Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 06-27-2016 I'm surprised it made it as far as it did. I didn't mind the show, it had its moments and Rut and Tanner can be pretty funny at times. I blame the producers of the show. It felt like they just tried to copy and paste the exact format of the UK show and just trim out 15 minutes for commercials and it always felt so forced. They should've had the balls to give the guys 3 vehicles, a destination, and just let the cameras roll. Also, when they "build" a ridiculous vehicle don't just roll the garage door open and have it be done, at least get some footage of them beating on stuff with hammers and arguing, even if they still aren't actually building anything themselves. Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 06-27-2016 Supposedly the show got better in seasons 2 and 3 but I had already checked out. Like Jon said, trying too hard to copy TGUK wholesale rather than doing their own thing to fit the talent and audience. Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 06-27-2016 Honestly if you have Hulu and are just starving for something to watch check out some of the later episodes from season 3 or early season 4. The "Viking Truck" one where they take these old 4x4s on 44"s and try to drive them up an active volcano, or the "Big Cars" one where they buy the biggest cars from the 70s and drive them across the bible belt. I'm not saying it's a great show, but it's a whole lot fuckin' better than Fast 'n' Loud or whatever other crap makes up American car-related TV. Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 06-27-2016 SlimKlim Wrote:.I rarely watch automotive shows anymore because of shows like Fast n Loud and that damn bro diesel truck show. I am a HUGE fan of Wayne Carini and Chasing Classic Cars (Velocity) and Jay Leno's Garage. Wayne is likely one of the biggest car nuts on the planet and knows his shit. Leno, also a big car nut, and has the comedic aspect down pat. Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 06-27-2016 I dropped cable when I moved so I haven't been watching any of those shows but I did like Carini's show for background entertainment. He seems like a pretty nice guy and his shop is cool but the show is always the same thing, over and over. He finds a car, he gets on a plane, looks at it, the family doesn't want to sell it cause GramMammy had Papaw in the back seat of the thing back in '37. He flies home. He gets a call. He goes back. They go behind a closed door to negotiate price because it would be tacky to show us plebes those details, then he ships it home, has it restored (which we see a few minutes of if we're lucky), and then sells it at auction. *shrug* I'd love to meet the guy or buy a car from him if I had the means but I'd rather watch TG USA with all its faults than his show. Jay Leno's Garage gets kind of boring to me too, I'll ocassionally watch one when the car is interesting but I usually skip through a few parts when he rambles. Also, why isn't Matt Farah funnier on camera? His podcast has a lot of funny moments but in front of a camera he goes into his presenter voice and is stiff as a board. He's a bit more relaxed in the One Takes but they are still sort of hit or miss. Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 06-27-2016 TGUK is having issues too, apparently Matt LeBlanc and Chris Evans aren't getting along....at all http://www.autoblog.com/2016/06/27/matt ... -top-gear/ Re: Automotive News Discussion - ScottyB - 06-27-2016 i'm wondering if i should pony up for MotorTrend On Demand. i love Roadkill, Dirt Every Day, Head 2 Head etc on their youtube channel but i don't know if i really need even more stuff to watch. Wow Re: Automotive News Discussion - HAULN-SS - 06-27-2016 I might have to start a new thread soon on what wagon to buy after I sell this thing back. I wasn't expecting 5k to be on the low end. If they do that + buyback, no question I'll be ditching it before it implodes. Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 06-27-2016 If anyone doesn't take the cash and the buy back they should be smacked. Re: Automotive News Discussion - .RJ - 06-28-2016 So when is the buyback/cash supposed to be open? Also, what the fuck is VW going to do holding nearly half a million cars on their lots? Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 06-28-2016 .RJ Wrote:Also, what the fuck is VW going to do holding nearly half a million cars on their lots?Send them to the scrap yard to recoup whatever cash they can I'm guessing. Transporting them is going to cost a metric fuck ton. It does get a little stale over time. I think I enjoy learning about the cars the most. Also his mechanic, Roger, is hilarious and brilliant when it comes to older cars. That guy should be considered a national treasure concerning all things automotive. Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 06-28-2016 .RJ Wrote:So when is the buyback/cash supposed to be open? Can they resell them? Or do they have to crush them or retrofit them to be emissions compliant if they want to resell them? This settlement really hurts, but I am wondering if their bean counters are expecting to lighten the financial load by the possibility of these owners using the buyback and cash as an opportunity to just buy a newer VW. Free money and buyback are great but people still need their cars. Obviously the option is there to go buy another make but if I was a smart dealership (and parent company) I would push hard to sell one of the newer models when I have someone come back in to the store to trade in their diesel with a handful of free cash... Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 06-28-2016 I also cut the cord about 2 years ago but one show I did really like was Wheeler Dealers. Those two had a genuine passion for all kinds of cars and it was interesting to see what they did to get them in working order. Also cool that they actually did sell the cars to people, you can actually go to their site and buy their fixer uppers. My favorite series was the one where Mike? would travel across the world starting with a really really cheap car and fixing up / trading up until he got a "supercar". Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 06-28-2016 WRXtranceformed Wrote:Can they resell them? Or do they have to crush them or retrofit them to be emissions compliant if they want to resell them? They haven't announced 'the fix' yet, but they are saying it will likely hurt performance as well as MPG so it is unlikely anyone will want to buy a 'fixed' car. I really think they are just going to have to dump them on scrap yards. Paying people to pick the cars apart for usable parts is an idea, but likely not financially feasible. Re: Automotive News Discussion - Ken - 06-28-2016 .RJ Wrote:So when is the buyback/cash supposed to be open? One really big write-off? Re: Automotive News Discussion - HAULN-SS - 06-28-2016 Cargo shipping is at the lowest rates in history - I wouldn't be surprised to see them shipped off to some 2nd or 3rd world countries that DGAF about emissions. Re: Automotive News Discussion - BLINGMW - 06-28-2016 So I wonder when/if someone's done an analysis of which has a larger environmental impact? That *is* the "problem" we're trying to solve, right? Allowing these still-relatively-clean diesels to live out their lives, or using a lot of energy to dispose of and replace them all prematurely? |
