Taylor, maybe this is why you got the car for such a low price. Luckily, I think the Miata is a great car for a shadetree mechanic to cut their teeth on. You've probably learned a lot more than you really wanted to know about working on cars. My vote is to run a proper compression/leak down test. If the problem is the rings, I say just keep driving it.

ugh, I got one of those fraud alert texts last Friday night so my credit card got cancelled. Then I discovered my backup card was deactivated due to inactivity. I spent the long holiday weekend having my sugar momma pay or paying for things in what little cash I had like some chump. Hooray for carrying the equivalent of thousands of dollars of credit in one little plastic card!

Alrighty! So I washed her for the first time with an actual bucket and soap and she shined up nice. Lots of built up wax from where I did a crappy job after Summit. Changed the oil with Rotella T6 and a Fram filter. I also picked up some Marvel Mystery Oil I might try depending on how the engine handles the T6. I wanted to put the new Valve Cover Gasket on before I tested the compression, but I decided to do something correctly for once and do it last so the gasket maker can cure over night.
Compression numbers are better. I think I put too much oil in 1 and 2 on the wet tests. Still not great, but oh well.

There is a soft puffing, gurgle noise from the airbox at idle, but it is not a miss. I've read that this could be from the intake being so disgusting, which mine is. I really need to pull it off and soak it in something to clean the insides out. I'm excited to see what it's like once the valve cover is sealed up and it has high quality oil in it.

Also, +1 for carrying cash. Sometimes it's just easier to pay cash or when you need to split something or gamble and such. Idk what these crazy payments apps are but they sound inconvenient. I'd rather have cash then have another online holding account that I have to remember to go pull the money from. Which probably isn't how they work but like Joey said, my lawn, get off of it.

Some are, some aren't, apparently they don't have some kind of valve in it or something. I don't remember, all I know is I got bitched out at work because that's the only filter we had for the guys truck AND THERE WAS NO WAY IN HELL WE COULD EXPECT HIM TO BUY THAT PIECE OF SHIT. Sigh.

Your car will love you a lot longer if you stop throwing additives into it. The only thing that belongs in an engine is oil (and in my opinion, the viscosity the manufacturer called for, not what you read on a forum.) Is it running well? If it is, stop fucking with it, fill it up with whatever oil the manufacturer calls for, and close the hood. You will get to enjoy it for years before you have to worry about those compression numbers. If you keep fucking with it, running fixes in a can through it, you are going to blow it up, then you won't be enjoying a damn thing.

What if the manufacturer calls for two different weights? Honda says 5w40 or whatever t6 is, is cool for "extreme" climates. We know how extreme VA is

I had this argument with some folks at my previous employer. It provides me no benefit, I can instantly pay friends with no fees from my PayPal acct, CC, or my bank account. Deposited in my bank account typically the next day. Also having the ability to pay for things using PayPal on web purchases with PayPal fraud and CC fraud backing me is beneficial.
For me it fills no gap, but we live in a time where new and shiny are the norm, I also see no point in Snapchat or twitter for that matter. But I got onto Facebook when you still needed a .EDU email address. Those were the days!

If they call for it for the climate? Cool. If they say 5w30 and you are putting 15w40 in it because you mistakenly think high oil pressure and long engine life are the same thing, you are gonna have a bad time.
I still don't know why people think they know more about what oil their car likes than manufacturers who test the motors in the most extreme conditions possible and then spec an oil...

It matter a lot for a Miata, both oil filter and oil quality. Only use a Mazda filter on a Miata.

I was wondering that today. I only run Toyota filters on my truck and Toyota fluids. I buy the filters by the case. I'll run by the mazda place and order a case soon. I grabbed the fram because it was what they had at Advance (No Napa stores within decent distance) and it has the texture on the edge to make it easy to get off. I hope everyone is okay with where the Miata sits now. I'll give myself a little pat on the back for fixing this mess so far even if it's not good enough for you guys. :bootyshake:

Why did you put Rotella in a Miata? Drain that shit out ASAP. Use regular oil that the manual calls for, 10w-30. Throw away the Fram filter. You should only use the Mazda filter on a Miata. It's designed for a reason.
