D_Eclipse9916 Wrote:Factory Five/Spec Iron..awesome, but nothing local, and "barely" national. Spec E30 still has my interest as well, so does Spec Miata. The idea of being in the middle of 40-odd cars in the same class gets me all tingly inside. The "price" of Spec Miata scares me on top of the "cheating/bendy rules interpretation", and the "tin-can" and slow disappearance of Spec E30 has me worried.
I wouldnt worry too much about the SM rules 'issues', thats goign to happen with any class as popular/competitive as it is (without seals, anyway) and if its anybody's fault its SCCA for not writing better rules. And the good news is that all that money being poured into the cars doesnt result in nearly as much of a performance delta as a more open class, so you have more of a chance of outdriving the money cars with skill.

Is the Spec MX5 class based on the 06+ cars taken off at all? Seems like it would be fun, more power than regular SMs and a slightly bigger chassis that would be easier to fit in.

Quote:Talked at length with a guy about F2000 but its a bit pricey for me. I have also thought about SRF, but I don't like SCCA. I just don't. I race for the weekend experience, I couldn't be one of those guys that shows up to race, races, and goes home. I want to drink/hang out/shoot the shit. I also don't like having to travel so far unless I want to. SCCA/BMWCCA have a lot of "out of region stuff" which is a pain. Convince me though, details?
yeah any of the engine-build open wheel classes like F2000 are kind of dumb IMO. I would never wnat to spend that much time with an engine builder.....
FE is a neat class, sealed stock mazda3 engine and a swappable sports racer body. Local car counts probably arent what you are looking for though. Talked to a guy who sold his, bought a C6 to do track days, and was bored with how slow the vette was comparitavely.....
SRF is supposed to be pretty awesome with the new engine. Chan and I talked last year about going in on one together.
Kind of slow though (but still faster than sm)

I didn't read in great lengths -- but what in the ruleset relates to expensive costs to build a SE46? Only thing I picked up on was the spec-MCS coilovers (compared to a SM suspension spec).

And then all the TBD's kind of bothered me.

Those rules are a wide open barn door... Wow $$$$$$

Yup, I have talked in great lengths with them and trying to get them to close at least some of the doors. The rules I attached are just preliminary rules as a new ruleset will be ready for next year. (2014 was just one event for Spec E46).

That said, they are not tightening it down as much as I would like. I don't mind expensive good suspensions, as long as we can "lock it down". I want a fun car to drive, I don't particularly like NA/NB Miatas for their ridiculously short wheelbase (personal preference). NC Miatas are much better but there is no good class for them, never heard of any Spec MX5 taking off.

I just...don't....know. My half-brother ended up buying a gts2 car last night out of the blue.

I'll cast a vote for Spec Cop Car. Long wheelbase, cheap point of entry, durable drivetrain... what's not to love?

Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - .RJ - 11-04-2014

The motor, ecu and shock development are the big expenses that are wide open. Although, if you look at what happened in spec miata, its no different just more expensive to get smaller gains, so maybe its not that awful to be up front about it that these things are open.

ECU isnt wide open. It's locked down by Epic. That said, who knows. I AM worried about the motor/shock and differential. I really should drive a SpecE30 to see if I can deal with it.

You guys get one and I'll be your crew.

Then we'd at least have 3 guys who could drink and shoot the shit afterwards :dunno:

Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - Kaan - 11-04-2014

If money were no object (which it always is) I'd say go with American Iron. You don't even have to go "spec mustang" because I think the "new" SS can be more than competitive within the rules. There are some of the first year SS grand am cars coming up for sale here and there. but again... the AI game is pricey. its another power to weight class. its another class with a spec tire and FAT cars. blah blah blah

Unless you think the E36 chassis is too outdated to keep up in GTS... I would think it would be crazy to sell one GTS car for another. especially since you have been winning in it. but its already sold so I guess I know where you stand.

the SM/SE30 world is muddy. a good SM chassis is developed over time. Id also say that is true for the E30s. Both of them run "spec" $7k motors. I think there is less "cheating" going on in SE30... and in SM you never know whats going to show up. like the guy that was like "oh I left the hoo hoos on from last SCCA weekend... my bad"

each region has a strong class. so far in MA I think AI and SM are the strongest outside of GTS. if you went to NE events I'd vote limited prep S2k for HC. Smile

Someone will figure out how to crack that open and then toggle the map with a cruise control switch.

the entertainment value would be off the charts. watching a field of those dice for position, half sideways, using up every straight body panel in the process would be too good to miss.

here i always thought it was a play on the 555 livery from your subaru days.

Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - Goodspeed - 11-06-2014

I'm really surprised there isn't a "Spec NC" or something like that already, like all the BMW classes and Spec 350Z (is that even still a thing?). There's a huge stockpile of those cars that aren't getting raced hardly anywhere just waiting to be put into service, and they're getting really cheap now. I think there is a regional SCCA class for them somewhere but it seems like a huge no-brainer.

Fap:

also, when I googled "NC Miata track car":

yeah, there is. SM5, similar to the pro mx-5 playboy cup cars (with cheaper shocks). Looks like locally they get about 5 cars per race. Not bad for a 3 year old class.

Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - Goodspeed - 11-06-2014

I kind of wished I lived in SoCal for the Miata Challenge. Like SM, but more open with mods, and informal.

I would be all for the SM5 but entry and logistics costs are insane for cross country series

And the MMiata boys are out of hibernation
