FS: 1998 Ford Ranger - 4x4, 4.0 V6, 5-Speed - Jake - 09-03-2013

If anyone remembers the '98 Ranger I borrowed for a month in-between my 325i and Focus, it's up for sale now. My friend Mike bought this a few years ago and has driven it sparingly. It was used to drive up mountain trails to get to radio antenna locations for his job. He alternated using this and an XJ Cherokee. Now, he's living in DC proper and owning two cars, plus a company car, is too difficult.

It looks like this:

Specs:
1998 Ranger XLT
4x4
4.0L V6, with hrmph HP and step-the-ass-out-in-the-rain torque.
5-speed manual trans
Single-cab. You can store a laptop behind the front seats, that's about it.
Has a tow hitch on the back, not sure if factory Ford bits or not.

It's got manual locks, hand-crank windows. Has cruise control that works. Mike installed some Pioneer head unit that has front USB and aux inputs, and HD radio. Speakers are stock (it has 4) and I think I blew one of them out back in December, probably jamming to Miley Cyrus.

The paint is mostly shiny. The hood looks like ass. Lots of rock chips that were poorly touched up a long time ago. I dunno, it's a truck, it's not supposed to be too pretty.

Mike says it needs an upper control arm to pass inspection but is otherwise stout. I think he put tires on it right before I borrowed it.

Asking $3k OBO. Send me offers. It's a good little truck if you need one.

Edit: More pix from Mike, the current owner:

Since you didn't post the mileage I'll offer your friend 1500 doll-hairs.

would buy if 4-cyl Sad

The 4 cylinder nets you 2mpg and you are losing almost 100lb/ft to the 4.0 liter You're probably trolling anyway, but every 4 cylinder truck I've driven, including Chevy, Ford, and Toyota, have done a terrible job at getting out of their own way. Forget hauling or towing anything.

please, i troll better than that.

had no idea the 4 was so marginally more efficient than the 6.

towing is not a priority. just want something cheap, efficient, and with a bed.

This would do it for ya. The 4's are not much more efficient because they have to drag so much weight around anyway. I drove this truck for a month -- commuting in NoVA traffic, I think it was getting about 21-22 mpg, and pure highway driving (took it to the Cobetto's house in Richmond once) got it up to 24 or so.

Updated OP with more photos, too.

my wife had an explorer with the same Cologne V6 for years and years - its not going to light your pants on fire but they are rock solid, understressed engines. we got 25mpg out of a tank one time going from GA to VA.

except it is on the wrong coast. paying $1200 to transport a $3000 vehicle isn't the smartest move ever Tongue
