I think mine did that because we immediately turned leaving the neighborhood, so it unloaded a wheel. In a straight line, it's "okay," but as Stephen said, the turns are pretty disappointing.

Yeah but it's a Malibu.

So my guys ordered both thermostats listed for the car on WorldPac. Neither of them fit. Went to the dealer, turns out thermostats and water pumps are VIN# specific for some fuckin' retarded reason. (I thought VW was doing the whole modular platform/drivetrain thing :?: ) Went back to the shop, jiggled the existing thermostat around, put it back in and replaced the ECT. It's been acting normal so it seems like we got lucky and it was the ECT causing the issue, but if it acts up again they'll get the right thermostat and stick it in for me.

Next up on the docket is an oil change/tire rotation/seafoam/brake bleed sort of tune up. I'm currently at 70k and it's due at 72k but I might knock it out early if I have time.

The VW will light up whichever side is unloaded too, completely different sensation than stomping on the throttle in the M3 with the wheel turned.

Speaking of which, my buddy who can get me the cheap tune is quitting his job and leaving the shop at the end of the month. I wanted to wait until fall if I was going to do it, but now I need to decide whether or not I want to spend the money in the next week or two before the window of opportunity closes.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - SlimKlim - 07-08-2014

Yeah I'ma tune it.

The ECT repair seems to have done the trick for the temperature issue and the bill came out to a little less than I expected at $202. I kept going back and forth about the tune but the idea of 260-290ft-lbs for $350 is too intoxicating to pass up. It sounds like the earliest I can get it in is next Wednesday, but stay tuned for 1st impressions.

I expect obnoxious amounts of wheel spin in 1st, 2nd, and possibly 3rd, but with judicious throttle usage it should be a little rocketship, even on the crappy all seasons.

It's going to be a crap-ton of wheel spin, I would start setting aside money for some beefier tires now lol. I'm on 245 Hankooks and it's still annoying.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - SlimKlim - 07-08-2014

You're also Stage 2 no? So you're pushing even more power through the poor things.

And nah, it's going to have to stay the way it is. I'm still struggling to justify the cost of the tune to myself. I'll just have to let the DSC do it's thing or learn how much throttle certain gears can handle.

*If* I was going to start sliding down the slippery slope of really modding this GTI I would 1.) Have to sell the M3 to justify it to myself and 2.) I would most likely want to start with a more nicely optioned car like an MK6 Autobahn, then do the Stage 2 stuff, upgraded DV, light wheels and good tires, upgraded sways, etc.

The rule I set for myself when I got the GTI was it had to stay stock if I was keeping the BMW, because pouring money into modding/fixing up two cars is not sustainable for me. I think overall I've been very good, haven't thrown a tablet in it, haven't wasted money on the hatch popper kit or euro interior crap. This stupid tune is the first time my resolve has crumbled, I just can't pass up getting it for nearly half off.

Stage 2 adds a whopping ~4HP and ~5HP. Exhaust is all about the fun noises lol; the real gain comes from the intake and Stage 1.

Good points, if I remember when my brother left the stock tires it wasn't that awful, just got to modulate the throttle juuuussstt right. Nailing it off the line is pretty much not the way haha.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - SlimKlim - 07-08-2014

Yeah, that's how it already is stock, WOT in 1st just shreds the front tires and feels much slower than short shifting into 2nd. I think the tune will make it nice to cruise around town in 3rd-4th-5th and have a wall of torque available when I want it. Most people say stage 1 just makes the car feel "like it should've" from the factory.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - ScottyB - 07-08-2014

can't wait to see your reaction to the tune. i drove an old B5 A4 with the same K04 turbo but on a 1.8T...and with some aggressive tuning and boost pressures, once it spooled it basically felt like getting rear ended by a schoolbus. with your bigger displacement and a generation of better engine management its probably going to be a really nice shove.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - SlimKlim - 07-08-2014

Do I have a K04? Or K03? I honestly don't even know, I just know it's an adorable teeny little thing tucked way under the exhaust manifold.

