Bimmer dashboard lights help - missmotocross3 - 01-26-2014

Hi! So for the third time this week my Bimmer's dashboard lit up like a christmas tree half way through my drive. After an hour of driving on 81 the DSC light came on and the BRAKE light comes on. I turn the car off and it goes away. Then it comes back in an hour. 81 was bone dry. Not sure what the problem could be. I have a 2001 325i. Advice??? :dunno:

Check the brake fluid level and make sure it's at the Max line.

Past that, you may have a dirty or broken wheel speed sensor, or the DSC module under the hood could be going bad. Given how nasty the weather has been, I would probably guess the wheel speed sensor. You'll have to jack it up and remove the wheels to get at the sensors (one on each corner I believe) but they can be cleaned.

There are a ton of things in that system it could be, although it seems like it usually ends up being one of the wheel speed sensors. The E38/9 4.4Ls are the only ones I know of that really eat the module because they installed it 4" above the exhaust manifold.

Check the brake fluid level and your tire pressure, you might be able to see if the wheel speed sensors are working by trying to use the cruise when the lights come on. If those don't work, go get the codes read and see if it's stored anything permanent to save you from trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Be careful adding the brake fluid though, if your pads are worn and you fill it all the way up, you'll overfill it when you reset the pistons.
