Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 02-03-2014

They're copying Audi (A7) who copied Mercedes (CLS, CLA). A "coupe" apparently no longer refers to the # of doors a car has, it's whether or not the roofline is sufficiently svelte. The 4 series GC is on the same wheelbase as the 2 door 4 and has a slightly different body on it than the 3-series sedan.

I was fully prepared to hate this 4-series GC thing when I saw the headline, but I actually really like the car, especially this bit:

My Saab had a lift back like that and it kicked ass. Gives you some of the functionality of a hatch (depending on how deep the trunk is) but with sleeker styling. I also like the 6-series GC, it gives you the luxo features of the 7, in the size of the 5, with a better looking body.

The jagged pill I still can't swallow is what the legitimate functional differences are between the 3-series touring, 3-series GT, X1 and this new thing. They all seem like more or less the same car to me with minor adjustments to cargo room and ride height. Is there really a customer for every slightly different flavor of these things? :dunno:

Re: Automotive News Discussion - JustinG - 02-03-2014

IT'S FUCKING STUPID

Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 02-03-2014

The really bullshit part is they've gotten everything in position to give us a 1-series sedan, which would be an actual sports sedan that isn't the size of a city block, reasonably priced, and would compete for the attention of A3 and CLA shoppers. The market is there (according to the VAG and Merc), I already see leased CLAs infesting northern VA, but where's BMW's offering? Nowhere.

I would buy the shit out of a ~$33k 128i M-sport 6 speed. I like the 228i but they seem to have taken a page from Audi and started charging a "coupe tax" where they tack another 20% onto the MSRP to give you two less doors in the same car. Add like 2 options to the 228i and it's a $40k car.

It's fucking stupid.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 02-03-2014

The 4 series Gran Coupe confirms that BMW product planning is tripping on acid. "Even numbers are 2-doors. Except when they have swoopy trunk. Or whenever we feel like it. You should buy a odd number BMW if you want 4-doors, or an even number if your want 4 doors with a slightly different front faschia." :?:

Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 02-03-2014

A 1-series sedan would be great. Until they added a 2-series Gran Coupe to the mix. With a car so small, the roofline is already swoopy.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - *insertusernamehere* - 02-03-2014

A 1-series hatchback would be AWESOME. They can just take my money then.

You mean like they sell EVERYWHERE ELSE?

Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 02-03-2014

1 series hatchback is one of the most awkward looking cars ever.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 02-03-2014

Yeah the current 1 series hatch looks terrible. The first gen was pretty sweet. Makes me mad every time I travel.

I have no idea what the fuck is going on with BMW or why everything costs $45k.

Every time someone mentions something about the m3/4, 2 series, 3 series, whatever, I just nod my head and say yes.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - Goodspeed - 02-04-2014

I need to find a M245i-x-ziDriveE to update this, but

Re: Automotive News Discussion - Beej - 02-04-2014

I mean I'm not saying any of this shit makes sense, but on www.bmwusa.com, it's listed as a 3-series Gran Turismo. So...2 door whale = Gran Coupe, 4 door whale = Gran Turismo?

Just maxed one out and hit $65k. :?

Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 02-04-2014

No no no. See the 3-series Gran Turismo is for the classically minded 3-series buyer who wants a sporty, refined 4-door sedan but needs the extra practicality of a lift back.

The 4-series Gran Coupe is a completely different vehicle, for the modern and stylish coupe buyer who's sophisticated sexiness isn't properly highlighted unless he owns a car with Coupe in the name, but needs the added convenience of 4 doors... and a lift back.

:vomit:

Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 02-04-2014

What the fuck

Re: Automotive News Discussion - Beej - 02-04-2014

JFC.

3 Series Gran Turismo

4 Series Gran Coupe
[Image: 600]

Both are M Sports. So...difference being...the Hofmeister kink thing? Slightly different curvature in the door?

Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 02-04-2014

Why can't you all see the difference, it's so obvious, oh my god, clearly you're not car enthusiasts I mean jeez.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - Steve85 - 02-04-2014

Sonal responded to Mary, "Oh, you have the 3 series...we went with the 4 series. We were afraid Sofia and Jonas would be bumping elbows while playing their iPads on the way to cotillion. But the 3 series is nice too"

Mary, "Well you know, we got the 3 Gran Turismo since our two boys are growing so tall, we needed the extra headroom. The 4's roofline was too low and X5 was absolutely out of the question."
