Ferrari F40 Massive Correctional Detail-Part 2 - premiershine9 - 09-30-2013

I exceeded the 60k character limit

Continue from here until the end

Paint Correction

The Focus of the corrective side of this project was to safely correct as much of the paint defects as possible- remember, this particular 40 has never been corrected or detailed in the past- lucky for me. The ability to see the carbon kevlar weave through the single stage paint can be frightening- we also must remember that a professional can remove clear/ single stage paint BUT we can't put it back on.... given the thin layer of clear aiming for 90-100% correction on the entire body is dangerous- aiming below that and taking less aggressive steps is a much more wise way of thinking as the paint on this F40 will undoublty need to be corrected in the future- take off less now- leave more to play with later.

Correction was done with nearly every polish/ pad combo/ machine in my arsenal, ultimately my PC and Rupes 21 were utilized for a majority of the correction- the PC backing plate of course being changed multiple times for various size pads. I also went through nearly 4 rolls of tape- every edge was taped, moved, taped again etc. For instance:

Originally sprayed with Glasurit FER 300/12 Rosso Red the paint was on the medium side but in some areas was on the harder side.

Others will start out with M105, M101, S3 or a compound and then a following finishing step, but in my opinion, why gouge first and then finish down when you can utilize a great single step medium polish that finishes down rather well and simply make 1-2 passes with it, instead of gouge and finish, why not gently scrape away slowly- M101 was utilized in a few areas however for the most part Sonax PF on orange/ green foam pads was utilized.

Befores and 50/50's
Wheels bagged and ready to start taping
[Image: IMG_1289_zpsfded561d.jpg]
Again, loads and loads of tape balls by the end of this correctional
[Image: IMG_1298_zps80c6ebba.jpg]
Knife touching the surface for the first time
[Image: IMG_1301_zps9939e889.jpg]
Wipedown with SH formula showed some nice results after one pass
[Image: IMG_1308_zps0032b417.jpg]
After this I knew that each panel was going to be different and require different passes, combos etc. In sum, this project was done panel by panel, one area at a time

Hood:
Something obviously was in someones towel when wiping laterally

After one pass- speed 4.5 to 5, 55-70% on average achieved with one pass
[Image: IMG_1344_zps28c65aaa.jpg]
See the split difference?
One more gentle pass yielded near 90 percent on average- RIDS still remained here an there which were harder to capture

Much, much, much better [Image: DSC07621_zps9e33f671.jpg]

Just simply tons and tons of fine, fine swirling

Inner doors- all corrected as well- hand polished as well in some areas

Area between the body and rear bonnet also corrected
[Image: DSC07659_zpsffe103de.jpg]

Lots and lots and lots of hand polishing
[Image: DSC07679_zps6f5a86c6.jpg]

Looking good so far

Can't forget the bottom and inside portions

Area between the lexan window and vented rear portion
[Image: DSC07701_zps36dd600b.jpg]

Pillars
[Image: DSC07706_zps2577b95e.jpg]

Lexan Rear window- much needed attention
The lexan was tackled with a Menz Power Finish/ Super Finish combo on green/ finishing foam with low speeds, needless to say, this was a hassle but well worth the long hours

Scuffs, marring, swirling, etc. etc the lexan rear window had it all- not only was the top side in need of a multi step prescription but one cannot forget the underside must also be corrected as well- meaning a few more hours laying underneath the engine bonnet on the back
[Image: DSC07662_zpsa9a8cd36.jpg]

Much clearer- left vs. right (before finishing)

Notice the 50/50 split left vs. right
[Image: DSC07666_zps5c71da81.jpg]

Much better
[Image: DSC07759_zps13f181ec.jpg]

Side Lexan windows- even trickier.
The fuel filler cap is right adjacent to the side windows- stains present which were removed
[Image: DSC07628_zpsb9f06c8c.jpg]
Getting these two side windows near perfect was much more difficult than the rear, as anything with this project any improvement near 50% while keeping originality was sufficient

Dude what all cars does this guy have?! I think I saw a Maserati peaking in one, a Lambo, and a 458?

Dan Kastner, you are an exceptional human being. These two threads are filled with so much awesome, it's an overload.

The client is Peter Regna, owner of ATL fuel cells- incredible man and now my good friend. He's the same individual who let me pilot his F430 up to Monticello Motor Club.

From what I know/ seen this is his stable:
1/1 vintage Lotus F1 car
Countach
Diablo
Murcielago Roadster
F430
458
F40
Bentley Mullsane
Bentley Arnage
.....2 or 3 other Bentleys
Multiple RR's

Chances are if you go to any Nascar, ALMS, Grand-am, Trans-am, Ferrari Challenge etc. all the fuel cells/ fuel filler/ storage canisters are his..... not to mention every drone plane in the sky has an ATL fuel cell.

I have a lot of stories I could tell you so far from my time hangin with him but i'd rather not put it on the internet LOL

Re: Ferrari F40 Massive Correctional Detail-Part 2 - davej - 10-01-2013

man, if it wasn't an F40 i'd swear you swapped cars out for a different one. stunning work, as usual.

also, it kinda looks like an oversized RC car when you stand next to it.

Re: Ferrari F40 Massive Correctional Detail-Part 2 - Goodspeed - 10-01-2013

Just incredible. Insane quality of work, and it was so worth it - my jaw dropped at the finished photos. And, I think my heart made its way up into my throat at the part where you had to spray the rear grille on the car, but it came out awesomely.

Do you/he mind if this writeup is posted on other forums? Errbody loves the F40 and they should see this.

Re: Ferrari F40 Massive Correctional Detail-Part 2 - ScottyB - 10-01-2013

the thought of spray painting an F40 would literally keep me up at night, sweating in fear. i can't believe how well you made the paintwork come together.

i want to say i'm amazed at the result, but i'm not. its always the same incredible transformation....so nice work doing what you do, Lord of The Orbital.

It's. not. a. big. car. at. all. Surprisingly small believe it or not, i barely could fit in the drivers/ passenger seat, it literally is no bigger than a 360 or an F430 really

Seriously, you spraybombed an F40 ( ), that says a lot about the owners confidence in you.

Just amazing work and results on one of the most iconic cars of all time. I'm equally impressed with the level of research done before you even touched it.

hahah the car was NOT allowed to leave the home and believe it or not the owner DID NOT want the rear grille removed- roughly 40 rivets hold the grille in- so pop/ drill all the rivets on a 47k piece of carbon kevlar, remove it, sandblast, respray, reinstall- BUT the owner didn't want to pay for it- the last year and a half was rough....lots of efforts, little buding and lots of strong minded opinion- only option was to spray it on the grille...... o well.

thanks for the praise though man! I had to research...a bad day on an F40 is a BAD day if something went wrong

Re: Ferrari F40 Massive Correctional Detail-Part 2 - WRXtranceformed - 10-02-2013

Absolutely incredible, you have a serious gift and attention to detail that I can really appreciate. There are so many people who try to do what you do and don't even come close.

I WILL figure out a way to get the XFR up to you for a pre-winter detail I do not care what it takes. I don't feel like I could trust anyone else to detail my car after seeing what you are capable of dude!

Seriously - would you ever consider FedEx'ing yourself a bunch of supplies and taking a ticket to fly out to a customer? Do detailers even do that?

A few comments from another board I shared your writeup on:

Quote:Absolutely stunning. Read the in detail post, simply amazing.

Quote:Flawless work especially the lexan rear hatch cover.

I get it, I was just having fun with the "characterization", more prep went into that grille refurbish than most full paint jobs  Serious on the trust comment of course.
