Project 2010 Ford Edge - Steve85 - 12-30-2013
Went to Buffalo on Friday to pick this up:

I really like the way it drives and handles except for brake feel (more on that later), quick enough and feels very solid and planted for a CUV. I was able to push as hard as I’d want to on the ride home through the mountains of central PA. The current family hauler is a Camry and I think we all know the story there in terms of attempting to change direction. This is a nice change.
I was also shopping the Acura RDX and Justin was kind enough to check one out for me in Richmond. Then I got in the shower where I do most of my rational thinking...and the thoughts of premium fuel, pretty poor observed mileage by owners, a turbo engine used only in that car and decided to go more mainstream. I wanted to grab ‘an 11+ model for the updated interior and drivetrain but they just weren’t coming down fast enough.
I had very specific requirements, including nav, as much for the touchscreen interface with the BT and media controls as the actual nav, light interior seating but with dark panels, dash and wheel to avoid a sea of beige, “limited” trim, body color mirrors/handles and not black, silver, gray or frickin creme brule on the outside. This one popped into my budget as an end of year special down about $3K from original list 3 months ago. Carfax showed it was a local car and traded in at the selling dealer.

The newer versions are certainly nicer inside overall, but something about big, easy to hit controls especially with ski gloves on was appealing. Also like the extra area below the HVAC controls to put phone, wallet, etc.

One thing I don’t like is the very long brake pedal travel. It was that way on the two I drove so I assumed normal but research is giving me some conflicted info. I mean, long travel means different things to different people, but halfway down is excessive in my book.
Planned mods:
- Heavy duty mats. We went skiing Saturday and parking lots for that are generally gravel and messy. And until I get a rack, dirty equipment is riding in the cargo area. I want to be able to throw muddy cleats, fishing poles, and what ever else back there without ruining the carpet.
- Roof or trailer hitch rack. Leaning towards trailer hitch for ease of access. Thule makes a nice swing away 4 bike holder but I want to keep looking for something that might be convertible to ski/board carrier.
- Projector headlights with black housing.
- Paint grille black or deep gray, leaning gray. Plasti-dip to the rescue
- Black out chrome trim under the windows. Plasti-dip to the rescue
- Wheels - Chrome snowflakes are not working for me. They are 20" on this model (Sport model has 22s) which is plenty big enough. Tires are brandy new Pirelli Scorpion so no tires needed. Suggestions? Will go with a gray be it gunmetal, titanium, or whatever.
- H&R Springs to lower 1.5"
- Paint lower rocker trim body color
Pretty much in that order too I guess.

Very nice, I like the color combo. One of my old managers at AOL has had a blue 2011 since new or nearly new and has been really happy with it. They have the funniest little exhaust note for an SUV, it sounds like a speaker underneath the rear seat quietly playing race car sounds.

I have a set of Yakima FatCat6 ski carriers if you are interested. Used only a couple of times, comes with locks. Ski gear definitely makes a mess.

Looks good, Steve! The pre-MyFord Touch infotainment system is actually not all bad. I might like it more than MFT, actually. Do you know if you have updated maps for the navigation system?
I approve of new wheels, never liked those snowflake-esque ones at all. For reference, Ford uses funky bolt patterns but yours is a more common 5x114.3 with a 70.5mm hub bore. You cannot use wheels from a newer Edge (the 2011+ redesign) because their hub bore is smaller. I think you have a pretty wide-open choice of OEM wheels that will fit. I might look at Explorer wheels, they had some attractive designs. Or if you want to get wild, get a set of Mustang GT wheels for it

The color combo is exactly what I was looking for and it drove my wife crazy. Told her it was this or Blazing Copper (Orange).
It seems to have treated the previous owner well, it has 100K on it. Which means it was driven the way we'll drive it, and as long as I don't f' with it, I expect good things. Kind of crazy to buy a car with that many miles already I guess, but I just don't think miles mean what they used too. We'll see...

Looks like a nice rack at a good price but it needs cross bars and I don't have them.I'll see what I end up doing, one idea was to get a set of universal cross bars then go from there. The cross bars would open up more possibilities in terms of additional storage, can carry kayaks, etc. (we usually rent on site, but that limits where and when you can go, we have an open invitation to borrow friends so would be nice to take them camping)

Ooh, I like the orange. But the red is pretty sweet... I'd be happy with either.
100k on an '09? Probably highway driving, so at least it wasn't abused or driven 3 miles at a time with no fluids ever warming up. You could get another 100k out of it, easily.
Are you still commuting in the 'Teg or retiring it in favor of the Edge? And what happens to ol' faithful, anyway? Track toy?! :thumbup:

I would have been fine the the orange too, had a couple in my saved box.
That's what I'm thinking in terms of the mileage, you don't put 100K on a vehicle in that time taking the whole family to the grocery store and back. It doesn't even look like anyone ever sat in the other seats!
Commuting the Edge. Taking a mileage hit but it's mitigated by WFH 2-3 days now. I think ol faithful will need to go. I've been thinking about selling the vette (I've been talking to someone off and on so I'll see where that goes) and doing some light prep on the teg but I need to be realistic about how often I can get out there anyway.

Parts ordered from the eBay, total cost $119. Also have the inner fender trim piece but still need the lower valance. Just needed to fix the fog light for inspection and will tackle the rest later. Going to have the new lower valance painted body color before I install it.

I really like this thing. The infotainment is very user friendly. My only pet peeve is that it cues whatever I was playing last on the phone to automatically start even if I have it on "Radio" and not the "Media" selection. I end up losing my place on my podcasts while getting the traffic info as I start the commute. it's. just. terrible. :wink:
Found the ambient lighting which can be changed to 7 different colors, that's important.
Size is good, just enough cargo area for us to pack up and go skiing every weekend which includes bringing the weekend jobs with us (laundry, food for cooking, etc.).
Still beating my head against the wall on what style rack(s) to go with. I guess I really just hate how expensive it can get to be able to carry snowboard/skis, bikes, occasional extra cargo, and anything that can be used in water.

I hit two with the Integra and both times just paid the deductible and there was no increase in the rate as a result. Actually, second deer spun onto the side of the car and put REALLY minimal dings in the rocker area and we traded the deductible for not getting those fixed. (can't remember the technical term)

I've been relatively lucky each time that they've been mostly glancing blows. I've seen a lot of other cars along 50 really get messed up.

I probably didn't check the underside as well as I should have but nothing stands out from what I have seen. I'll get a better look when I change the oil soon. Under the hood is clean with very minimal surface rust on a few minor brackets.
Forgot I also put a battery in it a few weeks ago. We were loading up on a Friday night so doors and tailgate were open for an extended time and the lights stayed on until I hit the starter and got clickity-click with no vroom-vroom. Jumped it, stopped at Autozone on the way and we were off! It was a Motorcraft battery so possibly the original.
