So this was like 2007-2008 or even earlier?

I love this build and can’t wait to see it in person or even help if you need some extra hands, by that of course I mean sit back and watch as you spend an hour clipping in a piece of interior trim.

Just curious, if I remember correctly, wasn’t this originally going to be a car for your dad? Call me crazy but this level of detail normally isn’t associated with gifts for others versus gifts for yourself.

You mentioned Rich, does that mean you won’t be anything in the garage with some fellow MMers or is he only doing parts of it?

Thanks!  The car is meant to be shared in part with my dad, yeah.  He's happy to garage it for me and has driven it to local C&C's, and I'm sure will enjoy going for other cruises in the future, stuff like that.  It was a gift to myself for my 30th birthday but also something I can share with him.

For the schedule of what happens where and when, I'm not 100% sure yet.  At the very least I'd like Rich to strip everything out of the engine bay so it can be repainted, the motor rebuilt, uprated twin turbos installed and general restoration of that area of the car.  I also have suspension, brakes, and other parts that he may take care of.

I have a sneaking suspicion that with all the new weatherstripping & exterior trim to go on, as well as the unpainted '99 bumper, unpainted headlight covers, and the used '99 wing (that is OEM Vintage Red, but may not be exactly my Vintage Red), together with minor issues here and there to touch up, that the car may end up just getting a totally new paint job to make sure everything matches.

If that's the case, the interior will get refreshed last, and whether the paintwork happens up in NJ or down here in the DC area is up in the air at the moment.  It's in my plans to also replace the carpet, which requires pulling the dash which isn't the easiest, and having another experienced hand with that is highly recommended.

So...we'll see...

I think the amber would look more classic but I wouldn't blame you for going white.

And yeah, I think Goodspeed wins the cookie of the first MMer to tackle an honest to god restoration of a car. We should get him a trophy, along with one for DJ for "first MMer to build a full blown track car"

Yeah, it was a tough call and I can always switch things up in the future, but for now we'll see how I take to the amber - I think it'll be pretty spot on.  And Deceus started before me with his Dodge, and has busted way more knuckles than me, so please give the trophy to him!

What did he build?

A Spec Miata more than a decade back now, I think he was actually an early SM champion.  Where is that cat these days, still puttering around in the Exige?

RJ also built a pretty competitive H4 Integra if I recall correctly.

I remember the weeping and gnashing of teeth when they would bumpdraft each other. Being totally different race classes they weren't competing with each other, but both would go faster. Hilarious.

In fact - this jogged my memory - I have right here one of my moldiest of oldy moves from 2006, skip to 11:45 for video of Evan and the gang at Summit!

RE: Project FD RX-7 - D_Eclipse9916 - 02-15-2018

One of my first times flagging Evan convinced me to be a flagger at this random outfit. I worked it and then they went under so I never got my track time.... womp womp.

There was also...damn what was his name, with the AI race car? I am definitely not the first in MM to go racing. I think I am the only one to continue with it more than 3 years because of pure stupidity.

Chad.

Calendars go back that far?

no we wrote on stone tablets and our track cars had carburetors

Edit: real talk though, the first few years of MM photos were taken on a borrowed media lab camera with FLOPPY DRIVE storage.

Sony Mavica!

We had those too, through high school years. I think they got replaced (slowly) by 2-megapixel cameras that took CompactFlash cards my senior year. And now my $800 Grindr machine that fits in my pocket can take thousands of images that rival some "real" cameras. Amazing.

RE: Project FD RX-7 - .RJ - 02-15-2018

lol @ Grindr machine.

MM history is a fun trip to go down.

If only we had a thread for MM Memories.

you posted rotary videos without gratuitous fireballs, your argument is invalid

What in gods name was that last car??

basically a one-off car built by Scoot Sports in Japan to show off their fab skills.  custom bodywork, 4-rotor engine similar to what the 787B lemans car had.  the more rotors you add, the more they sound like an F1 engine with a hotrod cam.

