Educational Meetings - D_Eclipse9916 - 11-28-2012
During our current student meetings, what exactly is being shown?
In the days when we were there, there was the usual "cool videos" and upcoming events and the such. But we also had special presentations that were very interesting.
I know we had Dr. Borg come in, and Greg Schaeffer from Mid-Atlantic Motorwerkes. We also had students post up presentations of a certain platform (didnt even need to be their car but most of the time it worked out that way). During the last year I was there, I did a presentation to explain in technical detail how turbos worked; and answered questions. I know we were going to go further and continue these presentations.
Are they happening? I feel explaining how things work, would make students more ambitious to try things on their own.
BTW- What happened to the bi-weekly meetings? Did they get foregone because of air strip antics?
Suggestion board for certain things to explain? Lets get some resident experts, I know more about turbos, tuning and motors, but I also have some friends in the industry that I could drag down.
Cylinder heads explained (is porting better? What are cathedral ceilings? whats DOHC actually mean? VTEC? cross-flow heads?)
Turbos explained (is bigger better? Whats A/R? Whats variable Vane? Why do I boost spike? Whats a BOV or wastegate?)
Tuning explained (what is knock or the actual proper term for it predetonation, what is the effect of timing vs boost for power?)
Shocks (what they actually do, what you should look for, whats this "crosstalk, hysterisis, high/low speed rebound/compression")
Cylinder block (advantages of aluminum vs iron, what is knife edging? what do they mean by oversquare? what is a domed piston?)
Diesel vs. Gas Engines
Aerodynamics (are they dive planes or canards? does a wing push or suck? what is true downforce vs reduction in lift?)
Painting, the proper way
Explaing wheels/tires (offset/backspacing, advantages of tread block design, slip angle)
Brakes (bigger is better? braking bias? advantages/disadvantages of slotted/drilled? Whats this cyro talk?)
These are just some suggestions, but the one time I explained turbos, it seemed to garner a lot of interest.

By the way, not saying the meetings arent happening, its great we got the air strip to use. Just wondering if we are educating, as well as entertaining (we are a motorsports club)

Last year I know I as a member hated the classroom meetings- well not actually "hate" them but i found them to be boring as all hell.
This year I know the officers and I really focused on getting the members out- ariel, autox, airstrip meets.
I think the recent dislike of the past years classroom meetings is mostly due to not having a format or being interesting at all.
I know classroom meetings are a great way to have an educational format- the colder months are coming....hence why we have waited to use a classroom setting.
Finals and tests are keeping the current students from doing a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. we are all swamped over here and as you can see only a handful of members can even do Karting- which will most likely not happen.
Next semester = cold weather and no bueno for doing outdoor activities.
I love this idea, lets get some ideas rolling and next semester when its freezing out we can have a couple meetings that are educational!
For now, we are winding down the semester- Jon and I and the officers plan on having MANY meetings over xmas break to begin planning and making decisions for next semester.
Also- Jon and I have met with a manager at Quaker Steak and Lube in town and we are bulding a relationship with them which is going to show during the spring semester :wink: we also have planned a welcome back meeting already for members during the first week of classes next semester at the Lube- maybe we can hold an educational meeting there?

I would definitely like to have meeting like that. I don't know what I would be able to present but I wouldn't mind presenting either.

Rex and I have talked about this a couple times. I'm going to put together some presentations on engine diagnosis and some other auto tech related stuff.
I should have some time free next semester to drive down to H-burg to present. I'll be glad to take suggestions on what I am going to talk about, but I was thinking:
-electrical
-manual transmissions (how they work, diagnosis of noises, etc.)
-brakes
-maybe a bit of suspension
Throw out some ideas. What do you all want to learn?

Great, great, great, topics to talk about guys- Jason I definitely would like to cover basic maintenance, but I also want to get into suspension, steering geometry, forced induction would be great to hear about as well too.
Maybe we can choose 2 speakers per meeting

Ohhh, I want to hear about manual transmissions. I changed my clutch but new little of anything about it. I like forced induction also Dan. Electrical would be a good one too.

I know I did a DSM presentation before. Works real well for someone to present on a car they are passionate/knowledgable about.

Sign me up for a talk on my experiences at GM! I worked 3 months, then went to class for 3 months and so on for 3 years. I worked in manufacturing plant layout design, assembly tooling downtime tracking, CAD design, path-planning, Y-car SSC (Corvette ZR1) in-plant implementation, paint shop operations, 60% dynamometer testing, and post-test engine teardown (specialty in forced induction - turbo'd LNF and supercharged LS9/LSA). In all honesty, I think I could talk for an hour and barely touch on all of my experiences and I'm totally down for it! If members aren't interested they can leave or ask me to sit down and shut up. If they're engaged I'll just keep talking, haha! I did powerpoint presentations at the end of every 3 month rotation, so I already have a large source of presentation-grade material to pull from.
I still feel my mechanical aptitude is sub-par compared to most MM'ers because the UAW meant I could rarely do anything hands on. I dealt with numbers and did a lot of data recording through observation. It's totally different compared to the "have hammer, will remove stuck brake caliper" approach to cars and I want to share what that's like.

I have a bit of experience from technical school working on chassis and engine dynos, but not nearly enough to really know how to use them. Neverthless, 680 horsepower at the wheels is always fun when you get to play with a chassis dyno. I suppose I'd like to learn more about the flywheel stuff though. We hit on that, but it wasn't as entertaining, and we didn't go over enough to really understand anything. I guess for me, since I've done the "yeah get a bigger hammer" approach for a few years and I'm now working on a mechanical engineering degree, I'd like to learn about the numbers side of it. We simply didn't have enough time at NTI to cover everything I'd like to know because the classes were only 3 weeks long.
Anything you want to learn about the hands-on side, let me know. I have plenty of experience in that department.

What I want, is for Kaan, Pete, Evan, and whoever else has some welding education/expertise to lead a Weldathon. Get some metal, get a location, and learn to weld some shit with the A-Team theme song playing in the background. Then hope no one gets blinded or otherwise injured.

I think there are a couple welders at my house, along with plenty of space. This might be doable if people didn't mind driving to Winchester. :dunno:
