The Atom would be the frontrunner but they're a lot more expensive than a Zenos, even when used. So my shortlist right now is Zenos E10S -> Atom 3 -> Radical

Only thing with the Radical is it's not street legal in any way shape or form. But it's way fucking faster than anything else.

My latest unrealistic daydream is taking a "cheap" kit car like an Exocet and doing a different drivetrain (I like the idea of an AP1 S2k motor with a Comptech blower) and sort of designing my own interior and body.

Seems simple, all I'd need is a fully stocked machine shop, 3D printer, a few years worth of fiberglass laying experience, professional bodywork experience, a mechanical engineering degree, and another $20-30k cash.

Could always pick up the half-finished project of someone else who tried and failed.

The new crawl control on the new Tacomas is pretty cool. Granted if you've ever wheeled before, you know it's not all that impressive since they're going downhill, and spinning the wheels the opposite way of the pile of dirt. Still a neat feature. I wonder how it will work in the real world?

G, have you looked at the DF Goblin? its not exceptionally fast but its very accessible and the componentry is very easy to squirrel together since its GM econocar stuff. from a performance engineering perspective its not as pure (rear mcstrut) as other choices like the atom/caterham/radical because its obviously trying to work within a realm of easy to source parts, but it seems to leverage the low weight/power to weight thing very well.

Hadn't actually seen that one. Seems a bit scary on with side driver exposure but seems like a solid concept. As you said, I don't know that I'd be cool with the mcstruts though. Part of the allure of these cars is the inboard suspension you can get on them. At $20k it's pretty cheap but I'd rather pay a bit more and get that Zenos or a used Atom (which apparently used Spec Race Atoms are under $40k now).

let 'em burn. its not like they were making bad window switches or something trivial.

from what i've read, their internal organization was garbage. entire groups of inventory not even in the system or written down haphazardly. i guess a lack of competition will do that to you.
