What am I getting into with buying a second car? - Senor_Taylor - 09-25-2013 Hey guys! I drive a truck and love it with all my heart, but the car guy in me has been begging for a car. I think I found the "one". It's a 94 Celica GT that needs a rebuilt motor. The guy says he has all the parts and he's dumping it all for 450 doll hairs. What a steal, right? I'm going to look at it today, probably. Now, I don't have a lot of money. As of right now, I don't even have the $450, but I plan on hitting those shifts hard at work to get the money in the next month or two if he'll hold it. Being a freshmen, I'm still under the wing of my loving mother, so I'll have to somehow convince her not to hate me for buying this. That's why I'm here asking what I should be looking at by doing this. I don't plan on putting insurance on it until it's on the road, so I don't have to worry about that, but what else does owning two cars entail? Also, where is a good place to keep a second car? I live on campus, so this is probably a hopeless thing. If worse comes to worse, I'll haul it back home. I'll need to get a tow hitch and a car dolly too... Okay, this is adding up rather quickly... Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - CaptainHenreh - 09-25-2013 NO! BAD TAYLOR! NO BISCUIT! Unless he's paying YOU to take a 94 Celica GT off his hands, this is a terrible, awful, no fucking good idea. TRUST ME I HAVE BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT. I HAVE ALREADY BLED THIS BLOOD, LET MY PAIN GUIDE YOU TO THE LIGHT, MY SON. Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - Senor_Taylor - 09-25-2013 Why's that? I know this is risky, but If I can get him to hold it for a month or two (hopeful, I know), I can start serving at work and get the money and a nice cushion after that. I'm only low on money because I took a few weeks off work when I moved in. I know I'm being stupid in this regard, but other than that, is there anything I should worry about? Say I put liability insurance on it, what other things to pay for am I looking at? Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - WRXtranceformed - 09-25-2013 The "needs a rebuilt motor" part is what would worry me. Who knows what else you will need to throw into that car, and paying for something you can't even drive is going to get old quick. I think almost every one of us on this forum has first hand experience. If it was me and I had to have a second car, I would wait until you have enough saved up to buy a car that actually runs reliably. You will love yourself a lot more for making that decision, trust me. Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - Senor_Taylor - 09-25-2013 Haha, alright, guys, you may have talked some sense into me. I'm still going to go look at it, because I told him I would I just realized he says it's turbo'd. Gt's never came factory with a turbo. Possible cause of the need of a rebuild? Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - *insertusernamehere* - 09-25-2013 Do you particularly like Celicas? They're kind of boring imo. The effort may not be worth it. Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - Senor_Taylor - 09-25-2013 I've driven a Celica before and I know I fit well in them. It's just the fact that it's car I have experience with, so I'm not jumping into unfamiliar territory. Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - Maengelito - 09-25-2013 This sounds like a really bad idea. He says he's got all the parts but they're either really crappy or he doesn't have all the parts. I don't trust anyone when it comes to this sort of thing so I'm leaning towards he doesn't have all the parts. Also, who knows what else is wrong with this thing. There will be plenty of opportunities to make bad decisions for $450. Don't jump on this one right off the bat. Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - Senor_Taylor - 09-25-2013 Thanks for bringing me to my senses, guys. I'll keep looking! Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - *insertusernamehere* - 09-25-2013 As for parking, Anthony i think (the guy with the blue kia coupe) had his car in an off campus storage/garage place last year. You can ask him. Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - Mike - 09-25-2013 Don't buy things when you have no money. That's a surefire way to get less money. When you have enough caaaysh to make an acceptable "RJ <3's COCK" picture, you may then start LOOKING. And when you do have $450, take your girl out for a nice dinner and dont stress about $450 cars that will cost you 4 times that in the long run. Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - RawrImAMonster - 09-25-2013 Don't do it. Only time I've lost money on a car is when I bought an LT1 firebird in non running condition. According to last owner, he saw white smoke, shut the car down and had it towed home. This normally wouldn't cause a ton of damage. Replace the head gasket and you're good to go right? Well, we did that and then the car ran fine for about 5 minutes, then started making a terrible noise. Turns out he had ran it for a while knowing it had a bad head gasket. Coolant got mixed in with the oil and ate up basically all the bearings in the motor, plus the cam (and possibly crank, can't remember). Oh, and it had a bad Opti-spark (~$500 distributor). In short, don't buy cars with non-running motors with the plan to rebuild them. If you have a motor you know that works you that you can swap in, that's not too big of a deal usually. Otherwise, don't do it. Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - Jake - 09-25-2013 Click on the "1987 BMW 325" link in my signature for one of the worst tales of how to waste your money, ever. And that one ran, sort of, when I bought it. Keep the Tacoma, save your cash between now and summertime, and if you really want something sportier, sell the Taco and spend $5-7k on a quality, cared-for car that won't bankrupt you before you even bring it home. The two-cars game gets expensive, quickly. And that one ran, sort of, when I bought it. That's the thing, I can never have just one car and NOT have my truck. I'm keeping this thing until it dies. It's my baby. Hell, if I sold this, I could get anything I wanted ($14,000 KBB value), but I won't and I can't. I told the guy that I wasn't come by after he got an attitude with me. The guy didn't know what he was talking about. He was trying to tell me that a 2.2 liter Turbo came stock in it... Re: What am I getting into with buying a second car? - CaptainHenreh - 09-25-2013 Senor_Taylor Wrote:that a 2.2 liter Turbo came stock in it... Yeah, um, he's full of it. All-Trac ST205's came with a 3S-GTE (a 2.0 turbo) all 'round the world. But we never got it. Run far away from this car, don't look back. edit: if you really really want a celica, take your time and search for a really really nice ST185 All-Trac. Even if it didn't run, I'd be real tempted to buy one of those. Rare, cool, and fairly reliable, all things considered. Ahh toyota, back when they used to make cool stuff. |
