So if you preorder the s7 or s8 edge, you get a free gear vr. Now I was probably going to go with the s7 anyway but kind of want the edge. Only thing I'm not sure about is they did away with the + models and just made the edge 5.5" instead of 5.7 like the plus or 5.1 like the normal. Not sure I want to go any bigger. I already have trouble reaching everywhere on the s5 with one hand. Really like to hold one which would be tough on a preorder.

Anyone think a free vr headset is worth it? Not sure I'd ever really use it after the initial what is this thing all about use.

Are there any other phones I should be looking at? I really like my s5 for the most part. It's a little laggy but definitely still usable for an almost two year old android. I'm not big on apple and never adopted their other tech so doubt I'll wait for the 7 although I'd consider it if it was out now.

Very timely, I was about to call the Verizon store and find out when they were going to get them in stock so I can wrap my hands around them. For me the Gear VR is just a novelty and it would probably sit in a drawer somewhere for years. I'm only really interested in PS4-based VR sets whenever that comes out. I'm still rocking a refurb S4 that is running OK but it's fairly slow and picture quality is really rough compared to the new camera phones like my wife's new Note. It looks like the specs are going to be identical between the Edge and S7, the Edge will have a larger battery and presumably more battery life. Frankly I can't deal with large phablets/phones with as much as I travel so I have a feeling I will gravitate toward the smaller S7...but if the Edge is pocketable without taking up my whole pocket I will consider it

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Ken - 02-22-2016

I have an S6 edge and the Edge screen is nearly 100% gimmick. From what i have read they have improved it slightly but if i were you two i would just go with the standard S7. I really like my S6 and wish i had just sprung for the more storage instead of the Edge (although the S7 brought back microSD storage so that's nice.)

Also glad to see they brought back the water proofing to the S7, i took my old S5 with me through tough mudder and it was nice to be able to just take pictures along the way.

That's what I have heard as well so that is great feedback. My wife also pointed out that it's harder to find a good case with the Edge that protects the whole thing and that the older versions had issues with someone accidentally touching the edge and causing weird scrolling stuff to occur, etc. I think Chris has / had an Edge so maybe he will weigh in here on his thoughts.

Apparently both models will only be offered in 32GB internal storage (which is a lot) but yeah the microSD slot up to 200GB is huge! I'm just really curious to see what the battery life is going to look like, especially since they are internal only batteries now.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 02-22-2016

Yea I read they made some improvements to the edge apps to make it more useful but I'm still not sure I would ever use it and feel like I'd be constantly hitting it by accident. Definitely seems like a "next big thing" gimmick. I like that the edge has a bigger battery. After a year and half, my battery is shot and I can't even make it through a day now. I'd like to see the two side by side in person and hold both but it seems like a waste to not get a free vr even if I never use it lol.

Also, idk how it works if you're on vzw edge but it you preorder it at bestbuy, you get the vr and a 25gb SD card

Edit: think it was a 32gb card and they were saying the value was $25

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 02-22-2016

I have the edge. Functional use of the screen is near zero, but I love the look of a nearly bevel-less screen. I get a lot of compliments on it, saying the screen is really cool. My wife has the S6 and her phone feels really clunky to me, so I'm not sure I could go back. I do have a hard time using it with my left hand though - I guess I'm not as flexible or whatever cause my fat fingers brush the edge occasionally. I have no problems with my right hand though [insert joke]. I've been half considering getting the S7 edge, because I reclined my La-Z-Boy onto my phone and created a hairline fracture on the screen. If I were to upgrade, I'd likely get an edge again.

Interesting thanks for the feedback....i'll have to mess around with it at the store and see how I like it!

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 02-22-2016

So you don't hit anything with your Palm while reaching across the screen or anything?

With my right hand, no. I occasionally do with my left hand, but I only ever use that if I'm carrying something with my right hand.

Note I have pretty meaty paws, but relatively short fingers.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 02-22-2016

Do you use a case with it? Have you had any issues finding a good one?

It's not that often but it is a pain in the ass when it does happen.

That being said, it is a real looker, i get compliments on it a lot. Just not sure that compliments on my phone offset paying more for a near useless gimmick. Also, i can't tell you how many times i take the phone out from my pocket and look at the back of the phone. Sounds dumb but it just feels like it should be facing the other way in your hand.

WRXtranceformed Wrote:Do you use a case with it? Have you had any issues finding a good one?

I don't... but I've seen a handful with cases. My read is they probably don't do a decent job of protecting part of the long edges because you can't cover the screen.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 02-22-2016

Spigen makes (well will make) a nice looking minimalist style case and not sure but I believe it uses a metal trim ring which would help if it falls on its back or corner. I feel like it could also make it more natural to hold since as Ken said, the rounded edge is on the front. But yea I don't see any case protecting the screen that well

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 02-22-2016

Snatched up a 6p, 64GB, in gold ($50 off plus $50 Best Buy gift card)

The gold is nice, not like its polished gold or anything. Love the finger print scanner on the back. Snappy, and android like it was meant to be.
The size is something I have had to get used to, but i am growing fonder of it everyday.

With my 6P I switched over to Fi, starting off with 1GB cause its not like I get penalized for going over.

So far, I approve. Had the phone shipped to Disney during my vacation, plugged in the sim, ready to roll.

Only issue I experienced was something that many do when porting their Google Voice number over to Fi.
SMS wasn't working, I could receive using Hangouts, and could send using Messenger when I added something to the hidden subject line. Long story short, escalated, talked to someone who actually knew WTF was going on, unlike anyone I have ever spoken to with Verizon, and my SMS issues were resolved the following day.

No issues with call quality over WIFI, or signal with the TMO & Sprint networks. All else fails, and it starts to suck, I slap in a Verizon Sim.

What is Fi?

Fi = combo of open Wifi, Tmobile, & Sprint networks. $20 unlimited call/SMS/MMS, $10 for every gig of data you use.

Don't use your data, you get $1 back for every .10GB you don't use, same for going over, charged $1 for every .10GB you go over.

Thank you. The last time they started with this fi thing, I Googled to avoid the "how do you not know about this flaming" I googled, still don't really understand it

Had it for...damn, like 6 months now at least. Fuckin' love it.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Jake - 02-22-2016

Huh. That could be worth trying, especially given coverage where I live/work/play most of the time.

Not sure how it'd do for track weekends though. Are T-Mo and Sprint still The Epic Suckitude that they always have been when you leave a city?
