Yes it would... bike events are just a whole different world than with cars in terms of safety and organization (in general). Some better than others, of course.

I think that's the underlying issue/problem/difference.

Complacent with a mirror? lol

just out of curiosity, since this thread has been started...

how many people have gone to the track?

how many people still wish they had mirrors at the track?

I don't know if you saw this thread or not, but it is my belief that having mirrors would give me a chance to avoid a situation like this:

Thinking of going back to cars next year.....

*edit* reading over this old thread is fun

I didn't see a description of the accident to even guess if mirrors would have helped.

I don't know more detail, but I don't think more detail helps. I just know he got punted and I don't think he did anything insidious to deserve or cause it. It's an inevitable "accident" the way these events are run (I can only speak firsthand for NESBA and TPM), and without mirrors, the potential punt-ee doesn't have much defense.

Re: just dreaming... educate me on what I should get please! - stevegula - 08-31-2009

I'm not entirely sure what a punt-ee could figure out in .5 seconds what's going on behind him and make an intelligent decision based on it to begin with.

haha... it's ok man. You either just haven't ever gotten anything out of a rear view mirror or you're trying to be difficult. Either way, I'm probably not going to change your mind. I just would rather have the extra information. Likely the guy was following very closely on previous corners, and he was a newbie too. If I saw that I would say, hey, I think I'm just going to pit in or wave this guy by before he collects me. I just assume I'd use them like I do with a car on track, and I've found them to be very useful in similar situations.

Oh, as another example, I sure wish I'd had them a couple times when people decided to pass me on the outside just before corner entry before they figure out what the hell the line is. Scares the piss outta me. I'm still on the brakes, moving left for example, just about to get near the left edge and bend it in right, when some dbag passes me on the gators, probably also scared since he almost got squeezed off the track. I've now learned to leave room on both sides the first few sessions out just to help avoid this situation. Sure, hitting me would be his fault, but that doesn't really make my bones or bike heal any faster!

FWIW, looking back to some of your previous responses, I rarely hear a bike coming up behind me on track. And my bike is VERY quiet. So, I guess my hearing sucks. :dunno: Mirrors plz!

What prompted you to bring this thread back from the dead anywho?

I'm reminded of it every time I watch someone get torpedoed. I suspect most people say, "Yea, mirrors really aren't going to help much," after they get out on the track.

I'm not really sure what to say about having never heard a motorcycle come up on you, other than i fear that if your hearing this bad now, how bad is it going to be in 40 years.

*edit* btw, no, I've never really gotten anything out of my mirrors other than a good shot of my elbows on my crotch rockets. Buell is a bit different, but those mirrors are like antennae and I sit considerably more upright.

mirrors at the track are just as useful as your speedo at the track IMHO
