It's a cool car, guy is here in Richmond. Haven't talked to him, but the car is HNGGGGGGGGGG

Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 06-02-2016

That guy is down in Richmond, he's had/built some of the nicest cars I've ever seen. I think he just sold that Estoril E38 that I've posted here before.

EDIT: What Justin said...

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 06-02-2016

Can someone please go become his friend???

Re: Automotive News Discussion - PDenbigh - 06-02-2016

Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 06-02-2016

Yeah his name is Brandon... he had a turbo'd E34 525i before the wagon. Apparently he's kind of a dick but he builds good cars.

He also had an Estoril Blue E38 740i, which he just re-sold, but he bought it already painted blue and didn't do much to it. Apparently his wife thought it was ugly so he got rid of it.

New Audi A5. Nice iterative improvement, I like that the character lines on the side are much more defined now. The old model was kinda slab sided. Not my taste per se but overall I like it. Nice to see they're going back to a twin-turbo V6 for the S5. Maybe the RS5 will have the power and chassis to run with the big boys.

And as a bonus, if you get in a front-end collision, you can use Ford Fusion parts to save a few bucks!

Wow the hood is pretty much identical.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 06-20-2016

Any of you Trek nerds out there may have heard that Anton Yelchin (from the new Star Trek movies) was crushed by his car when it rolled into him and pinned him to a mail box pillar. Sad They confirmed that it was a 2015 Grand Cherokee which was one of the cars in recall for its confusing shifter (people didn't know the car was in neutral instead of park and there have been a bunch of instances of vehicles rolling away). Super sad, curious to see if this was actually the case:

THAT part I had not heard! Damn. :| I'll add that to my list of reasons to not buy GM.

Isn't the Jeep a Fiat-Chrysler?

That said. I understand the shifter may be confusing, but to leave it in neutral would mean that the driver made effort to put it in Park. They just assumed neutral was park, right? It would be different if you had to leave it in neutral and then do something else, but in this car, you still shift all the way up to park, then the shifter returns to neutral. Bad design, but I wouldn't think FCA is at fault. That is driver error.

Yeah it's Chrysler not GM. Who knows legally where they would fall with this, but the fact that there is a recall out to me wouldn't bode well for them.

I think I have the shifter in question, and the "gears" don't have designated positions. You nudge the shifter back to go from P-R-N-D, and nudge it forward to go in the opposite direction - and there's a button you need to push to make change-of-direction moves.

It's actually pretty easy to nudge it from D with the intent of going to P, while winding up in N or R - usually when you don't push the button hard or early enough. There is a super forward "nudge point" (?) when you go up to P, but it's not that different from regular forward and yeah...easy to miss.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 06-20-2016

It's the worst design in the history of automatic shifters. It's all electronic so the lever doesn't "click" into the desired gear. You flick it back and forth. Emily and I looked at one and when we researched them there are hundreds of stories on the Internet of people having their Cherokees roll away. I believe they have recalled it.

What they could have done was simply what BMW does. If the car is in drive and the door opens it automatically goes to park. Typical Chrysler crap. Doesn't even pass the idiot test but somehow makes it to production.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - ViPER1313 - 06-20-2016

When I read this, I felt really sad and pissed at the same time. To quote myself from 6 months ago:

ViPER1313 Wrote:This is one area that I wish someone would actually step in and regulate a few standard designs for shifters. The gear selector is a vital piece of safety equipment, and button shifters don't lend themselves to quick muscle-memory reactions the same way that stick based shifters do. If the accelerator sticks on a standard column shifter, a bump of the shifter from D to N is all that is needed, which even someone who is ham-fisted and flustered can accomplish in about half a second. On a button shift auto, you have to look down, then press N for 2 or 3 seconds, which in a 300hp car may equate to 30+mph of gained speed while waiting for the car to come out of gear. Same thing goes with pushbutton start.

Obviously a lack of defined gates and feedback is an issue even when you are not in a panic situation. I still fail to see the allure of all these goofy ass push button / joystick / rotary shifters. How are they functionally better than a gated shifter?

Agreed completely. I will say, with my Jag at least the rotary shifter had some tactile feedback in between each knob turn. It was never confusing what gear you were in. That system definitely isn't necessary though. I like the good ole between the seats stick shifter in my truck.
