Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Kaan - 07-29-2014 i used to ride a motorcycle EVERY DAY... cops hate when you dont have your registration. they ALL ended up in my wallet. the registration is larger and easier to find than my voter card in my wallet. also, i've never been ID to vote
Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - G.Irish - 07-29-2014 WRXtranceformed Wrote:The cop told me something else interesting; thieves now are going around to parking lots / garages at places of work, breaking in and stealing garage door openers and the registration, and then driving over to the house to rob it while you are at work.Interesting. We have a sensor on our garage door but we usually don't turn it on. I think maybe we need to start doing that. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 07-29-2014 Also, a stay has been granted on the DC Handgun Carry thing, so it is illegal again, please do not bring a gun to DC. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 08-11-2014 Finally settled on a pretty money security system / company after my usual massive research & stack ranking efforts. Self-installation to prevent shady installers from casing your home (or having access to your master password), fully wireless hardware with Alarm.com Android app integration, portable to any house and wireless-based so you can reinstall it anywhere as long as you receive cell signals. If anyone is thinking about switching their provider or setting a system up in the first place let me know and I can refer you to the guy I worked with...you get a decent discount on an already good price and I get a little bonus as well~ It will be nice to finally have a first line of defense at our home before the lethal one. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Evan - 08-11-2014 any home automation? zigbee, zwave? Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 08-11-2014 Evan Wrote:any home automation? zigbee, zwave?Yes all available as add ons with no additional monthly fees (other than I think $5.00 more / month for cameras if you opt for the in-app monitoring service, we are actually looking at other alternatives). It's one of the major reasons I went with this company, you can buy parts through them or the same parts separately on Amazon / Ebay. They will help walk you through how to add them through the system even if you didn't buy the parts through them. I may buy another motion sensor on Ebay for $25 shipped to add another layer of redundancy in one of our rooms, as well as a fire alarm. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 08-11-2014 I wanna upgrade to a cool automated / mobile controlled security system. But its hard to justify the increase in cost....I have my whole house pretty much covered for $29 month (Fire/entries/glassbreak). Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 08-11-2014 Honestly the automation & mobile control is cool but the most important thing is that your security system is connected to the dispatch centers through cellular towers. I could be wrong but I don't believe there is a single security provider that offers cellular signal at that price point (Time Warner gets close because they have cellular backup available, but then you are dealing with TW who jacks their rates up on a whim). If your system is run through landlines or through the internet, I would start shopping other providers simply to change that. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Beej - 08-11-2014 WRXtranceformed Wrote:I could be wrong but I don't believe there is a single security provider that offers cellular signal at that price point.Simplisafe is a cell-tower based service, as low as $15/mo with no contract. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 08-11-2014 yep....I do when we disconnected our home phone I needed an option, and that was the BRINKS GSM Cell add on. They wanted to charge me $300 for the cell box and up my monthly. I told em to cancel my service. Retention dept gave me the cell box and lowered my bill by $10 month. My system is all hardwired, have had it since we moved into the house in 2008. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 08-11-2014 Beej Wrote:You are right, but it also costs a lot more up front to buy the equipment. If you opt for their base package it only includes a base station, wireless keypad, motion sensor, one window/door sensor and a key fob for $230. Which is enough to maybe cover an apartment if you aren't on the ground level. Interactive monitoring is also optional. Their biggest benefit is no contract commitment.WRXtranceformed Wrote:I could be wrong but I don't believe there is a single security provider that offers cellular signal at that price point.Simplisafe is a cell-tower based service, as low as $15/mo with no contract. Trust me I weighed the economy of equipment vs. monthly monitoring fee for basically any security system you would want to look at. They all get their money out of you no matter what some way! Justin, nice. I am all for beating up retention departments for free stuff. I got my bill reduced and NFL Sunday Ticket for free for 2 out of the last 3 years  Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Beej - 08-11-2014 WRXtranceformed Wrote:You are right, but it also costs a lot more up front to buy the equipment. It's worth mentioning that the refurb'd systems can save you a chunk of change on the hardware. