- WRXtranceformed - 05-10-2009 I can't wait for the Caps to lose so we don't have to hear about a sport nobody really cares about south of the US / Canada border anymore. - John - 05-10-2009 Apoc Wrote:LOL. Have you ever seen a Caps game live? I mean I hate Sidney Crobsy enough to wish for a world without him but Ovie sits by the offensive blue line waiting for pucks. You don't see that on TV because the camera isn't on him but he doesn't really play that much defense. I never said Ovie didn't cherry pick, but at least Ovie has some incredible stick control and moves. 80% of Crosby's goals are from him cherry picking. - Mike - 05-11-2009 John Wrote:Apoc Wrote:LOL. John LeClair's nickname was the "garbage man". The thing that always irked me about that is if you know the guy is camping out to get rebounds or cherry pick, get one of your defenseman to clean him out and annihilate him. That'll make him hesitant to camp out anymore. - Apoc - 05-11-2009 WRXtranceformed Wrote:I can't wait for the Caps to lose so we don't have to hear about a sport nobody really cares about south of the US / Canada border anymore. Pretty much anywhere where it's cold in the winter, please still love hockey. DC has never been a hockey town and you moved even farther away from the snow so you're biased. Detroit, Buffalo, Philly, Pittsburgh, Boston... all crazy about hockey. Varlomov saved them for several games with superhuman effort but now that he's come back down to Earth, the Pens are outscoring them. The offense is doing their job and Varlomov is still doing his job, it's the defense that will end up costing them. - CaptainHenreh - 05-11-2009 Apoc Wrote:Welcome to the reason why the Caps are losing... their defense is plain mediocre. I think, sadly, that part of this problem is Green. Green is a very talented hockey player, but I think that his goal scoring in the regular season might have altered the defensive dynamic a bit, and now they're struggling to return to convention. I could be totally wrong, but I can't think of any other reason for Green to be standing around on the ice watching the puck slide past him. Also, wtf is it with us losing scrums? Here's a hint guys: You don't get points for hits. It's really cool when you smack somebody, and everybody likes it, but the point is to *get the puck while the guy is moaning in pain against the glass*. If you hit him, and he skates away with the puck, you're doin' it wrong. - Kaan - 05-11-2009 How about the fact that the Caps arent controling the puck? i've never seen them chase the puck like they are... their passes are far from on point. - Apoc - 05-11-2009 Green is the new Gonchar. He scores goals but just plain sucks at playing defense. - Evan - 05-11-2009 There have been lots of times where the teams are full strength but it looks like the Pens are on the power play. Even if the Caps get the puck they cant even get it out to center ice before having to dump it. Thats pretty embarrassing for a team that prides itself on offense. I think we are seeing the difference between the elegant european style pass-around hockey that works in the regular season, and the harder style camp in front of the net and play whack-a-mole that works in the playoffs. Anyone else finding the officiating suspect? At least in games 3 and 4 I thought it was incredibly biased. A call where varly was tackled in the crease, then somehow the caps got penalized sticks out in my mind. Game 5 seemed to be pretty even officiated. (which just fuels the theory of the NHL wanting the series to go to 6/7 games to maximize ovie vs crosby hype) - CaptainHenreh - 05-11-2009 Evan Wrote:There have been lots of times where the teams are full strength but it looks like the Pens are on the power play. I think the Officiating has been a little fishy. I mean, 6 penalties in a row for the caps is a little silly, even for a team as physical as they are. The Ovechkin/Gonchar knee collision was totally ridiculous, and the fact the Pens wanted something more than 2 minutes for it was even MORE ridiculous. If you can't take a hit from the Great 8 then stay out of his way? I gotta say, I miss Brashear. I think if some of those penalties came along with some legitimate enforcement I wouldn't be so upset. - kcook - 05-11-2009 LOL This is when Ove "intentionally" hit Gonshar http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo23 ... flbot5.jpg And I agree with evan and the NHL theory wanting this series