice, it takes off fine, shifts normally and the revs are normal even while accelerating after the initial jump.
From what I have read it could just be a "glazed clutch". Is this an actual thing? Sorry, completely in the dark on this. If so, am I still screwed or is this something that can normalize itself after a bit? trying to unload this car soon so I really don't want to have to drop the 2K to get a new clutch. Really annoyed, I honestly never launch and I take all precautions not to milk the clutch. I have a feeling the previous owner (who had it up to about 10K, she's at 37 now) may have been a little harder on it than I.

If you glaze a clutch it happens immediately, you wouldn't feel the effects of someone doing it before.
Most likely from the sounds of it either the actual trans programming or the clutch is going. Sell it :p

ugh.
The suggestion was brought up that it could possibly be the wastegate not functioning properly? Would not be shocking, seeing as how a year ago I had that overboosting issue that eventually threw a CEL for the wastegate.

The revs wouldnt come up, and then go down if the turbo/engine etc wasn't working properly.
It could be as simple as the trans programming needs refreshed. Then again it could be worse. Since its "auto-clutch" I assume adjustment is done automatically so I would assume programming/trans/or clutch. Problem is, I can't see nor diagnose a car properly from afar. This is why mechanics hate to go "its this" when a customer calls saying its doing "this".

Sounds to me like your clutch is just starting to slip. It happens, its a heavy awd car with a good bit of power. Evo's are known to chew through them.

Yeah I think he had a ralliart before, which did have the dual clutch.

Yes, DJ, I did have the ralliart before which was the dual clutch. Don't think you ever got to see this one.
Can't put into words how much I don't want to put money into this thing. Girlfriend's dad works with a lot of dealerships so hoping he can get me a good price on OEM parts to fix this (he was able to get me a bunch of OEM fluids and such for like 80% off last time, here's to hoping he can get something good on this).
Just so I am in the know when I do eventually speak with the dealership, and I know it's hard to know exactly what is wrong without seeing it, is there any kind of "quick fix"? By that I mean, is there any way that by replacing one part I can extend the life a little longer so I can just sell it? Dickish, I know, but I really don't have this money right now. hence why I am letting her go.

If the flywheel is glazed you might be able to squeak by having it resurfaced. If the clutch is worn down, you'll need to get a clutch kit and replace it, and still probably want to have the flywheel resurfaced. I "resurfaced" the flywheel in the Miata using some emory cloth, but that put down approximately 300 less horsepower through 2 fewer wheels, not sure if it would be advisable on a big boy car.
What if you got rid of it like... this weekend? Doesn't seem like the issue is too noticeable yet, just trade it on or sell it to carmax and commandeer that GTI.

Yeah, that's definitely in the cards. Big bro is actually home this weekend, so I'm hoping he's willing to go carless for a bit... he lives in the city anyway. Although, shit, my windshield is currently cracked and closest appointment is the 16th.
I hate to say it, but on the whole, I regret this decision. I was so much happier with the Ralliart; I was able to afford this car but I wasn't able to afford the experience of this car. If that makes any sense. I could never drive all that hard without fearing the gas price repercussion. Not to say it didn't put a shit eating grin on my face almost every day but I could never really fully take advantage.
Such is life I guess.

Maybe on newer cars. I stopped by the local one to get quote on my trans am before I listed it privately. They offered 5k. Realistically its probably worth $12-14k.

I think the newer and lower mileage the car is, the more fair their offer is likely to be. If the carfax has even a small altercation on it they'll lowball the shit out of you. They only offered me $10k for my GTI because the front fender got whacked and was repaired at the dealer. The rear bumper got whacked and was repaired poorly, but because it wasn't on the carfax no one noticed that one. :roll: It's worth taking the car over there and spending 30 minutes to get a formal quote on it. I think they give you a printed offer that's good for 7 days.
And yeah, it's definitely a balancing act. I've spent SO MUCH TIME just waiting around to fix things on the BMW because I bought the GTI and did a pretty major tune up on it last year. If I had the self control and humility to daily a $2500 shitbox Honda I would've long since reached my goals on the BMW. C'est la vie.
I think the GTI would be a good move for ya. I'm sure the payment will be a fraction of what you're spending on the Evo. I'd just set the money you save aside for a few months to cover any potential issues with the DSG or motor, and then you won't have to worry about anything. I'm sure the gas and insurance costs will be much easier to swallow too.

Just realized the closest one is fairly far, see if i'll go there or just try a dealer around here.
Yeah GTI makes sense, not a huge fan of it but it will suit my needs perfectly for now. Great part is my brother had the sense to get an extended warranty

Mitsubishi clutches are dirt cheap. The labor it costs for you to pull the transmission, put in a new one. That is...if you are going to do it.

Seriously...seriously?? what? The ghetto resurfacing? The surface of the flywheel was smooth, just a little discolored. I was on a tight budget so I just scuffed it up until it all looked uniform and the clutch gripped perfectly. :dunno:
And I believe a mitsu clutch kit would not include a flywheel right? So you'd either need to buy that seperately or have it properly resurfaced right?
