Re: Automotive News Discussion - .RJ - 10-13-2015 SlimKlim Wrote::dunno: Idk what you grumpy bastards are on about, that's the only new BMW in the past 5 years that's remotely done anything for me. Looks way better than the M3/M4, it's the right size, comes with a manual, what more do you want? A car that costs less than $60k that isnt stuffed full of electronics, hydraulics, nannies and turbos? I know the price was said to be $51k but you know you'll need to buy the "driving dynamics package" to get a fuckin' steering wheel. But, I am just a luddite standing in the way of "progress" Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 10-13-2015 I don't disagree with you, but that applies to everything else in the market too, unless you get a dedicated almost-track-car like a GT3/GT4, in which case they charge you more for a car with less in it. Re: Automotive News Discussion - .RJ - 10-13-2015 SlimKlim Wrote:I don't disagree with you, but that applies to everything else in the market too, unless you only buy 8 year old cars and spend your money on maintenance instead FTFY. Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 10-13-2015 Yeah or that. If you want a car for less than $60k without (a lot of) electronic nannies, E46 M3s are like 10/$1 right now. Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 10-13-2015 I for one, welcome our new M badged sports coupe. :dunno: My only real criticism is that it sounds like it'll still be too heavy. Looks like it'll only weigh about 100 lbs less than a M4, and the M4 is a significantly bigger and faster car. Granted, the M4 costs a lot more too. I probably wouldn't buy one of these because if I'm buying a car that needs rear seats, I'm gonna go with a 911 Turbo, GTR, or M4 and if I don't need that rear seat room I'm going with a Cayman, GT3, 4C, S-successor, etc. It's kind of in no man's land for me. A CSL version would tickle my fancy but then BMW would do something stupid like take out the rear seats, then I'd be back at the Cayman or something. Re: Automotive News Discussion - RawrImAMonster - 10-13-2015 Ok, it looks way better in this picture. However, it sounds like it's going to be a limited release kind of thing. Latest info I saw said the UK is only getting 500 of them. No info on the US numbers yet. Edit: Actually, I think this is just a non-official render. This front bumper looks way better though.
Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 10-13-2015 If it is another limited release then I officially change my mind and I hate it. I was completely in love with the 1M when it was coming out (despite not loving the looks), but the fact that they produced so little to keep it from cannibalizing M3 sales ruined it for me because they won't depreciate and I'll never have one because of it. Just sell the goddamn cars to everyone that want to buy one, now that the M3 is the size of an E39 M5 surely there is room in the market for both cars. I feel like today's average M3 buyer wouldn't cancel his order for a car he can't fit his kids in. Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 10-13-2015 I think a large reason the 1M was limited in production is because it came in the last model year of the 1 series. To be honest I was surprised BMW made that car at all. The current gen 2 series has a couple of years left before a full model change so I imagine M2's will be waaayyyy easier to come by. I do think some dealers will mark up M2's so they can fleece any suckas who can be duped into believing 'BMW is only going to make the M2 for a year like last time'. Re: Automotive News Discussion - RawrImAMonster - 10-14-2015 The 1M was in 2011, the e82 ended in 2013. Also, speaking of limited production, rumor is that the top ford dealer in the US is only getting 10 Focus RS's with a waiting list of 30+ on the first day they were available for order. The GT350 is limited production too. What's the point of making all these awesome cars if they won't sell any. They do it so they can mark the shit out of the price the first year and make a killing and know they will sell them all instead of having a shit ton of cars just sit. I can understand it to a certain point from their perspective annoying for the average folk who can afford the base price but not the tacked on premium? Yes for sure. Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 10-14-2015 I know the 1M was being produced into 2012, forgot that 1 series production went into 2013. Either way, BMW has said the point of the M2 is an entry way into the M brand, and you can't really do that if younger customers have no chance of buying the car at MSRP. I'm kind of surprised that the DCT M2 is actually lighter than the 6MT by about 85 lbs, but it still ends up at ~3400 lbs. With the M3/M4 losing 200 lbs I'm surprised they weren't able to cut a similar amount of weight out of the M2. Oh well, I'd still take one. Yes for sure.I dunno, I was chatting with a Porsche 911 GTS Club Coupe owner (btw, the lottery system they used was awesome), and he said Porsche wouldn't let dealers sell for a penny over MSRP even though they only made 60. They're not all evil. He did say he got some phone calls offering a blank check for it after he took delivery. As for the M2...I like it more than I expected to, but it's kinda meh. All of the 2-series I see in person are a bit awkward, particularly from the rear. I like the 1, and obviously the 1M, more. Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 10-14-2015 I like the idea of this M2 but am surprised at the weight difference. The front of the 2 looks better than the outgoing 1-series, but I can't get over the rear end of the 2's. They look way too similar to a Civic. I feel like you need to just shop for caterham and give up on everything else lol My thing is, something has to have a good reason for weighing what it does. To me, it doesn't make a lot of sense for the M2 to weigh only 100 lbs less than the M4, which is a much bigger car. That said, I really am working myself up to buying a sub-2000 lbs track-day special instead of a stupid and heavy sports car. I have a devil on one shoulder saying 'add lightness', a devil on the other shoulder saying 'but you want a superkaa' and a third devil on my head saying, 'If you want something ridiculous, a Ninja H2 with a kit puts out 280+ hp...'. Re: Automotive News Discussion - davej - 10-20-2015 Get your track car G, then you'd be freed up for an entry level membership into Club Prius Re: Automotive News Discussion - Goodspeed - 10-20-2015 G.Irish Wrote:That said, I really am working myself up to buying a sub-2000 lbs track-day special instead of a stupid and heavy sports car. Just buy an Ariel Atom, sub 2k lbs AND supercar performance, with the most excellent Honda powertrain I know you'd appreciate. |