to go to 6-7 games. Games 3 and 4 was a joke for penalties. - damnit458 - 05-11-2009 WRXtranceformed Wrote:I can't wait for the Caps to lose so we don't have to hear about a sport nobody really cares about south of the US / Canada border anymore. For somebody who seems to detest hockey as much as you do you sure do seem to post a lot in this thread  Anyway, the post above pretty much sums it up. The caps defense is being exposed for what it is, mediocre. I'm not all that surprised at Green's postseason thus far. The guy was never more than decent in his own end all year long, so expecting him to be more than that in the postseason is just unrealistic. That said, he's still young, and I think his game in his own zone will come around in the next few years. Dmen tend to mature slower than other skaters anyway. Personally I think the Caps are going to pull out the game tonight and force this series to go seven. If they don't though there's really not much you can say. Yes the officiating has been questionable, but the Caps have been (as a team) outplayed by the Pens in almost every game this series. I have a feeling that they won't go w/o a fight. - Mike - 05-11-2009 sweet. had to listen to it on e-radio... the announcers make it pretty damned exciting. - John - 05-11-2009 Caps were lucky not to be sent home with their tails between their legs. Defense was god awful and they should be embarassed. But a win is a win, no matter how it happens, but being out-shot 2 to 1 is no way to win the playoffs. - Evan - 05-11-2009 Evan Wrote:Anyone else finding the officiating suspect? The officiating was still pathetic and biased against the caps. I didnt mind that the caps got called with some really nitpicky stuff in the 1st and 2nd periods (even though playoff hockey should be and usually is played with some liberal allowances) but then its got to be called both ways. the capital who got blatantly taken down from behind right in front of the ref at the end of the 2nd, then the bad intereference call on a cap right at the end of the 3rd are particular examples that stick out. Bad enough calls that Budreau even commented on them in the press conference. anyway, hockey is a macho sport so you arent supposed to whine about the officiating. Chris do you have those game 7 tickets available? - damnit458 - 05-11-2009 Evan Wrote:well, there goes that theory. The officiating was still pathetic and biased against the caps. Honestly I didn't think it was that bad. There were a couple calls that were against the Pens that could have gone either way. Hell, the PP goal that Semin scored was on about as blatant a dive as you can have. That said, that call on Laich at the end of the 3rd period was absolutely ridiculous. Game 7!!!!! - Hunter - 05-12-2009 I had a heart attack last night and died. It was nice knowing you guys. I actually watch the games up here surrounded by Pens fans. Two of my good friends are from Pittsburgh and my friend Cait's older brother plays for the Pens (Rob Scuderi). Needless to say, the trash talking and celebrations get quite loud at the bar where we usually watch the games. Last night there was some kind of fundraiser and the bar we usually watch the games. So the owner offered us each a free beer for every goal that was scored in which we didn't scream, this was when the game was tied 1-1. Long story short... I got 6 free beers, which is likely what contributed to me not staying quiet and getting the 7th from the overtime goal. - damnit458 - 05-12-2009 Coincidentally the Caps minor league affiliate (Hershey Bears) are playing the Pens affiliate (WBS Penguins) in the second round of the AHL playoffs and game seven of their series is tonight. Apparently every game in the series that the Bears have won the Caps have won, which is kinda interesting. It's streamed online for anybody that might want to watch. I was surprised last night to see a crowd of about 10-20 people watching the Caps game at the bar last night. It's cool to see the Canes fans starting to come out now that they're doing well again. I'll be rooting for them to finish off the Bruins tonight, and for the Wings to finish their series as well so that we can HOPEFULLY see Hawks vs Wings and Caps vs Canes in the next round - Apoc - 05-12-2009 For those that asked, we're not using our two tickets for tomorrow night's game but they're already spoken for. - damnit458 - 05-13-2009 Bears won 3-0, lets keep the trend going =) |
