Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 07-07-2014

Being a bullpup I don't think you're ever going to get a great trigger but one of Bill's triggers is always the right move. That said, honestly...I think the tavor will be the most popular civilian bullpup ever...which is to say not popular at all, and will be outsold by every other conventional semi automatic by at least 2:1.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Sully - 07-09-2014

Ok, so I finally got a kick in the ass from rex and got my concealed carry permit. I'm thinking of eventually picking up a m&p shield but that'll be down the road when I have extra monies laying around.

Anyway, now the girlfriend wants me to go take a "class" of some sort. I told her I want to go to the range with people I know who know guns very well. ie: the Elsa's, and possibly other mm people but she thinks the class would be so much better and thinks her parents would be more at ease if I took said class. She also plans to eventually get hers I guess.

Why or why not should I do this? I'm not saying I don't need to learn my shit, but why can't I just annoy Rex for a few months at the range? What can I say to her to get her to chill out. Maybe introduce her to Rexy and have him explain why her argument is invalid if it is in fact so.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 07-09-2014

What is her argument exactly?

If you took a good concealed carry course, you learned most if not all of what you need to know about firearm safety and state specific laws. Other than that, a lot of range time with a few different types of firearms and someone who knows how to handle them should do you just fine. I'm not going to dissuade you from taking more classes (I am actually looking at several tactical / defensive carbine courses right now) because knowledge is power. What you really need now more than anything is time at the range with the firearm of your choice so that you can get familiar with it.

Also curious why her parents are involved in the decision...

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Sully - 07-09-2014

Her argument is that the people leading the class are properly trained. My argument is that I know Rex and feel comfortable with him knowing his shit.

As far as the class to get the permit, it was a joke, 15 minute video pretty much telling what things are called on the gun and some common sense stuff and then a 20 question multiple choice test.

With that said, I don't think that's all I should know but I planned to talk to Rex during our range/cleaning time about laws and other good stuff.

Of course, this will all be news to Rex that he signed up for this Wink

Her parents are not currently involved. Part of her argument is that her parents wouldn't be comfortable if I didn't have "proper" training. Her dad actually has guns(including a S&W .40 that was in the center console the last time I was in the car with them) and they want her to get her concealed as well I believe.

Wow, that's really all it takes in VA? That would make me nervous up there! NC has a mandatory 8 hour course and you learn everything from the gun parts, to physically handling and reloading several different types of handguns (with snap caps), to laws, to situations about when deadly force can be used / not used and legal implications, etc. etc. I sat through it twice when my wife took her class because some of the laws changed since I took mine (you can now carry in more places here, including bars as long as you aren't drinking) and it's good to stay up to date.

If you were close to here I would take you to the range a couple of times and Rex does indeed know his stuff so I'm sure he would be willing to do the same. But if the CC class up there sucks that bad you may want to consider taking a basic handgun operations, safety and tactics course. It would be a fun time and you would learn a lot.

Situation / legal scenarios are REALLY important to know (emphasis on REALLY) because a CWP is obviously not a license to kill. And in this state, even if someone breaks into your home it does not necessarily automatically give you the right to take their life without legal consequence.

Now, if you were in SOUTH Carolina...you can pretty much shoot to kill unwanted guests and even someone on your NEIGHBOR'S property who isn't supposed to be there

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 07-09-2014

Tell your girlfriend go to live in some commie state if she's so concerned about FREE MEN exercising their natural, God-Given rights.

If she wants some piece of paper from the NRA that states "Rex Knows Which End The Boolits Come Outta" then she can pay for me to get it. But really guys, gun safety is easy:

RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY

RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

That's it, folks. Follow those four rules and you'll never shoot anything you weren't sure absolutely had it comin'.

Also: " to situations about when deadly force can be used / not used and legal implications," no one will actually tell you this. I know it seems like they do, but it's always proceeded by "I am not a lawyer and I am especially not your lawyer and anything I say that seems like legal advice definitely isn't and you shouldn't listen."

