I drive like a machine. If I am not passing someone, I am in the middle travel lane, where I will drive at cruising speed until I am 3' from the car in front of me, signal left and pass, then return to the travel lane. This helps me justify my feelings of superiority and entitlement on the road, because I am driving "correctly". In heavy traffic however, I will do that.

By the sounds of it, you are the guy driving along in the fast lane, for no reason, not passing anyone, not paying attention to your speed as you mess with the radio or dig through a mountain of water bottles/redbull cans going anywhere between 65 and 73. You see me in the middle lane slowly passing you and speed up so I cant make it over to pass the guy I am encroaching on.

I hate you. I obviously caught up to you , meaning I've been traveling at a faster speed, yet as soon as I am next to you , you decide you want to drive faster. You are like a little kid wanting to be first in line. This is when I do the very slow turn of my head and stare at you while continuing to drive at speed. Picture the T1000 in Terminator 2. Trying to kill you with my eyes. Then we dance. Me again, driving "correctly", you at various and inconsistent speeds. You move to the center lane, completing your pass of me. I stay at speed, exactly 75. Three miles later you are back to your distracted moron routine, slowing down without noticing, I change lanes, start to overtake, still exactly 75. You see this and speed up.

This continues like a cock-tease version of leap frog ending with me pulling in behind you at the Target I had no plans of going to in the spot right next to you. Your plate number written on the pad in my console. Staring as you get out of your car, you slightly nervous, me behind icy metallic aviators, rigid, expressionless. You head down the aisle of the parking lot, headed to pick up some moron device or wart cream at discount, I pull back out of the spot, slowly, just letting the engine pull, no gas pedal, a low rumble, almost unnoticeable but you still pick up its murmur, wishing you didn't. You try and convince yourself that my truck is still parked safely in its spot, not positioning itself in the aisle behind you. I tap the gas lightly and you turn around, like tapping on a fish tank. You are the brainless fish jerking your face around with frightened curiosity. I let the engine pull again, no pedal, slowly following your every panicked, rigid step, pulling around to the curb and watching as you enter the store. I'm gone when you emerge from the store 20 minutes later.

Relieved but not completely, you drive home, eyes glued to the rearview, checking for me. You are short with your wife at home, mean to the kids to make up for the inferiority you felt on your drive, to prove to yourself that you are still in control. You wake in the night, soaked in sweat, swearing you heard a rumble.
