92 Civic CX - POS Track Car - navin - 05-02-2013

Intro
=====

Hello, my name is Navin and I'm a Honda fanboi. Figured I'd finally put up a project thread for this POS - Not really a build anymore since I'm pretty happy with where the car is at this point so I'll just be using this to keep track of changes/track weekend recaps. Who am I kidding since I'm sure I'll find more stuff that I want to replace down the road, but no major changes and taking hiatus' from the track.

Ended up selling the 5-lug, and buying back the red civic from insurance. Found this gem (no bone stock pictures) from Al (some might know him on here). Car was technically one owner, his father and then given to him. It had something like 80k orignal miles, and no rust -- oh yeah, and cheap.

Picture is the car at the first autocross I took it to, CDC @ Osbourne Park

Then decided to track it, probably one of my first events. Way back, when .RJ had his racekaa and Andy Lee and b00bies were stil tracking. I spy Pete's car in the picture as well.

Went back to Shenandoah....drank too many beers. This was the result of an alignment being all out of whack and making the car super loose the whole day. Scurry stuff especially with how close the walls were. Track-day fail

HyperHizzyFest 2009 -- blue K1's. Somehow missing a corner light, and not pictured is the hole in the driver side skirt when I ran over a jackstand in the paddock. Still not fixed..

My own garage.. Should have just power washed the bay to clean off all the crap from HyperFest but...I got carried away.

Adios motor -- at this time the 4.9 FD + LSD was installed.

Painted the engine-bay 'battle-ship' grey, or... New Ford Gray from Duplicolor... Less learned, paint work needs more prep work than you think.

Moving Forward
============

Keep driving it at events this year, my hope is to do the following events:

HyperFest
July VIR
August Summit
Mid-Ohio for ITRExpo
October VIR + The days after for NSXPO

Some short-term mods I'd like to find are some weight saving goods such as a CF Hood, possibly switch to a lightweight battery (donate old one to ITR).

Long term: Sell jdm bling suspension and switch over to Koni Race + custom rate Ground Controls. Possibly sell the AP rollbar and get a welded in 4pt.

I haven't got the chance yet to check them out, but I don't think any surprises will come up. Brakes felt great, but I think that was due to the Cobalt XR2's. Overshot the T1 brake point (for me) and then had to get on the brakes hard and the car still had plenty of bite left. Now time to stop being a wuss.

Re: 92 Civic CX - POS Track Car - navin - 05-18-2013

Welp, had to make sure that the new wheels (15*8) fit without rubbing. When mounted on the car on jackstands it seemed that it would slightly rub the RTA. No problem for the angle grinder, took off a bit of material to let it clear, but in hindsight I think the rear camber would have solved it anyways. :x

Oh yeah, I had to do some ricey shit while I was working on it too...

So now I gotta do some actual prep work..

- Oil Change (Rotella T6), as well as catch the old oil and send it out for analysis for shits and giggles.
- Trans Fluid Flush (Torco MTF -- kind of want to try RTF because the shifting has been notchy)
- Magnetic Drain Plugs (because why not)
- Maybe get bumper painted (Friend is willing to do it cheap, and the pictures above make me want to do it now)

And, that's about it. Easy track preps FTW.

Re: 92 Civic CX - POS Track Car - navin - 06-17-2013

HyperFest 2013 - 100 miles logged on track *i think i reset the odometer*

And lesson learned...I need to not bojangle and be thorough with getting the car ready for weekends. Before I go on and start to ramble, huge thanks for Justin, Kaan, DJ and others who helped out with getting the car fixed.

Decided to do the Open Practice day on Friday because some Type-aAAAR friends were coming down for it. The day started to go downhill at the tech shed where Justin thought he smelled fuel from the engine bay. Turns out the hose from the FPR to return line had deteriorated over time and I believe we found some small pin holes in it. I guess time just took its toll on it because it isn't very high pressure or anything. Was unable to find fuel hose in the paddock so I had to head into Winchester Autozone to pick some up. By the time I came back, I had missed the first session of the day.. danG!

2nd session, good to go and my first time in the pass anywhere with a point by group. The Corvette instructor guys basically all were in the group and just rolling house in the group, but it was fun none the less. Car problems reared it's ugly head again this session when I noticed some smoke billowing into the cabin, at first I thought it was fuel but we double checked the new hose for leaks and there was no smell. Pitted in and opened the engine bay to find it sprayed with some sort of fluid, and was luckily able to spot it was mainly coming from the axle/trans area. Stupid me didn't put the VSS (Vechile Speed Sensor), which us Honda guys use to fill the trans with MTF -- twisted it in and prayed it would not leak (also consulted some of the HC guys and they said it would be ok).

3rd session my nerves were a bit calmer, and decided to head out late to avoid the vette guys. Was able to catch up with a Spec-3 car, and some of the ITR's and that was pretty fun.

Other than that the rest of the weekend went pretty well minus a minor moneyshift into 2nd instead of 4th -- might actually pop the valve cover/plugs off and see if I can spot anything. The oil will be getting sent to Blackstone this time around since I forgot to send it off, and maybe the magnetic plug will do its job and pick up any bits and pieces.

Anyways -- good weekend, always a blast at HyperFest. Thanks to everyone who helped me out, and of course introduced my friend Ivan to the "Go-Fast-Crack-Pipe

Till next time suckas..

Say hello to my little friend..

Deka ETX-14 battery (12 lbs) -- about a 15 lb reduction from the stock battery (that I donated to the Hype-R).. Deka is basically the same thing as Braille batteries, which are about 2x more expensive.

Re: 92 Civic CX - POS Track Car - navin - 08-21-2013

I broke it... car made it exactly 2 sessions before the clutch (almost 99.5% positive) went out. Ah well, now to find the motivation to drop the trans and get it ready for VIR.
