Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 01-12-2016 A FWD truck?
Re: Automotive News Discussion - .RJ - 01-12-2016 Fucking awesome vehicle. I cant tell if its more or less ugly than before tho. Re: Automotive News Discussion - CaptainHenreh - 01-12-2016 WRXtranceformed Wrote:A FWD truck?\ What's the problem? ![]() Reality check: For 99% of truck owners who don't haul race cars, livestock, or building contractor supplies, a FWD truck is like, toooooooooootally fine. Most trucks never leave the asphalt. For a place that never sees snow I could see this working well for the handy home owner. Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 01-12-2016 Rex I'm about to revoke your Southerner card and slap three fingers of Blanton's in your hand to get you thinking straight. Probably more than most here I "get" the idea of a smaller truck since I'm likely going to buy one. For most truck shoppers though, aside from the FWD or torque vectoring AWD (which I like the upgraded version on our RDX but it does not mean it is good offroad even a little) there is a lot not to like about the Ridgeline. That is including the chassis and proposed bed length options (which apparently there are none). They will sell plenty of them though because they have a Honda badge. Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 01-12-2016 JPolen01 Wrote:I came here to say this. Most trucks never leave the asphalt. That's fine and they'll sell plenty to those buyers but my feelings are that this won't appeal to most truck buyers. Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 01-12-2016 CaptainHenreh Wrote:What's the problem? Unrelated story, I once loaded up an '80 VW Caddy with nothing but used brake rotors until they were level with the sides of the bed and drove it to the recycling yard. You haven't experienced slow until you've driven a sub-100hp minitruck with at least 1000lbs of steel in the back of it. Braking distance was somewhat profoundly affected as well. Re: Automotive News Discussion - D_Eclipse9916 - 01-12-2016 It's a honda. Hated the previous ridgeline for utility (high bedlines, small bed in general). FWD I dont mind, probably actually MORE useful than RWD in a truck since a pickup truck has 0 weight in the back. At least with FWD you have all the weight up front helping you. Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 01-12-2016 Yeah I don't think I could buy a truck without some kind of 4WD / AWD system, even living in an area that rarely get snow Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-12-2016 .RJ Wrote:Fucking awesome vehicle. I cant tell if its more or less ugly than before tho.Definitely less ugly since they got rid of those nasty buttresses. Wish I could've gone to the launch but had to cancel on account of the flu. Anyway, this seems like an refinement of the Ridgeline concept, which isn't a bad thing. My only questions would be whether they improved the gas mileage and did they keep prices in check. For the average person looking for a mid-sized crew cab pickup, the Ridgeline is a pretty good bet. The only thing I wonder is if the heavily-discounted full-sized trucks will eat significantly into sales. A crew cab 4x4 F150 might be around $40k but with all the discounts the out the door price might be a lot closer to something like a Ridgeline. And now the ride quality in the F150 is waaayyy better than it used to be so the Ridgeline loses some of its advantage there. Re: Automotive News Discussion - D_Eclipse9916 - 01-12-2016 WRXtranceformed Wrote:That's fine and they'll sell plenty to those buyers but my feelings are that this won't appeal to most truck buyers. Well the truck market is mostly dominated by a couple large groups -Light duty trucks (think all those white 1500 single cab v6s with barely a radio) for businesses, the cheaper the better, they get beat up 3-5 years, take the tax break and buy a new one -Heavier duty trucks that need to haul wether "lighter weight but bigger bed" or actually towing and need V8 or diesel -Local person that likes "trucks" and wouldnt consider a honda a truck. (includes older men who just want a V8 and luxury, or bro dozer). This has turned into a larger market than a lot of people thought and why there is the UBER PLATINUM EDITION F350 with chrome and leather everything. The honda hits none of these large markets. F150/Sierra/Ram do all 3 well in different guises. This hits the "I hate domestics" crowd that needs to every now and then throw stuff in a pickup instead of their SUV/Minivan and is willing to pay the premium for a Honda. It's a VERY small market compared to normal pickups. Edit: This last one is just for RJ and G. Jon is just a fanboi so we dont count him
Re: Automotive News Discussion - V1GiLaNtE - 01-12-2016 Interesting truck. I don't mind the styling, but am intrigued as to what sort of traction control Honda has designed to assist the FWD as well as the AWD to boost any "off-road" ability. Reminds me a lot of the L200's we saw all over Thailand. ![]() Might be popular in other parts of the world, but mostly in SE Asia you don't see a lot of Honda's for some reason. Trucks which reigned supreme down there were the new Ranger, L200's, Isuzu Pickups, and of course the Hilux. They were all exclusively diesel as well... something we'll never see here in the US. Edit: Hmmm according to Car and Driver: Quote:The now-optional all-wheel-drive system will include a torque-vectoring function as well as a multi-mode terrain-management system. Still curious to see what they will include in that system. Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 01-12-2016 I liked the old Ridgeline for what it was, and I like this one too, for what it is. It's 100% useless for me, but as others said, it's fine for the typical NoVA dad who wants more utility than a Pilot can provide, but doesn't need the size of an F-150. For what it's worth, current incentives on a 2016 F150 XLT (and this is cheapest-of-cheap beyond the XL with crank windows) have you out the door at $32k. Something tells me you can get an AWD RidgelineV2 with some amenities for that price or less. About the only thing the Ford has going for it at $32k is Bluetooth and a (4" screen) backup camera. Re: Automotive News Discussion - D_Eclipse9916 - 01-12-2016 Or... Actual Pricing is more around $20k even without a commercial account. http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detai ... /overview/ The honda isnt trying to grab basement commercial vehicles, its not getting the bro dozer, its not getting the baller truck people, its not getting the heavy duty people....so what's left? The people who want utility and are willing to do a pickup instead of "insert SUV". That sure is a small population. FYI- Honda Ridegelines START in the mid-30s...and easily going into the 40s. Re: Automotive News Discussion - JustinG - 01-12-2016 The Colorado/Canyon looks that much better to me now... Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 01-12-2016 The $20k truck is a no-options RWD XL, my $32k example is an XLT that is more in line with what the "average Joe" would likely consider to be in line with their minimum requirements. Assuming it's priced like a Pilot... the base Pilot is $30k. Damn. When did they get expensive? My takeaway from all of this is that I have no handle on new car prices. Re: Automotive News Discussion - D_Eclipse9916 - 01-12-2016 Jake Wrote:I have no handle on new car prices. +1 Jess and I make good money and I still can't fathom buying a $60k diesel, heck we are even gun shy of being a 25-30k vehicle for Jess! It's a much smaller segment than the full-sized segment but they sold about 50k Ridgelines in the first year of sales the last time around and that was right around what they were looking for. This is not something that is attempting to sell 800k units like the F150 or even 100k+ units like the Tundra. Looking at the sales of the other mid-sized pickups, in 2015: Tacoma: 180k Colorado: 84k Frontier: 63k Canyon: 30k If the Ridgeline can get to the 40-50k mark with only one cab configuration, I'd say they've done fairly well. Quote:FYI- Honda Ridegelines START in the mid-30s...and easily going into the 40s.Nah, the old Ridgeline used to start in the low 30's, topping out at about $38k. This one will probably be similar, but with a sub $30k FWD model at the bottom. The top trim will only get pricier if they throw some fancy new options at it. Spec out any of the mid-sized trucks with a crew cab and 4WD and you're going to be starting at about $30k or more with all of them except the Frontier. |
