I uh, kind of like that one. One owner since new, every record. That's a hell of a lot nicer than the E39.

RE: WTB: Fast 4 Door - D_Eclipse9916 - 11-03-2017

We had an XK and XJ growing up and there is a different "warmth" to the feel of the steering and chassis compared to the luxurious Japanese cars. I can attest to the small leg room in the rear seats of the XJ.....

If it's for bombing around, probably a ton of fun. As I get older I would probably prefer one of these over an equivalent M5. If you are going down the luxobarge route, you might as well have luxobarge instead of trying to make that 4000lb+ machine handle.

RE: WTB: Fast 4 Door - Jake - 11-03-2017

"The Draguar" sounds like an epic car to include in next year's Pride parade.

Agreed with DJ on the 4k lb battlecruiser idea. Every time I see an XJR I think how it'd be pretty sweet for road trips and cruising to work. Same as when I borrowed my friend's E55 AMG. Doesn't really want to get up and dance but will eat up miles like nobody's business.

I would have expected at least 1 person on here to post this.

Oh my god buy that.

RE: WTB: Fast 4 Door - JPolen01 - 11-03-2017

The time to buy your SS is now, not in a couple of years. https://jalopnik.com/this-is-really-your-last-chance-to-score-a-huge-discoun-1820113138

It’s a great deal, but I really don’t want a $500+ a month car payment on top of the CX9’s payment. I swore after the Mustang I wouldn’t buy another new car due to the crazy ass depreciation; Chevrolet SS at 20% off may make sense though, especially if manual trans.

RE: WTB: Fast 4 Door - JPolen01 - 11-03-2017

I went right to cars.com to look at some. There are about 10 manual trans examples within 50 miles of Ellicott City. The discounts aren't as steep as the screenshots from Jalop, but they are about $10k off MSRP.

RE: WTB: Fast 4 Door - JustinG - 11-03-2017

Great investigative reporting as usual Jalop....screen shots of Autotrader....where all available discounts are shown and you qualify for maybe 1. Good work.

I just don’t want to spend 40k dollars on a car. Gonna stick with the original plan here.

They are not holding value particularly well. Assuming I bought it at 40g, that car would cost me roughly 15k over the next 4 years or so + a fuck ton more insurance. I really want to pick up a 2015 (the first year with the magnetic suspension) in 2019 for 20 something, not spend 40g now.

And I really want it in an auto, which would make the resale game that much worse.

So fill me in on these BMW gurus - https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/cto/d/1991-bmw-m5-dinan/6369889459.html

They're fun and make good noises. The S38 engine is based on the engine that BMW put in the M1. It takes peanut butter oil (20W-50?) so it reeeeeally doesn't want to get moving until things thin out on a cold day. At 101k the engine will not need a rebuild, but closer to 150k it may be something to consider. I've heard they are finicky to put higher miles on, but I've also driven some un-rebuilt examples at 140-180k and they've been fine. The engine sounds great with a catback (they all have ITBs).

Not super luxurious inside, heated seats are the biggest novelty item. Steering is kinda slow as it's a box, not rack/pinion. Front end suspension is made up of about 11 pieces that involve bushings and you cannot cheap out on replacement - do the entire thing and get a good brand, or it'll all blow back out in short order. These cars are like any other BMW and sensitive to blown out bushings - they'll get wandery if stuff is bad.

It's a good size chassis - a modern 3-series is the same size exterior - so it's big enough to haul four people but small enough to be fun on a back road.

Dinan sells all sorts of modifications, and each one has an assigned point value. Once you have earned enough points, you earn the badge for the car to say it's actually "Dinan modified." But, find out what all has been done to make it have that "status" as some of the items can be kind of hokey.

I dunno, I'd do it if it's not a shitpile car. My E34 was an awful example (ish) but I miss it and would have a nice one back in a heartbeat. And with this one being an M5 (OMG last of the hand-built!) it will retain value more than a 540.

Fucking BMW owners.

So as off the rails and crazy as this may have gone, I really want to refocus on the original plan, with a focus on automatics only and no more than 6g. Firm.

I don’t have any interest in spending 20 / 30 / 40g on a bespoke / rare/ new 3rd car that is going to sit outside and be subjected to door dings, toddlers and winter salt. It makes it really hard for me to enjoy a car when I am constantly worrying about it getting screwed up every time I take it out. An SS is more than I am comfortable swinging on one income right now.

I am not ready to get rid of the Mustang or Talon. Those both have manuals; I want something Stephanie is comfortable driving in a pinch.

I do want something British or German. Yes it will need repairs. Yes I can afford them and am willing to do them, I just don’t want to do them all at once to get through a MD state inspection.

Flame on.

RE: WTB: Fast 4 Door - .RJ - 11-05-2017

I'm still digging the Jaguar idea. Seems to check all the boxes and leave some overhead for repairs. An old E38 or E39 isnt as cool.

I am still holding out a sliver of hope for 4g Blue XJR guy in Reston. He was “on a business trip.” 33% chance Nigerian scammer, 33% chance computer illiterate old man, 33% chance the car is currently being put back together and he is stalling, 1% chance crab person.

RE: WTB: Fast 4 Door - .RJ - 11-05-2017

It seems like there are enough of them out there that you can find a nice one, probably more common than a 60k mile manual trans E91. I'll assume there's a Jaguar XJR forum, too.

RE: WTB: Fast 4 Door - Jake - 11-05-2017

+1 on the Jag.

I liked Lauren's 540i when I lived with her and Joey, but I don't think it's fast enough or unique enough to keep you super interested.

WTB: Fast 4 Door - ViPER1313 - 11-05-2017

So the wheels are terrible and the headlights are yellowed like every e class of this vintage.... but ? https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/cto/d/great-price-2001-e55-amg/6372476435.html

RE: WTB: Fast 4 Door - WRXtranceformed - 11-05-2017

I'd get an old Jag over an old Mercedes, but that's just me over here sipping tea like kermit
So I can bring some value to this thread, I will add that the Jaguar forums are very good, so if you're serious you should definitely go check them out and read up on XJRs. You might even find some for sale
