Re: Project XJ - Mike - 12-29-2009

i think that's a steering damper?

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 12-29-2009

Yes, it is a steering stabilizer. If it didn't have it it would wobble violently from side to side when you hit bumps. "Bump Steer"

I guess thats what happens when you raid the spare parts bin from the tank shop to build a SUV

Re: Project XJ - V1GiLaNtE - 01-08-2010

Looks good! Glad to see the AT's are getting put to good use.

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 01-12-2010

AWWW SHIIIIIT New stuff and pics!

Getting aligned. The alignment almost perfect. We had to adjust the toe a bit and get the steering wheel centered and that is pretty much it.

Had a sticker laying around that a friend that races "Nascar" gave me...tossed that on. He is a pit chief for a car sponsored by Hooters that runs in some league that I would describe as like...Nascar farm league.

Most exciting of all, I got some new wheels for the whip! Guy was selling these on NOVA Jeepers for $50. I couldn't believe the condition when I got there...I was expecting them to be really crappy for $50. They are a 15X8in wheel from a 04 TJ Sahara. 1in wider then my stock wheel.

This one needed repair. I didn't think he was going to be able to do anything with it so I didn't take a "before" picture. This spot had a really bad rock rash on it...GONE. Phil is a magician.

Re: Project XJ - ScottyB - 01-12-2010

looks outstanding...love those snowflakes with meaty T/A's on them. and $50 for those...you are a vulture with an eagle eye

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 01-12-2010

Yeah I hate that I have to give the snowflakes up really...I'm going to keep them around for a bit to make sure I want to keep these.

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 01-12-2010

MM Brothers and sisters. Need opinion. I want some sort of rocker panel protection. Guy on nova is selling a set of 4WD hardware side steps for $60. They look like this...
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?jeep-sid=431&plID=134&partID=7026">http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?jeep-sid=431&plID=134&partID=7026</a><!-- m -->

Look at the poll and vote please.

Re: Project XJ - xvxax - 01-12-2010

Based on the hardware that held the step bars onto my last Ranger, I would look into the hardware that connects the step bars to your unibody to make sure they won't get blasted off on a rock. Mine were connected by some cheap 1/4" plate welded directly to the bar with no bracing. The bars were also too thin to support the truck.

I also don't think step bard should/could be substituted for rocker protection, but that's just based on the ones that I had on my Ranger. Isn't the point of rocker guards is to keep dents away, but to also allow the body of the truck to slide across rocks?

By the way, I love mildly lifted XJs, looks great.

These are aftermarket steps marketed as "rock rails" They are not however "rock sliders." Rock rails are supposed to be heavy enough to take a hit from a rock if you come down on one unexpectedly. But they will be damaged if hit to hard. They are also designed to be a step. Now a "rock slider" is a 2x2 box tube that rides below the rocker panel and is designed as an aid for rock crawling as well as protection. You can actually use them to slide around on tall rocks that are above your break-over angle. They are much stronger built and do not stick out like steps. You can jack from them and they are designed to support the full weight of the vehicle regularly. They are not really the sort of thing I need. You "use" your rock sliders if that makes sense?
