Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 03-31-2016

I learned that lesson a long time ago with my S4. I bought it and then figured I would wait on a case I liked from Amazon. Wouldn't you know it, somehow the screen cracked while I was waiting for it and the phone was in my pocket (super rare apparently because even the early Gorilla glass was pretty strong).
I ordered this S7 with a case in the same delivery package. Unfortunately, the dummy on the phone thought I said I wanted the super feminine black sparkly case. So I literally put the phone back inside its box and put it in the center console of my truck until I picked out a case I wanted at the Verizon store. Phone went right from the console into its case.

What I don't mess around with anymore are front screen protectors / tempered glass. The new gen Gorilla glass is pretty gangster, I'm not really worried about the front screen breaking (and my case has a lip that gives it some protection)

I bought a Fi Nexus 5x for a work phone and got the most obnoxious sparkly gold case because a) I don't care and b) it was the one that would be here the same day as the phone.

So, uh, dads.... baby monitors?

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 04-03-2016

We went with this...

http://www.target.com/p/angelcare-ac401 ... A-15031055

The movement pad was more trouble than it was worth, so dont bother. Yea, youll be freaked out wondering if the kid is alive, but when the kid sleeps through the night, you wont wanna be woken up by a false alarm at 4am. Plus, the kid will be sleeping bedside in your room for like 3months anyway.

The temp readout and warning was nice, woke me up in the middle of the night a couple of times to let me know my heat went out at 2am. That was fun swapping out an ignitor at 2am.

Rechargeable, cause you dont have to unplug it when you go out on the patio or to the kitchen to cook.

After 3yrs of use and I think 2yrs by the previous owner, the screens are dead on the receivers, but they still pick up audio.

2 receivers is a must IMO, one in your bedroom, the other for your living room.

Dont cheap out, or youll be listening to static all day.

I'd prob go video monitor if we have another one. Mostly so when they are my kids age now (3), i can make sure she isnt trying to kill herself or the dog while she is playing by herself in her room.

Last note, craigslist, once you pick out a monitor, check craigslist. That one was $150 new 3 yrs ago. Scooped it up on craigslist for $60.

Oh, and CONGRATS!

Idk if I use my phone but I'm not super impressed. I'm below 10% by the end of the day almost every day. I am up early in guess so a day for me is like 18 hours some days but still. I kinda expected it to be about 25% around bed time at least with a brand new phone that advertises on how great the battery is

So 90% usage for an 18 hour day is too much? :evileye:

FWIW, the battery on my S6 edge has hit the shitter at the one year mark. I'm lucky if I get eight hours on moderate usage.

Hmm. If only someone could have recommended getting the Edge for the bigger battery

That being said, that is pretty good battery life for 2.2Ghz quadcore device with a 5.5 UHD screen. Be thankful.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 04-08-2016

Batt life on my 6P is pretty awesome, but it is the size of a teenage girls diary.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 04-08-2016

Yea. I think the edge would have been too big. I probably use my phone too much. Interestingly though, it's the OS using most of it according to the battery page. Pretty sure it's been the screen on all my previous phones

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 04-08-2016

I'm seeing OS taking up most of my battery too. I can get a full day down to like 15% but I use my cell for business and it's connected to Bluetooth a lot. I bet they release an update soon to improve it in marshmallow

We got this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008P ... UTF8&psc=1

The video is nice because you can take a look to see how baby is moving so you can get an idea of why they're crying. With ours, if she's kicking her legs, it's probably gas. The monitor also has lights that tell you how loud the noise is, and it tells you temperature. The night vision only really works if you have some small source in the room like a night light.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - CaptainHenreh - 04-11-2016

On this end, I think video monitors are creepy.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 04-11-2016

This is the one I've been looking at - the functions seem similar. It's expensive, but buy one right?

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 04-11-2016

I probably should have snagged one of these a while ago, but picked this up today because it was on sale on Amazon for $28 and has QC 2.0.

http://www.amazon.com/Qualcomm-RAVPower ... ailpages00

Will be nice for as much as I travel and use my cell phone, or when we are hiking as an emergency backup. For the price I figured that was pretty solid. They make an even bigger one with QC2.0 and USB-C, but my phone doesn't accept that and I was trying to be mindful of size and weight since I usually try to travel as light as possible (and have a bunch of other tech I have to take with me)

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 04-11-2016

Oh and I was able to resurrect my old XPS Studio which I thought was on its last legs! The monitor lid died (again) and it's out of warranty so I never got it replaced, but it works when hooked up to an external monitor. It was running excruciatingly slow so I booted it up, deleted a bunch of old programs and found that it had been running on a power setting that was sandbagging the processor for a long time. It's "permanently" wired now so I changed it to a high performance plan and maxed the processor / cooling. Deleted a TON of old MP3s and videos since they're all backed up on external HDs. Then I noticed that there was an option to upgrade to Windows 10 for free until July! So I checked it out and after a few failed attempts it finally upgraded. The OS might be worse than Win 7 I dunno but it is running way faster and smoother now!

Since I can't install external programs on my work laptop without authorization, now I have something that I can again Smile

Yeah that looks pretty trick. I think being able to adjust where it's pointing can come in handy if you need to do any rearranging in the baby's room/area.

Infant Optics DXR-5 Portable Video Baby Monitor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0052QYLUM/re ... dxbA4W0SSK - this is the one we have. Whole house range, clear enough picture, great battery life when using VOX mode, auto white noise mute and some form of signal security. Because it is 2.4ghz it does conflict with wireless n routers, you have to set your router to a channel on the upper (or lower, I forget) extreme of the band to work around it but then it is fine. I think you will run into that with all 2.4ghz monitors though.

Edit - IMO temperature monitoring, remote camera angle adjustment and 2 way communication are all gimmicks. After a while I persuaded Stef to switch over to an audio only monitor just so she wouldn't feel compelled to constantly check on Rebecca.

I've used temperature monitoring and 2 way comms myself actually. We've had a few times where the baby's room got a good bit cooler than the thermostat was set at because we keep the door to her room closed and sometimes too much heat can escape through the windows.

With the 2 way comm, if one of us is in the baby's room and needs something they can always call out to the other person. Only really comes into play during the morning or when we're putting baby to sleep but it is helpful to not have to interrupt a feeding to get something.

Never felt the need for remote camera adjustment though. Neither of us check the video feed except when baby is crying or in the morning to check to see if she is awake.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 04-11-2016

Baby monitors arent nearly as necessary as you may think. I can count on one hand how many times we have used ours.
When baby needs you, s/he will let you know. Very quickly. Babies are built that way. They really arent needed unless you stick the baby in the basement and sleep on the third floor (or vice versa) and if you do, then stop.
Its easier and better to just keep the baby close-ish to you while it is sleeping.

If yous still think you need one, Id recommend waiting until the baby comes and you do in fact need one to get one. And if you do, get a cheap vtech (y0) audio only, and a d-link IP cam. cheaper and much more flexible.
We used the camera a ton when grace hit toddler age and would either get into stuff in her bedroom or play when she should be sleeping.
