Delivery Driver's in MM? - *insertusernamehere* - 03-12-2014
Anyone in MM is or was a delivery driver?
I'm gonna need another job for summer and keeping all my options open. I'm hesitant about applying cause I don't know how it'll be on my car and if i even make an amount worth it as a driver. That said, there are two drivers in the burg right now that drive e36 sedan...they look like shit.
So anyone?

I did for a while at Jimmy John's and Joey did as well.
I had my 09' Ralliart so it was a little easier to get around then Joey's lowered E36. It was a bit annoying with the turbo to try and leave the car running, especially when it was 2AM and hooligans were like, "OOOOOHHH EVVVOOOOO" and try to get in.
Going from what you wrote, I'm assuming you meant working the summer in the 'burg. If I recall correctly the guys at JJ that were there year-round bitched about when the summer was coming because it meant crap tips/deliveries. I did okay during the year though, money was enough to pay the few bills I had at the time and a little left over for some keggers.
oh, and despite the stupidity of it, I totally taxi-ed people around. Some idiots paid me $30 bucks to drive them from the Outpost to E-Hall. Wasn't turning that down.

Yeah you're not gonna make much cash in Hburg during the summer, place is a freaking ghost town. We used to make pretty good money, but at some point they got rid of a lot of the in-store-only people and hired more drivers, so we had more to do in the store earning a shitty hourly rate, and there was more competition over deliveries. I quit when I started making like $30-40/night because it just wasn't worth it.
Things might be different now, and I think Chanellos paid better than JJ, so it's worth looking into. Good way to make some money and it's kinda fun, you see a whole different picture of Harrisonburg when you drive around from 10 PM - 5 AM on a weekend night.
It is hard on your car. It's a good idea to have 2 keys so you can leave it running while making a delivery to cut down on the constant starts and stops, but lock the doors and keep drunken assholes from breaking into it and/or stealing the deliveries you haven't made yet (which you have to pay for.)
Drunken assholes are assholes and delivery drivers are easy targets. People will try to climb in your car, everyone will want to steal the food, people will threaten to steal your car and rob you, etc. I found the best response to all that bullshit was to stay calm, but not back down and look kinda pissed off. If you look shaken they'll dig into you more, if you freak out on them you'll start a fight, but if you stand your ground they tend to back off because they don't want to be the one to start shit.
You will pick up a whole lot of interesting stories if you end up doing it though. Man I saw some weird/awesome/hilarious shit.

Just a thought; be vigilant and careful as a delivery driver, and carry a weapon if your employer doesn't prohibit it. I've worked on several cases where a delivery driver was called to a vacant residence and robbed once he got there. No one has ever been killed but it has happened several times in small town Virginia where I work.

