I finally popped my new car cherry today, unfortunately it was out of necessity and not driven by desire. Allow me to back up, the preceding months have offered an abundance of "opportunity" for me to learn about basic old school mechanics, the down side was I was getting this education while trying to daily the car.
after some lovely conversations with my better half the common themes of "reliable" and "safe for children to ride in" kept coming out. We decided to look for a small run-around/commuter car to maybe lease for 2 years then figure out what to do after that. fine print on leases were dumb, and the used car market seemed insanely high, so new it was.
Bought a 2013 Honda Fit. It had a few things going for it over the others in the segment, but mainly the 2015 was coming down so I was hoping dealers would be motivated. I decided the base model would be fine, and three pedals seemed abundant still. emailed every dealer from Richmond to nova with what i was looking for earlier in the week and got some decent out the door prices. msrp is $16,250, and in VA i guess they can bend you over with a 'processing fee' which was $200-500 depending on the dealer. By the time taxes and everything were done, I walked out of Harrisonburg Honda for 15 flat. I went in with financing from my CU at 1.74%/60, but honda had 0.9% for 60 and 1.9% for 72 months. it was like even freer money.
Over all, pretty good first time experience, I did start to tear up a bit right after, but it was just so emotional, ya know?
And since I'm sure you don't spend time reading up on Fit specs, allow me to leave you with some of it's amazing offerings.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but didn't you buy a beater Chevy truck at one point? Whatever happened to it?

yeah, had the truck but after a coupla hundred miles water was getting in the oil. there was all kinds of crap in the coolant so we're pretty sure something was dumped in there to mask it long enough for the guy to sell it. father in law bought it from me and took it back to NY, where he had another 350 he put in. he was using it as a plow truck but will probably sell it in the spring.
had the truck worked out, my original plan woulda been flawless

Nice! The Fit is a really fun car to throw around. I know I beat up the suggestion in Ryan's thread, simply because of the staggering highway miles he wants to put on the car. For an in-town runabout with some occasional highway use, I think you'll like it quite a bit.
Which new, exciting exterior color did you choose?!

No worries Jake, after putting 7 miles on it tonight coming home I wouldn't recommend it to someone doing a hundred and twenty miles a day either...

Oh, and I went with EXCITING BLACK! it was a toss up between that and white, but I already had a pen of black touchup paint, so it was the obvious choice.

Great choice. I had a 2011 Fit (from Harrisonburg Honda too), really enjoyed it. I thought it was hands-down the best bang-for-the-buck in that segment.

+1 a friend had one in college that was manual. Was a hoot for what it was.

i think i have a problem...it wasn't 2 hours in my garage before i was on a Fit Forum looking at mods. WTF?!? it's a commuter car! why would i even entertain a thought like that? although an extra 12HP from the Red JDM badges would be useful in highway merging...
oh, and yeah, there are SO MANY CUPHOLDERS! Germans could learn a thing or two from it.