Use common sense, avoid conflict, and use deadly force only when you or the life of a loved one is in grave peril. Thus endeth the lesson. No class is going to tell you any different, they'll just use more words and charge you more dollars.

The only thing I would add is to Rule IV: Be sure of your target AND WHAT IS BEYOND YOUR TARGET. You are responsible for anything your round hits, whether it's what you were aiming at or not.

No class is going to teach you anything more than common sense as far as firearms for self defense go. Retreat if at all possible, use a less lethal alternative if you feel safe/comfortable doing so and meet force with like force. One place where instruction may help is having an experienced shooter critique your stance, grip, shooting technique, etc. When I carried at the state level I regularly shot instructor qualifying scores. Now that I'm a federal officer I've been amazed at how much more I have improved having instruction from federal firearms instructors.

If I could give you a few pieces of advice for your training, spend as much time practicing with the gun unloaded and dummy rounds as you do on a live range. If you are a good shot that's great, you will continue to shoot well, but practice draws from concealement, clearing malfunctions, emergency reloads, etc. Another good way to practice at the range is when you are loading the magazine, throw a dummy round in the middle somewhere random. When you draw and fire a few rounds and the gun goes "click" practice immediately hitting the bottom of the magazine, pulling the slide back to clear the dummy round and getting your front sight back on target as fast as you can. It sounds elementary but the more you practice it the less you will ever be surprised by a misfire or a stovepipe, etc.

I'm in training until August but after I get back I'd love to get together at a range with Rex and some MM'ers and do some shooting/basic instruction.

I knew you would put it nicely Wink

I think it's just she doesn't know you guys and just hears me saying you're my friends. Idk how to convince her differently but once I get a gun, or once I'm back in the burg (if I move back) I will get together with you guys and have you critique my shooting/drawing stuff like that. Then I can just tell her I paid for a private class and I won't tell her who you guys are until after. Maybe that'll change her mind.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 07-09-2014

Werent Rexand kaan carbine Instructors at some point. She never said what kind of instructor.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JPolen01 - 07-09-2014

Count me in for a instruction day at the range. I kept telling Rex I would go out with him and learn but I never got around to it.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 07-09-2014

No point if you stay in Maryland.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JPolen01 - 07-09-2014

Learning never hurts

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Sully - 07-09-2014

Can you rent guns at the range that you (I guess Rex) go to? I would be interested in maybe something this summer but not sure I'll have mine by then. If everyone got together, I could definitely say it was a class lol.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 07-10-2014

Colonial rents guns. I would assume most ranges do now. Just selection will be the biggest difference.

I think Top Gun rents, but I have a plethora of blasters at your disposal. In any caliber you like, as long as it's 9mm.

Figured. Just didn't want to assume

NP. Guns exist to be shot. I don't buy wallhangers.

Sorry, I just get real tired of people pretending firearms are some kind of fucking space enigma, beyond mere mortal comprehension. They aren't. They're very simple tools that have been around longer than this country and have basically remained unchanged in fundamental operation for a hundred fuckin' years. I'm not even joking. I could take a brand new VP9 go back in time to The Year Of Our Lord Nineteen Hundred and One, and hand it to John Moses Browning (pbuh). He'd look at it, pop off 15 rounds, and say "Someone stole my barrel linkage idea...what's this frame made out of?"

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Sully - 07-10-2014

It's all good lol, I know you have a eloquent way of cutting through the BS Wink

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - V1GiLaNtE - 07-10-2014

Count me in for said range day. It's been quite sometime since I've shot up some pumpkins/watermelons/innocent by standing common household items.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - davej - 07-10-2014

I'd be in if someone has something they can spare. (Besides, a second set of prints on a gun is always good, right??)

All I have is the shotgun I bought in junior high. Maybe up next is an MM day at the flying rabbit?