Well to build on what Ryan said, on quite a few occasions people threatened to rob me. I carried a pocket knife with me, which is far from the best self defense weapon, but figured if I ever ended up getting shot/jumped/stabbed the least I could do was try to inflict a little of my own damage on my way out. Lots of guys carried handguns, but they weren't supposed to. If I had to do it again, I'd at least carry a taser.
And just a general tip, if you're ever struck by an urge to be a shitty human being, don't take it out on a delivery driver. He's probably armed and at the end of his rope. One guy I knew was making a delivery in the winter and some drunken asshole winged a huge chunk of ice right at his face. It went right by his head and smashed on his truck. He walked over and said "Did you just throw that ice at me?" "Yeah, what the fuck are you-gckkk" He rocked him so hard in the face he broke his pinky finger.
One afternoon when I had just started a shift I picked up the phone and the guy said "If you can get my order to the Duke Dog on campus in 5 minutes I'll tip you $10." I barked his order at the guys on the line, filled up his drink, grabbed the sandwich, sprinted to the car, caught the green light across Port and had his order in his hand in 3-4 minutes. He made good on his tip too.
Once I knocked on the door at 2 or 3 in the morning, and I swear to God they must've been Swedish foreign exchange volleyball players. Two six-foot-tall blondes answered the door in t-shirts and panties. I almost forgot why I was there.
As I mentioned, people constantly threaten you for one reason or another. One time I made a delivery on campus and some shitfaced meathead freshmen were begging me for a ride back to the JJ store. I explained that I would, but it's against the rules, and if they see people getting out of my car, I'll get fired. Meathead #1, says "Well how about we just steal your car?" "Go ahead and fucking try it" I say ...driving away. I make my next delivery and go back to the store, and hey wouldn't you know, the meathead posse is hunkered over a table making a huge fucking mess. I grab the manager and explained what happened, and we kicked the little fuckers out and blacklisted them.
Another time I did a 12-hour shift on block party weekend and on my first fucking delivery some dicknose yells for his roommate to bring the money, then looks me up and down and says "What if I just fucking took the food?" "Yeah, what if you did?" Awkward staring contest ensues and roommate finally shows up with the cash. That was probably the closest I got to actually being robbed, because both of them were enormous and could've kicked the shit out of me... but it probably occurred to him that I knew where he lived.
I guess wasted people see yellow + thing on top of the car = taxi? People tried to get in the car all the fucking time, sometimes they'd actually get the door open and I'd have to literally pry their grimy drunken fingers off the car so I could drive away. Some poor bastard in Stone Gate couldn't even stand up without the car for balance, but it wasn't my problem. I just drove away and let the door close itself.
Everyone wanted a ride, and I'd usually decline because it was against the rules, but if they were paying or seemed legitimately desperate I usually would. Drove several completely shithoused freshman and sophomore girls who were lost in the middle of nowhere at 4:30 AM back to their dorms. One time I squeezed 4 freshman girls and 2 dudes into the M3 because they were wandering around Fox Hill thinking it was Forest Hills.
We used to deliver to the hospital all the time, especially the old one. JMU kids can't hold their liquor for shit. Couldn't believe the number of kids I'd see in there due to drinking or drinking related wounds.
4:00-5:00 AM in Harrisonburg was a glorious, magical time. 95% of the partiers had tapped out, all the stoplights went to flashing yellows, and I think the cops were on a shift change. That was usually our last hour for deliveries and we made Port Republic our bitch. Even if cops were out, the delivery toppers seemed to buy us a lot of wiggle room, and no one ever bothered me for slightly excessive speeding or illegal parking, especially that late.
Anyway, that's most of the stuff I can remember. Definitely an interesting job as far as part-time college gigs go, you end up feeling like a sober moderator for every situation you walk into, which is usually some hookup getting started in the stairwell at Stone Gate you know wouldn't be happening if one of them could see straight.
If you end up doing it, have your wits about you. Don't take any bullshit, but don't get yourself shot over a sandwich. If some fucknuckle actually robs you at gun point just give him the goddamn food. Also, have a friend/roommate that has a snow capable vehicle. If you're the one guy who can make deliveries in a snowstorm you'll make out like a bandit. Ken and I cashed in on that one with the Ralliart several times.

Yeah you get stiffed all the time delivering in Harrisonburg. Which is fine, until the drivers start to remember your house number and make you the last stop on a run of 6 deliveries.
I also was successfully ripped off a few times. Some people at least acted like they didn't know they didn't have enough, others would blatantly order food they knew they couldn't pay for. People would open the door, shove some cash in your hand and slam it shut, and you look down to see $4 for a $12 order.

Lol, that was the best. I remember they were trying to tell us that they were going to stop deliveries to stonegate because of the massive hills. I was like: motherfucker, I got this.
I never really had a problem with people trying to steal from me, maybe because if anyone suggested it I just kinda laughed and kept walking. Less time you spend talking with them, the better.
One thing I did learn is that just because a girl sounds hot on the phone does not mean she is.
Also, I can't even count how many times I drove back with the freaking topper. Or the amount of times I was offered a beer and/or hit when delivering.

The guys in the dorm room next to me my freshman year in Colorado were those dicks you are talking about. They used to get super stoned in their room and camp out at the window until a pizza delivery guy would show up. Then they would run down and grab all of the Heat Wave bags out of the back of his car with all of the pizzas. They had a stack of those bags floor to ceiling in their dorm room and would have like 8-10 pizzas in there at a time. Such a dick move!

I don't think I ever drove home with the topper. I always got offered a beer or a hit instead of a tip. I'm like what the fuck am I supposed to do, drive around town knocking back a Keystone with a JJ topper on my car? What could possibly go wrong?!

You remember the knock routine? Whenever a hot girl walked into the store someone would knock on the counter and everyone working would look up. It had to be about as subtle as the Third Reich invading Poland.

All I'm saying is the almost NO college kids eat at Cracker Barrel. Last Wednesday, I served for 4 hours and made $60, but that's at the store in Lynchburg which is MUCH busier.
Still, if there's a place to serve in Harrisonburg. That's it.

The key to winning at working when you are in college is to work during the summer and breaks when everyone else is just getting wasted at home with their loser townie friends. I worked in real estate as a temp in college. When everyone else was going on spring breaks and to the beach I was working 50+ hours a week gaining experience and contacts that ultimately got me a good job in the industry when I graduated. I had plenty of beer money and paid for my old WRX / insurance while I was in school and I didn't have to work when school was in session. If you can dig up a white collar college job like that I highly recommend it. There's certainly nothing wrong with bartending or serving or delivering food to make ends meet but you're probably not doing yourself any favors to help you get a job after you graduate.
