I dunno, my boss just bought a 2001 GS500 for $2200.... 3900 miles on it. They're so cheap that there's no sense in buying one thats 17 years old. Just my $.02.

if you're not willing to dish out double the price for something newer it's a good bike. you'll only be using it to learn/commuting anyway.
you can even still talk him down below $1k based on the age alone.

But, the newer bike wont need tires, or a chain, or a battery, or.... any number of things an old bike might need. And if you sell it in 6-12 months for what you paid for it, the newer bike will be easier to sell.
