Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - D_Eclipse9916 - 04-14-2016 RawrImAMonster Wrote:I would say the exact opposite. LS motors aren't high strung and they tend to run forever under normal circumstances. There's a reason why you see tons of f-bodies for sale with 200k plus on the original motor. Not going to argue without facts but if they are run hard they should be refreshed at 100k miles if the motor is out. Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - Tyler.M - 04-14-2016 So, we'll ignore the big gaping hole of the motor for now and move on to other things. I'll update on that as it goes along. Since this will be off the road for a month or two, I'm going to do some upgrades I've been meaning to get around to on it. First is the suspension. The problem with this car is that aftermarket support is drying up, quick in terms of suspension solutions. 3 or 4 years ago you pretty much had Pedders. Now, that they're defunct, you have a combination of Lovells, Whiteline and Kings suspension setups running around. Lovells is the second most loved, so I'm going to go with a package that has lovells springs, Koni shocks and strucks and various bushings and such. No coil overs since I think it's overkill for what I want to do. Ordering the package this weekend from kollarracing.com (most likely, they've been the most helpful so far). Should give a mild 3/4in drop which is about all you want do on these cars-wheel wells are tight. I'll be move to 9.0 - 9.5inch wide tires on the rear (275's with mild fender roll, would like wider, but that's about all I can go) to help hook up some of the power I plan to make so dropping it much further than that will cause some issues with rubbing in the rear. I'll add the parts list once I finalize everything. Anyone know anything about whiteline? They seem to have the most comprehensive list of parts/bushings but I'm not sure about their quality. Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - ScottyB - 04-15-2016 i just went through a Whiteline quality control situation on my 2.5RS a couple months ago. i have their strut tops on the front end, they're kind of a unique part in that its a hybrid of a normal rubber strut top but offset like a camber plate. because of the weird nature of its production they've had some teething issues with the bearings wearing out. i thought i missed the bullet, but mine started popping and cracking last summer. aside from that, the part worked great and i pushed them pretty hard in rallycross. i took a youtube video, pictures, and sent all my purchase info over to Whiteline USA with about a month to spare on their 3 year warranty (phew! close call there). i had a response and promise for a replacement within the day. 4 days later i had a newer-version strut top kit at my front door, free of charge compliments of Fedex. i'm still on the old strut tops (the noise is still there too, but whatever) and the new strut tops look very good in quality. i have a feeling they'll fix the issue for good. for normal bushings with no moving parts, i'd be even more fine with their stuff. Whiteline is a big player and as a result their customer service is pretty robust. i'd have no problem using their stuff particularly as they're Aussie based in the first place...so fitment to your aussie car should be excellent. Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - Tyler.M - 04-15-2016 good to hear. their bushing kits are the most complete on the market right now so I may go with them Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - Tyler.M - 04-18-2016 So, decided to go the LS3 crate motor route. Also doing a full suspension with some stiffer springs to reduce the "squat" you get under heavy acceleration. I'll be close or above 500 hp, with my CAI, headers and exhaust once it's all said and done. I'm essentially putting a miata's worth of power into my car. It's time to do some legitimate driving lessons with this thing. 500hp is quite a bit. Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - WRXtranceformed - 04-18-2016 Go big or go home! Nice Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - JPolen01 - 04-18-2016 Aww yisss Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - Tyler.M - 04-19-2016 So, suspension set ups. Suspensions are funny as in, I don't quite understand them, yet. The first big question is coilovers or just stiffer springs and better shocks/struts. Coilovers may be too aggressive for my application but the adjustability of them is very attractive. Honestly, since I rarely see track days, they seem like over-kill, but I am considering it. Besides that, bushings will be replaced with poly-u, as will sway bar endlinks and a diff mount insert. Some say to avoid going with a thicker sway bar since it actually increases understeer but I'm not sure if I'll go that route. Price wise, Pedders has a coilover kit that is 1500 bucks, just for those. The other spot I'm looking at is 1400 for springs and struts with some bushings, and 2200 for springs and shocks, sway bars and the whole thing. The coilover kit seems pretty attractive for what you get considering the other options are already pushing 1500 for less advanced suspension options. Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - ScottyB - 04-21-2016 for a street car, do you intend to corner balance the car for that last 2% of max cornering performance or are you seeking a very specific ride height that may change with the seasons? otherwise a properly matched shock/spring combo should do great. coilovers sound cool until you remember you might want to align the car every time you change ride heights (if its a big height change) and if you drive the car in any winter slop your shock collars are going to start corroding and seizing up unless you're getting some very good quality stuff. just a general pain the ass unless you're after those first 2 things, from my observation from friends having coilovers. i would be VERY suspect of any coilover kit under 2 grand, the long term quality won't be there and the "adjustability" of any multi position shock they include will be weak at best...its just an attractive marketing proposition with crappy real world results. there's a reason those other kits seem to have less bells and whistles for a higher price. sways don't increase understeer if the correct front/rear bar size balance is maintained. they're just a tuning tool so misuse/mismatch on one end will throw the cornering attitude off. really fat bars can make the ride start to suffer on shitty pavement since a big sway is trying to link the movement of one wheel to the opposite side, but again that's on the extreme end. if the bars are recommended to work with the other kit components its probably advised to use them. if not, then wait and put them on later...you may find the handling works fine for your needs with the stock bars. Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - Tyler.M - 04-26-2016 So, found an engine builder in town that specializes in building race worthy LS series motors. Seems like an alright guy, been doing for 30 years. Quoted me 1700 to 2500 for a stock motor rebuild. Not bad. dropped it off today Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - WRXtranceformed - 04-26-2016 So no crate motor now? Okay! Hopefully he does right by you, let us know how it turns out Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - Tyler.M - 04-27-2016 Im keeping that option in my back pocket. Still want to do so, but I want to see if theres any life left in the motor. Rebuilding at 92 k might be a horrible idea, but I'm gonna get an estimate and see what my options are from a shop that knows what they're doing. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - davej - 04-28-2016 I guess worst case you can always sell off the rebuilt engine for most of, if not a little more than what you have in the rebuild cost? Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - Tyler.M - 04-28-2016 Hopefully. I might get this rebuilt, try to sell it for a profit and then turn around and buy the crate. We'll see what the shop says first. Why are you going to spend money to have it rebuilt and then waste time trying to sell it, waste time waiting for the crate motor, etc.Tyler.M Wrote:Hopefully. Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - Tyler.M - 08-04-2016 So, it's been three months. Dropped the motor off around the beginning of May and he's just starting to work on it, but to be fair, he told me it would be a while. Really the only game in town in terms of rebuilding ls motors in the area. Seems to know what he's doing and he comes pretty well recommended from some people I know in the area that has worked with him. This amount of time working with him is pretty standard apparently, so not too surprised. Brakes and brake lines have been here for awhile, along with tires. Going with an LS7 clutch and flywheel upgrade since the tranny is out of the car. Also getting some work done on the driveshaft. No ETA on when this will all get back together, and the Xterra (thx Mom + Dad) I'm driving is ratted out, needs tires and a timing chain service done, among other things. BTW, did you know exhaust leaks suck on a tired motor at 4500ft? You were right to run away from the Xterra, Stephen. So, going through some threads (looking at you, Justin) and seeing folks going through some similar issues, looks like I'm probably going to start shopping for a decent (and RELIABLE) AWD. The recent 4runner thread has inspired me a bit and the reliability sounds like heaven on earth compared to my poop of a situation (that I always seem to keep returning to, wonder why that is?). Toyota/honda CUV's seem interesting, but I want something decent in the snow and I don't think those will fit the bill. I'm more concerned with getting something that will last as the constant woman in my life, instead of swapping cars about every two years and dealing with the emotional highs and low's that seem to come from that. Current contenders are a newish 4runner, newish Foresters with a n/a motor or splurging a bit and going for an FJ. Just as long as I can get a kayak or ski box on it, comfortably and not worry about major issues. Surprisingly few options in terms of wanting something that's both offroad capable and with decent reliability ratings. Re: The GoatBoat: 2006 Pontiac GTO - Senor_Taylor - 08-04-2016 Toyota! Toyota!
