Is there any good driving routes between JMU and philly, I wouldn't mind making the drive home for break kind of interesting

Don't know how far it will take you, but Skyline Drive is a pretty good run. Not sure if it will be closed for the winter though.

I'm not real sure about north of DC, but assuming you would generally take 81 to 66 you could take 11 to 211 instead. Its only about 20 minutes longer and a lot more interesting; I used to go that way on the bike.

If you go straight east on port republic til you get to 340, it goes north parallel to 81. It's a nice road, interesting scenery, a lot more mountains.