RE: Project FD RX-7 - boosteddorito - 02-19-2018

Add a rotor while you're at it. I hear its cheap and easy

RE: Project FD RX-7 - Evan - 02-20-2018

LOVE the car Goodspeed! The perfect color too. Cant wait to see it in person.

I come around and lurk every once in a while to see what everyone is up to Smile
I have a smoker and some homebrew on tap, we should all meet up and reminisce about the good old days when it gets warmer.

Lets see, I think Chan was first on track in his Fiero (G too?)
Then Me, Maeng and I think RJ had our cherries popped all at the same event at Summit in... 2002 (or 2003?)
I think RJ had the first jungle gym /rollbar installed in his sparkle turd lunchbox, and I went full JDM retard on my WRX track car build. Then came real racing and my SM build, RJ's H4 Integra (that he drove across the country to buy a base model integra). Gerald bought an already-built integra racecar but I never actually saw it move so it may have been a mirage. And somewhere in there Kaan hit a bear. Ok thats enough hijacking Goodspeed's thread. Now get off my lawn.

Oh man, those were the days. We didnt do it too many times but when we did it was LUDICROUS SPEED. Really messed up my braking cues.
You know you drive a slow car when a base model integra can make you feel like you're flying.

Can't wait to do hoodrat stuff with my friends at the race track.

RE: Project FD RX-7 - Goodspeed - 02-21-2018

Evan!  Holy crap, you're back - glad you're digging the car  Smile

Not much new to report - I got in a fiberglass intercooler duct from Pettit Racing, their "Cool Charge 2" version that should match up fitment wise with the Greddy IC pretty well, and a set of their black silicone radiator hoses.  The car has red Samco ones now and my inner ricer is proud, but black is better.  Planning to get a new Koyo radiator for it to replace whatever rad is in there now too.

Speaking of the intercooler, after karting this past weekend I met up with Ward of 3B Kustomz in Richmond (sorry to bail so hard at lunch but I had to meet him before 2pm and made it with 15 mins to spare) to drop off the kit and some other misc. pieces so he could take care of polishing them up as well as some powdercoating.  He just sent me some progress pics, project "see my face in UHD in my intercooler" is looking to be a roaring success:

(02-09-2018, 03:42 PM)Goodspeed Wrote: So one of the major issues these cars face as they age are electrical gremlins - true of any car, but the rotary can and will absolutely bake the main engine harness into a total hair-pulling mess.  After 2+ decades, mine had visibly seen better days, so to be safe rather than sorry I ordered a new OEM harness that will be wrapped in DEI Fire Sleeve to ensure there'll be no gremlins in this car's future for a long, long time:

The plan is to pair this with a suite of new relays, solenoids, ignition coils, battery wiring, etc...basically whatever I can get my hands on, to bring as much of the rest of electrical system up to code as well.

...picking up where I left off in the above post, I just received the complement to the new engine harness - a new charging harness for the right-side of the bay.  These are hard to come by in the states, and my parts contact (Mazda parts god Ray Crowe) said it might land from Japan by the end of March - it was here in about 8 days!  He's the real MVP in all this, super glad to have his help.  This'll be paired with new battery mounting parts to totally revamp that section of the bay.  Seen here with a bit of extra wiring and one of the new relays that came with the shipment.

I was also maximally-pumped to get back my Greddy intercooler kit from Ward at 3B Kustomz in Richmond.  This kit was in serious need of rejuvenation and he did a frankly amazing job polishing it all up to look better than new; the turbo Y-pipe and some of the piping was powdercoated by Detective Coatings there in Richmond as well.  I decided that a gloss black will look really good against the red and silver of the rest of the bay, and I plan to powdercoat a bunch of other stuff including the intake manifold a nice OEM satin silver like the Y-pipe here:

Can't wait to see that whole system installed.  I should have an update before long with the Fikse wheels being reconditioned - stopped in the other day and saw some progress being made and it shouldn't be long now before they're done.  I elected to switch things up to go with a different finish so fingers crossed it looks as good in person as it does in my head, we'll see - onward to spring and more t00ning!