I still know a fraction about this car and turbo motors compared to what I know about the BMW. Last week at the shop I was poking around while he had it on the lift:

"What's that?"

"Secondary water pump."

"I have two, why?"

"Prolly to cool the turbo"

"It's water cooled? I thought it was oil cooled?"

"It is."

"....k"

But yeah I'm really looking forward to it. I just ordered an oil change kit and air filter, plus some Type 200 brake fluid cause my pedal is pretty squishy. I'll either knock out that stuff this weekend, or see if my shop will tolerate me getting under their feet while they tune it next week and take advantage of all their equipment. I'm also going to get some seafoam to steam clean the intake again.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - davej - 07-08-2014

It's a ko3, ko4 bolts right up though. Or trade it in on a golf r.

I'm so jealous you can see your secondary water pump. Some brilliant engineer decided to tuck it under the intake manifold on the 2.7t. Sad

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - davej - 07-08-2014

Also dont beat yourself up about getting a tune, it's hands down the cheapest power/dollar you ever do. Plus to help your inner bean counter, some claim better gas milage also. I might not have read far enough up, but which tune are you getting? A canned Apr/giac or is he doing a custom one?

I want an A4 avant with the 2.0T an a K04.

FUCK.

Ah right, that's what people bolt on when they go to Stage 3. A Golf R is still a realistic possibility in the somewhat distant future. I dunno if it will be in one year or three, but when I do replace this car it will almost certainly be for a CPO MK6 R or a new/CPO MK7 Perf pack.

I am curious to see if gas mileage improves. According to the computer I've been averaging 22.7mpg commuting 14 miles/day, 100% city driving. And he's doing the canned Revo Stage 1 tune, not a custom one.

Used B8s are getting into the mid-$20k range. Throw in another few grand for a turbo, tune and some supporting mods and you're in business.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - .RJ - 07-09-2014

Cant get a B8 avant with 3 pedals. Sad panda. Plenty of B7's out there though.... and I may or may not be looking at the APR kits and it would be about $5k for the K04 & Exhaust upgrade....

Or just sack up and buy the S4 B7 Avant and drive around with a boner all day and live in fear of replacing timing chain guides.

Sounds like Option #2 would get uncomfortable after a few hours.

Honestly if you were going to do something like that, an older B7 is probably a better place to start. I'm sure a full on K04 swap would void your warranty for most parts that are going to break, so paying for a B8 under warranty would be a bit of a waste. The only thing that really skeeves me out about those are the insane suspension setups with millions of little bushings, but if you were able to find one that had been recently refreshed you could forget about it for a few years.

The power you can get out of the K04 swap is nuts. GIAC claims 300-330hp/300-350ft-lbs for their tune with the S3 KO4 and S3 injectors. That would turn an Avant into like a Golf R-XL.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - .RJ - 07-09-2014

I'm ok with the balljoint bonanza in the front end and minor electrical faults. I am not ok with replacing timing chain tensioner guides - book rate for the job is 40 hours, and then you end up with a bunch other "while the motor is out" jobs to do and you're getting a ride for $5-8k.

Supposedly, the later cars got updated parts, and most of the earlier cars that had the problem have been fixed by now.... but I dont know if there are any other expensive faults lurking in there. An under-stressed, naturally aspirated V8 should not have any problems, ever.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - SlimKlim - 07-09-2014

I'm not too familiar with the timing chain issues. I know there are some variations between the VW FSI/TSI and the Audi TFSI. In '08.5 The VW moved from a timing belt to chain and some of the early motors had issues with the tensioners failing, but it seems pretty rare. I've actually seen a few TSI motors up to super high mileage, like 160k+. The older FSI had issues with the cam follower and HPFP, but the newer ones don't seem to have any major hiccups, just the minor electrical fuckery that I've had to deal with.
