Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 12-17-2014 JustinG Wrote:Coin is dead, without chip and pin. Look at plastc, of ypu are still interested in this concept. Has chip and pin which will be required by end of 2015 for all CC.I despise the chip. Will they still require you to put it in the card reader the entire time? It's like a step backwards in quick pay solution and will kill any nfc payment concepts Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - .RJ - 12-17-2014 Do you not understand how chip cards work? It is a massive step forwards for fraud prevention. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 12-17-2014 I think the next best thing will be NFC with pin. At least, that's what I want. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 12-17-2014 Nope, not at all. My only experience with them is people in front of me not knowing how to use them at checkout or having to swipe it and then stick it into the reader and leave it there until it scans thr chip. Usually they don't know how to use it so they swipe it and it gets denied and then they have to start the transaction over again Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - .RJ - 12-17-2014 In AMURRICA, chip & pin use isnt widespread enough to overcome the stupidity threshold. The technology is really mature across the pond (at least 5 years old now), and eventually we'll get there. Anyways. With the chip, the waiter/cashier/etc never has to touch the card and it never leaves your sight. And you dont swipe the card at all, you hold it next to the reader and type the pin in the keypad. Once the US adopts chip & pin most card companies will take the stripe off of the cards completely and we can be rid of those stupid things. Outside of massive data breaches, most credit card fraud comes from pulling the card data off of magnetic stripes. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 12-18-2014 In 2015 pretty much all major retailers will convert to chip readers, and you will probably have a chip card issued by your bank or CC company. Most Visa/MC point of sale terminals must be updated by october or else fraud liability falls on the merchant not the issuer. I think atms and gas pumps are by 2017. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 12-18-2014 Get rid of cards altogether damnit! Amusingly, we had at least one waitress that had no idea how to swipe a card when we were in the UK last month. As in, she had to have someone show her how to do it. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 12-18-2014 So the waiter will have to bring the reader to the table I assume? So why do people have to put the card inside the reader now? Is that going to be the new norm or is that because we're still swiping. My bank is super small so they will probably issue chip cards as late as they possibly can. So why can't we skip this and just go to some type of secure nfc pin system? Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 12-18-2014 Depends on the reader as to wether or not you have to insert it. I think plastics are on their way out, but it will take a few years. Hell my parents just started using a debt card a couple years ago. I use google wallet whenever possible, but there is a learning curve. I was at panera, they just got their "Apple Pay" readers. I asked if it was hooked up, Told me it only works with the iphone 6, tapped with my S5, blew em away. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - .RJ - 12-18-2014 Sully Wrote:So the waiter will have to bring the reader to the table I assume? Yes Sully Wrote:So why do people have to put the card inside the reader now? They dont. Its the same technology as apple pay. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 12-18-2014 Maybe I'm seeing another technology? Or that's an option and people don't know they can just hold it above? Or like Justin said Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 12-18-2014 Not all chip cards have NFC, so you have to insert it into the reader. It is really no slower than mag stripe transactions. You just leave the card in the reader til the transaction is done. Where you swipe a mag stripe card and then still have to wait for the transaction to finish.

Apple Pay is NFC based.Sully Wrote:So why do people have to put the card inside the reader now? Contactless smart cards/chip&pin/EMV use passive RFID (like a building pass) but many smart cards/chip&pin/emv still use the contact chip on the front (underlying encryption and tech is still the same) IMO smart cards/chip&pin/emv is too little too late at this point. they dont do anything for online sales. we will be totally cardless pretty soon, but better late then never i guess. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 12-18-2014 Evan Wrote:IMO smart cards/chip&pin/emv is too little too late at this point. they dont do anything for online sales. we will be totally cardless pretty soon, but better late then never i guess. Agreed, but it does atleast knock down on some of the lower scale fraud activity like skimming. I am excited to see what is coming as far as ditching plastics, It just seems retarded that we carry around a physical card that has our account info on it aside from our address/phone number, which can easily be found if someone really wants to find it. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - .RJ - 12-18-2014 JustinG Wrote:Not all chip cards have NFC, so you have to insert it into the reader Those are being phased out, at least across the pond. When we finally get it here, they will be NFC based. I'm pretty sure they're not RFID because there's some communication that happens between the reader and the card. Either way, with nothing to scan off the card and the card never leaving your sight, I really hope this will cut down on fraud. I have to get a new card at least once a year, its a giant pain in the ass. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 12-18-2014 When do I get to stop inputting my credit card number in new websites? I'd give Facebook my credit card number if I could "pay with Facebook" like I "login with Facebook." TAKE MY PRIVACY FOR CONVENIENCE PLEASE!! TAKE MY PRIVACY FOR CONVENIENCE PLEASE!!ever since 1999. there is this website called paypal.... edit derek beat me to it, better read the whole thread first. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 12-18-2014 I would say I have to enter a credit card for 30% of my transactions because Paypal is not available as an option. Even higher if I count places where my credit card is already stored, like Amazon. :dunno: Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 12-18-2014 Just looked it up. Not including Amazon, my last six transactions did not have Paypal as an option. -oil company -travel company -airline -movie theater -concert tickets -federal duck e-stamp from VA fish/game The one before all these was Indiegogo via Paypal. So there. |
