Its more fun when you beat the car's owner
- ScottyB - 01-02-2008 i think i'm getting a better idea of why the RS pings so badly on anything less than 93: ![]() ^^ graph taken from a car being logged from 2k rpm to redline. this is the factory tune. basically the car is trying to stay stoich until going pig rich like someone hit an on/off switch -- dyno tunes confirm that power plummets at high rpms for this reason. odds are subaru has it tuned this way to keep fuel milage high in the typical "highway" rpms. i've heard of WRX's in later years being tuned like this from the factory as well. i've never expereinced pinging above 5k rpm either, which now makes sense. looks like i may consider getting the car tuned so i can run 87 but keep the same horsepower....maybe actually gain some (remember, i bought the car to be a cheapskate but still have fun, so i want to run piss-gas). - D_Eclipse9916 - 01-02-2008 Holy shit 14.1? damn they definitely put it on the limit, you will ping definitely using piss gas. Tune it for a good 13.5 or lower across the board and you should be fine. The factory did not tune it like this for gas mileage at highway rpms. When you are on the highway your car goes back into closed loop mode and does stoich, not the numbers you see on a dyno graph. You will most likely lose a few lbs of torque at most, and gain 4-5 horsepower up top. - ScottyB - 01-02-2008 D_Eclipse9916 Wrote:The factory did not tune it like this for gas mileage at highway rpms. hmph...i have no idea then  what you said about closed loop makes sense too, nobody is going to do a pull at like half throttle, ha. D_Eclipse9916 Wrote:You will most likely lose a few lbs of torque at most, and gain 4-5 horsepower up top. good to know. i honestly don't care too much about losing a few horsies, i just want to be able to beat on it and not be concerned about running so lean. - ScottyB - 01-05-2008 Andy, Hunter, Lee.... you guys every have any piston slap in your subies on cold mornings? mine has started lightly knocking during warmup in the morning since it's gotten real cold at night. not a death rattle or a rod bearing, but it could be the t-belt tensioner, which i've heard is another thing that could make that type of noise. once the car is warm it goes away but it still bothers me despite hearing that it's a "subaru thing." pistons shouldn't be floppin around all nimbly-bimbly in the cylinders! car still makes great power, returns 28-30 mpg and doesn't use any more oil than usual so i doubt it's anything pressing, i guess? i'll probably make an appointment with the dealer and leave the car overnight with them just to have them confirm that they hear the same thing....might come in handy later
- WRXtranceformed - 01-05-2008 FWIW I never noticed that sound in either of my Subies that I can remember, other than the normal tick of the built block. That is pretty normal for that boxer motor though. Twat oil are you running right now? Weight? Dino or synthetic? Even when it was cold as balls I didn't notice any crazy noises on my old WRX.. if it's going away when the car warms up I wouldn't stress over it though. - ViPER1313 - 01-05-2008 Dear Scotty, My mom's old Geo Prizm would ping like hell whenever it was warm out, going up hills or if you just looked at it wrong. It still did it when we sold it with 140k miles on it. You car is fine. It doesn't need a retune and its not going to blow up. Just enjoy it. Its not going to die like an FD turbo if it pings a little bit. If the knock sensor and 02s aren't throwing codes don't worry about it. If its not broken, don't fix it. You will save yourself a lot of worrying and money in the long run. - Andy - 01-05-2008 ViPER1313 Wrote:Dear Scotty, +Juan You fret way too much over this car. As long as you leave the engine alone, it'll run forever. With regard to the piston slap noise, yes I heard it on cold mornings on both of our subies. I'd imagine it's due to the boxer design. I've heard it from day 1 and I haven't had any reliability issues with it. I think Subaru actually issued a statement about that noise and confirmed that it's nothing to worry about. - .RJ - 01-05-2008 Its the piston design - nothing to worry about really B00st it!
- ScottyB - 01-05-2008 sorry....i'm a big pussy when it comes to funky sounds. thanks for the advice though, i do appreciate it  FWIW i do enjoy the car, i'm just one of those people i guess...can't leave well enough alone. - ScottyB - 01-14-2008 so anyway. changed my oil the other weekend. i'm currently using Castrol "German" 0W-30 synth because of the excellent results i consistently see from used oil analysis on all cars, and because i want to spread my oil changes out even further. upon changing the oil i noticed a very fine gold "dust" in the pan. not shavings, just a few pieces of dust. not sure what to think....car drives great, but again i know that you shouldn't see that stuff in your oil. maybe stuff is still breaking in? better yet maybe it's from the Xterra and i didn't wipe the pan out well enough last time  . I'm going to keep driving it and at the next oil change do a Blackstone analysis and hope for the best. If not....5/60 powertrain warranty i hope . i'm tired of worrying anymore....i just don't care....so i'll probably just drive it until it blows up.fun stuff: got some JDM (y0!) neck rests for my seats....the way the seat is contoured i can't really put my head back and relax. hopefully this will help. ebay+10 dollah = happy ![]() did some DIY action with a "home depot lip." basically a garage door seal that you flip around and it makes a nice lip at the bottom of the bumper. i thought the car needed something up front, i had 10 bucks, and an hour to burn. pics/flaming later! OK here i could use some feeback. my RE92s are getting some dry rot going on so that's pretty much the last straw. i'm down to three choices for rubber: Fuzion ZRi: ![]() cheap! good treadwear, supposedly pretty grippy. basically a bridgestone tire branded for the kiddies as i understand it. Dave you had these on your 240 right? Falken FK452 ![]() similar to the fuzions but apprently grippier still, very good wearing and should handle rain great. i'm about 75% sure i'll go with these. Yokohama S.Drive ![]() Yokos newest offering. Price is highest. supposedly a very nice DD tire because it's quiet and hanldles rain well but still grips. anyone with experience on any of these, or close to these models? - Dave - 01-15-2008 i don't know anything about the falkens, but i liked the fuzions. The price/performance made them a great bargain. Not exactly the best tire for a track car that is being pushed hard, but did everything i needed for DD and autoX. - BLINGMW - 01-15-2008 ScottyB Wrote:did some DIY action with a "home depot lip." Hey, where do you get that German Castrol anyway? The Mini was supposed to get that stuff, I couldn't find it and gave up. But in another 15,000 miles, I'll probably be looking again... do you have to order it? - .RJ - 01-15-2008 You have to buy it at Autozone - I think I drove past a big ass 24 hr joint near your house down there. - ScottyB - 01-15-2008 BLINGMW Wrote:Hey, where do you get that German Castrol anyway? But in another 15,000 miles, I'll probably be looking again... do you have to order it? yep autozone. they only carry individual quarts, and it's fairly expensive but i like it. it's got a big red label on the front that specifies that it's a "euro blend" or something. - HAULN-SS - 01-15-2008 Man..you guys and oil. I'll never understand it - Ginger - 01-15-2008 ... you don't care what you put in your engine? |