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 08-11-2014 Interesting comment too about Simplisafe on a review site: "For $14 you get nothing. They charge an extra $5 just to notify you in case of a alarm goes off. You still can’t go online and use the system like to change a code unless you upgrade to their top plan. The service is very poor and they could care less." You can see why this was so stressful to me, there are so many hidden costs, fees, etc they don't tell you about with some of these companies. The one I settled on had some of the best pricing, flexibility best customer service out there. I also beat up the sales rep pretty good and got $645 worth of equipment for $99 (Amazon / Ebay piecing it together would have been about $330). I'm at $42.99 per month with the ability to add as much equipment to that as I want (zwave/fire/glass/water), interactive monitoring w/ app, hardware warranty, etc. The only real downside is I chose the three year agreement vs. the 1 year available, but it's fine for us because we can take it anywhere with us if we end up moving out of state (may happen in the next few years). Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 08-11-2014 Beej Wrote:Yeah the proprietary note is interesting...meaning if the service sucks and you aren't happy you're stuck with all of that equipment you had to buy. I liked the fact that I was buying GE equipment because a lot of the major service providers use it as well...when our contract runs out I can shop around (or use the threat of shopping around to beat them up on my monthly rate).WRXtranceformed Wrote:You are right, but it also costs a lot more up front to buy the equipment. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Beej - 08-11-2014 Meh, I don't agree with that comment, and it's wording is misleading. You still get a phone call from the call center if the alarm goes off (provide safe word if it's false, donezo). $5 if you want SMS/email notification, but they're not all that useful. You can change the code from the keypad or your local computer (transfer settings via USB key). $15/mo for basic, cell-based service (which like all 99% of people need), $20 to add text/email notifications, and $25 for online configuration, smartphone app access, and "secret" alerts. As for the service, well...there's not a whole lot to it. I'm with you on being sick of researching it - just started off as refuting your "can't get cell service for less than $29/mo" when you can for half that. That, and I thought Simplisafe was one of the more straightforward pitches in the industry. A significant downside is the lack of home automation stuff, but honestly that whole thing has a ways to go anyway. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 08-11-2014 Yeah ha I hear you, perhaps I should have started statement with "with all things being equal" from a service and equipment perspective. I personally didn't consider services in my search that didn't have automation / app functionality; I travel so much for work that I want to have that personal touchpoint to my home. You sound like you have been going through or went through this fun exercise just like me! Edit: I just priced out my hardware and service with Simplisafe for funsies. Over a 3 year period it is almost exactly the same price out of pocket when you factor in equipment costs but without the automation ability. The benefit you do get is that you can walk away from their service, but then you also aren't protected if they decide to jack up their rates since you aren't locked into an agreement. The app also looks a little weaker than the Alarm.com app, but their service looks like another solid alternative if you are going the DIY route! Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Mike - 08-12-2014 i don't value the cost of a security system for what it provides, but i am in the market for some fake security cameras... it's all about deterrent to me and $25 for four sound about right. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - davej - 08-12-2014 I've been kicking around the idea of cameras, but ones that are real. Anyone have experiences to share? Took a quick look at a couple but they are wired, not real interested in running coax all over the house. Hoping to find a decent wifi system with remote viewing Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 08-12-2014 If you just want something to look around with I have heard good things about those foscam ip cameras. Probably gonna put one in Averie's room once we switch her outta the crib Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Evan - 08-12-2014 I have 2 HD foscams , 2 SD foscams , and 4 Dlink SD cameras. I like the Dlinks the best by far. They have great zero config cloud integration that doesnt require port forwarding, so remote viewing is much easier. they also come up in the viewer instantly. The HD foscams are sharper, and have 2 way audio, so they make for good babycams, but are much slower and laggy to come up, and a pain in the dick to set for remote viewing. I havent even bothered to hook up any of the foscams at my new place. when my new zigbee/zwave box gets here, Im going to set up some automated video record actions when someone comes home, knocks on door, etc. |
