Re: Automotive News Discussion - D_Eclipse9916 - 01-22-2016

For a while there I wasn't very excited about any new cars. There are a TON of new cars that look like absolute blasts. Great day to be alive, bad day to be broke.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-22-2016

Yeah lots of exciting metal out there although most of it ain't cheap. I feel like the Alfa 4C is the ideal car for me on paper but I've been feeling lukewarm about it for awhile. Maybe I need to skate on over to the dealership to check one out. But lawd if the GT4 doesn't give me the vapors. That might be the one, but after I drive a NSX that might change..

Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 01-25-2016

Lighter than the Macan....the "S" version is going to be a blast to drive:

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-25-2016

Yeah that F-Pace seems like it'll be a home run for Jag. Cheaper than the Macan by a decent margin with almost as much power. The Macan Turbo has about 20 more horsepower but costs about $20k more (to start). The F-Pace doesn't have a DCT but I think most customers wouldn't really care too much, the Macan is the only SUV with a DCT anyway.

My mom is kinda in the market for a luxo SUV, I'll have to direct her to check this out in addition to the Lexus NX.

Interested to hear your thoughts on the Lexus NX. I know others here hate it.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-26-2016

I really liked the NX. Of all the small luxury SUVs we looked at, the NX really was the best value for the money. Several features that aren't available on any of the competitors (heated and cooled front seats, heated and reclining rear seats, haptic touch pad) for a price that was on the lower end for cars in that class. The fit and finish was excellent and the quality of materials was very good.

Performance wise it's tuned to be mildly sporty but more comfortable. The X3 and Macan handle much better. Q5 with sport package was better there too. The 2.0t was adequate but naturally no match for the more powerful competitors.

But for someone who isn't going to tow, and would be fine with the power (and styling), it really is a great car. The F-pace may end up being a better value for a bigger who wants more motor.

God the NX is awful.

It was styled by an angry blind person and that touchmouseshit is impossible to use while driving.

Sorry, I just really hate Lexus.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 01-26-2016

I'm in the like it camp for the NX based on the F Sports I've seen around here, the red / black interior looks especially sharp. It's a shame the performance doesn't match the appearance though...all of the reviews I've read are that it is pretty lackluster when compared to others in its segment. Maybe they'll drop a tune for it or something, but i wouldn't hold my breath based on other aftermarket options I've seen for that community

Yeah I'm not a fan of Lexus's disjointed lines desing language in general, but I like it better on the SUV's. I thought the haptic touchpad was pretty easy to use and intuitive but I'd probably prefer iDrive or MMI if I had a choice.

Yeah the NX could use a higher performance trim but at the same time the vast majority of luxury cuv buyers roll with the base engine. If I see 20 X3's maybe 2 or 3 of them will be 35i's.

But that's kinda always been Lexus's MO. Their mainstream products prioritize features and comfort over performance. Even the F series prioritize ride comfort over outright performance.

2017 718 Boxster (S)

Not sure if I like the rear or not. Those tail lights definitely don't win me over. They seem similar to the all white tails from the GT3.

Biggest change is dropping from the flat 6 to a turbo 4 cylinder. Base Boxster will receive a turbo 2.0L w/ 300hp and the S will get a turbo 2.5L with 350hp. Manual trans is stock with a PDK option. That's pretty big news seeing as most of the Porsche line up is going straight to PDK minus the GT4. Pricing starts at $56,000 and $68,400 respectively.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - davej - 01-27-2016

if you drive in reverse, people might think a Dart is coming at them.

Shit, I can't unsee that now

But with that kind of performance I'm onboard with the 718. I can only imagine how fast the 718 can be once tuners crank up the boost. I do wonder what that means for the GT4 but I imagine they'll just keep rolling with that 3.8L flat-6.

Itll be interesting to see if Porsche can deliver an exhilarating drive train with boost.

That was my first thought - in a few years you may be able to scoop a base boxster, throw a tune at it, and have a potentially very quick vert. Might not even need to pay the premium for an S.

That's like the 335i guys saying they throw a tune on them and they are as good as the e90 m3. Nope, not even close. Engine dynamics are getting better (gt350/GT4) and worse (F30 M3).

Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 01-27-2016

I didn't say it would be equal to the S. It might be pretty good though. The 335i v m3 camp is dumb. Those are entirely two different engines let alone the other differences in the cars. Here we are talking about a .5L difference plus PASM suspension on the S which I imagine is pretty nice.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-27-2016

I think with a tune, exhaust, intake, etc. a base 718 might be able to match a 718 S in a straight line. Won't be a match on brakes, suspension, and probably drivability. At the very least people will end up with a base 718 that is faster than the 981 S.

I just hope this doesn't mean that the GT4 was a one year only deal like the 1M was. Prices were just starting to settle down.

What are they going for?

Hard to say what people are actually buying them for, but I've seen them advertised for $5-30k over MSRP. I'm thinking a lot of them were going for $10k-20k over MSRP a few months ago. Now you could probably get one with a few hundred miles very close to MSRP. If there is more supply coming throughout the 2016 calendar year I could see them going consistently for MSRP. That said, 991 GT3's are still pulling a premium so who knows.

My feeling is if I'm gonna pay at or near MSRP I'm going to get a car exactly the way I want it. Otherwise I'd wait until a little depreciation hits. Only thing is that the Porsche GT cars usually hold their value so I don't know how much of discount one could expect on the used market.

4 cyl boxster makes me

Enjoy your modern beetle convertible. This is a turrible development in the automotive world.... at least Ferrari was the first one in with the turbos.
