Im saying it right now -- All the diesel fanboys who swore up and down that you would buy one are going to complain about the cost, not buy one and mumble about buying one later used. Sales will be slow and mazda will pull the engine in a couple years.

on the internet Im the minority in that I give diesel a big "meh"

higher cost of the vehicle and higher cost of fuel can make the cost savings not much or a wash. And you still have to deal with lower fuel availability.

And lets not forget that just because it has 310 ft lb doesnt mean it drives like a gasser with 310 ft lb. Diesel engines dont rev and arent nearly as satisfying to drive IMO.

If it were a wagon it'd be a no-foolin' replacement for the OBS.

As it stands...well, I'll seriously consider it, pending fuel economy numbers. Gonna need at least 40 em pee gees.

Except who wants a Mazda 6?

and if it were a wagon, you (collective internet diesel fanboys) would say "if it only it had awd id put my money down right now"

and if it were an awd diesel wagon you (collectively) would say "if only it was a 6 speed then mazda take my money"

and if it were an awd diesel wagon 6 speed, you (collectively) would say "it should be under 20k, its too expensive, ill wait to buy used"

:bootyshake: the internet

Re: Diesel fanboys: time to put up or shut up - SlimKlim - 11-28-2012

I'm a card carrying internet diesel fanboi and I think this is cool as shit. However, I am poor, and have never promised to buy a new diesel that comes to the states, so :bootyshake: yourself.

If by some freakish stroke of luck I'm offered about $20k/yr more than I expect when I convert from contract to salary, I'm going to seriously consider buying a Merc W211 E320/E350 Bluetec. Otherwise I'll buy a sub-$10k gasser as my next daily driver, and then in a couple years look into the Merc Bluetec or the new BMW F30 single-turbo 4-cylinder diesel that we're supposed to start getting here soon, or maybe just a newer VW TDI.

You're definitely right about the increased cost of the car and fuel mitigating a lot of what you can save, but I think a well-chosen used car helps with the increased cost thing, and a diesel is the perfect drivetrain for a daily driver. It produces gobs of torque so you can always get moving without having to wind it out, and its easy to keep your foot out of the throttle and maintain a high mpg average because of all that torque. Definitely wouldn't want one as my only car, but they are the ideal commuter IMO.

Put up or shut up? Got a deposit down on a diesel truck myself that I pick up this friday. Wink

I am all for more options. In fact if bmw comes out with a smaller diesel that doesnt require DEF, ill be coercing my mom into that and to get rid of the e46 m3 (that only gets 3mpg better around town than my yukon with a 6.0L).

I just cant see myself in the next 5 years putting down money for a car that isnt rwd, fun, and classed well in SCCA autocross. (i.e. diesels suck here)

Re: Diesel fanboys: time to put up or shut up - HAULN-SS - 11-28-2012

You buy a new diesel truck, DJ?

Re: Diesel fanboys: time to put up or shut up - ScottyB - 11-28-2012

i'll never understand why they won't put a little sub-3L engine like this in a ranger-sized pickup.

if i commuted a LOT i'd consider one, but i don't have interest in anything without a manual tranny regardless. but its Mazda, so i have to believe it would be available.

Re: Diesel fanboys: time to put up or shut up - HAULN-SS - 11-28-2012

Didn't isuzu put a small diesel in their colorado?

That little 4-banger seems like its going to be awesome, I can't wait to drive one. What's DEF?

i have no idea. is this something that was sold in the states or out in south america or what not?

Mahindra was about to release a pickup here with a 2.2 diesel last year, but they hit a bunch of walls trying to get approved for sale here. and then nobody would buy them i'm sure, but that's probably because they're Indian.

HAULN-SS Wrote:You buy a new diesel truck, DJ?

Not new, new to me

2006 GMC 2500HD Crew Cab Long Bed with the LBZ/6speed allison combo. Only two years of that without emissions crap. That said, I would have loved a newer truck like an 2011+ ford or 2012+ dodge; but it would limit how much racing I could do next season.

Edit:

DEF is Diesel Exhaust Fluid. Mandated on all new trucks to reduce emissions. Yes even the new Dodge has it for this upcoming year. It was the only out of the big three that didnt before.

Not in the US.

The last diesel Isuzu was the P'up:

My dad loved that truck.

Gotcha. Is it really that much of a pain in the ass/expense to have the tank changed out? How often does it have to be done?

My dad bought the new Ram 2500 Cummins back in April, that I6 is so baller.

My buddy whom owns a landscaping company has two of these- both with Allison combo- LOVES them both and are workhorses - your going to love it

Re: Diesel fanboys: time to put up or shut up - HAULN-SS - 11-28-2012

Nice..those 2500's are good trucks..thats a good configuration on the bed/cab too. That's the one thing I wish my F250 had - crew cab. Ive often thought about flipping it and getting a GMC, since i'm more of a chevy guy anyway.

Also - I think that bluetec merc requires that DEF doesn't it?

Re: Diesel fanboys: time to put up or shut up - SlimKlim - 11-28-2012

HAULN-SS Wrote:Also - I think that bluetec merc requires that DEF doesn't it?

Yeah, just found an article about it. In typical fashion, the dealer will absolutely scalp you on it and charge $300+ to fill it up, but you can buy the DEF fluid for ~$5/gallon at Autozone and fill up the tank yourself for about $40. I think it needs to be done every 15-20k miles. If you really can just buy it yourself it doesn't sound like that big of a deal to do every year or two.

well holly sh*t

And that Mazda looks alright too! :dunno: I hadn't heard about that at all.

I like this thread.

So.... anyone heard about the Diesel Cruise? It seems odd to me that everything I've seen says it's coming out 2013... and there's still no details.

I too think the DEF is pretty dumb, especially since VW seems to know how to get along in the US without it. But in the grand scheme of things, it's a pretty minor thing to do once or twice a year.
