you proved my point
Evan Wrote:You arent old or boring enough to own one of those.

there are plenty of cars out there that are efficient and reliable and much more fun to drive.

- HAULN-SS - 08-02-2007

heh. I mean, I'm not too crazy about blue/blue either, and I am pretty sure they make blue/black...but if it was my money, especially on a car i was going to keep for years, that's what I'd get. Rednecks love heritage, and quirks. Blue interior is a quirk, and it is a "gto" afterall.

- Goodspeed - 08-02-2007

FYI, If you're patient (and perhaps with a little luck) you could find a GTE swapped/6 speed SC300. This one is currently for sale for 18.5 in Iowa for example

Blair could fill you in more, but you can find 1J swapped/manual examples well within your budget as well. If, as you say the car will be primarily a highway cruiser thats fun, I don't think you could go wrong with a Lexus such as this. Reliable + classy

an older, swapped vehicle is a bit of a gamble compared to what i've been looking at. tempting, but a gamble none the less. it's basically going to be a car that i drive every day, all year, and expect at least 25 mpg out of on the highway. i'm also really not interested in a turbo car right now, for various reasons.

i appreciate everyone's help though. good stuff to know.

Word, well IMO you got it down pat then. Get that GTO. Theres been so many whats and why's on here over that car....you'd almost be doing a service for the community by buying one and shedding some first hand light on it

- HAULN-SS - 08-02-2007

I second that! I can tell you from first hand test drive experience, rocketing up an on-ramp not yet out of 2nd gear will put a smile on your face first thing in the morning =)

- HAULN-SS - 08-02-2007

on second thought, we better not push him too hard, or he'll come out of left field in a focus or something

heh, I get the same smile out of all of my dumb cars!

For some people, it doesn't take much

well the hunt is over. most of you guys won't be impressed i guess, but it will be a fun car that i can drive hard and not worry about. alot of potential for tweaking too, which i can't help but do.

i kinda went against some of my own rules and really had to rethink my budget after i found out how little interest my audi has pulled in private sales and how poorly the resale is in trade in. i won't delete this thread since there was alot of good insight and debating on cars that some people may consider some day.

i'll post up some things i covered when i looked at used cars that may also be helpful

It's a focus ain't it?

C'mon Scotty, don't leave us hangin!

You can delete threads?

Sounds good Scotty. Can't wait to see it. My parents just picked up a 2007 Civic sedan with Navi. 3 Hondas btwn the two of them.

Tell us your secret!

- ScottyB - 08-13-2007

i'll pick it up sometime this week. the guy i got it from is a pretty cool gearhead, has an E36 M3, used to have a supercharged fox body and a bike, but got engaged so his toys have to go  he likes his M the best so he'd dropping his DD.

like i said...nothing amazing but it's just plain fun to drive, and it's gonna feel really nice to not be dumping so much money into maintenance/gas/insurance for a while. Rex said it best...."the only thing wrong with it is that the WRX exists", ha! and holy crap do these things have an aftermarket, i can't wait! i'll probably bomb around in this for a long time in preparation for something manlier (way off in the future though).

2005 2.5RS
- 5 speed
- 26k miles
- sport package ("ground effects" aluminum pedals, 6-disc CD changer, body-color mirrors, WRX front seats, momo steering wheel, some different instrumentation and fog light covers)
- the owner has already added a kartboy short shifter w/STi knob, STi shock tower braces and a grounding kit....pretty much what i probably would have added myself.

can't wait to start autocrossing again

Jeersty!

- ScottyB - 08-13-2007

for Feerst-o: got it for 14.5....i thought i did alright considering the rarity of the car in this area and finding anything for that eqiupment level at those miles at that price, with warranty left over. condition wise, it's cherry - when i got it inspected, i went underneath it with a tech and it's practically cleaner underneath than my car is on top...and although i don't like to always go by what "the book' says, in this case it's worth at least 1k more in this condition.
